This is my Tier list review of the entirety of the Russell T Davies Era of Doctor Who. The Era ran from 2005-2010. I break down every episode from 'Rose' up to 'The End of Time part 2'.
Thanks for watching please feel free to like and Subscribe!
The Davies era is also the first in which Doctor Who finally had a successful spin-off - and not one but two. Torchwood (the name is an anagram for “Doctor Who”) debuted in late 2006, after the extraterrestrial-handling agency was used in the revived Doctor Who‘s second series. The series, which might be loosely considered a more mature version of The X-Files, carried the Doctor Who universe into more explicit content than ever before. Just over two months later, The Sarah Jane Adventures debuted in a special, with a regular series following later in 2007. It took the franchise in the opposite direction, offering kid-friendly fare starring fans’ favorite companion from the Doctor’s history.
MORE ABOUT DOCTOR WHO:
Doctor Who is a British science fiction television programme produced by the BBC since November 23rd, 1963. The programme depicts the adventures of a Time Lord called "The Doctor", an extraterrestrial being, appearing to be human. The Doctor explores the universe in a time-travelling space ship called the TARDIS. Its exterior appears as a blue British metropolitan police box, which was a common sight in Britain in the 1960’s when the series first aired. Accompanied by a number of companions, the Doctor combats a variety of foes like the Daleks and Cybermen while working to save civilisations and save people in need.
Beginning with William Hartnell, over fifteen actors have headlined the series as the Doctor. The transition from one actor to another is written into the plot of the show with the concept of regeneration into a new incarnation and body, a plot device in which a Timelord "transforms" into a new body when the current one is too badly harmed to heal normally.
Ncuti Gatwa had previously been announced as Jodie Whittaker's successor after David Tennant reprises his role as the doctor in the 60th anniversary specials as the programme's lead, and many reports stated he would play the Fourteenth Doctor and that Whittaker's Thirteenth Doctor would regenerate into an incarnation portrayed by Gatwa. Upon Jodie Whittaker's final appearance as the character in The Power Of The Doctor, she instead regenerated into a form similar to the Tenth Doctor. This character, portrayed by Tennant, was confirmed to be the Fourteenth Doctor, with later clarification that Ncuti Gatwa would actually portray the Fifteenth Doctor. Ncuti Gatwa’s 15th doctor has also had his companion announced as Millie Gibson playing Ruby Sunday live on Children In Need.
On 24 September 2021, the BBC announced Russell T Davies would return to Doctor Who as showrunner, after having previously acted as showrunner from 2005-2010 for the Ninth and Tenth Doctors. He will succeed Chibnall for the show's 60th anniversary in 2023 and beyond. Davies will be joined by the Bad Wolf production company, which was founded by former Doctor Who executive producer Julie Gardner and former BBC head of drama Jane Tranter. In October 2021, it was announced that Sony would acquire a majority of Bad Wolf. Bad Wolf also took over creative control of Doctor Who beginning with the specials, allowing the BBC to focus on establishing Doctor Who as a global brand. The new era of Doctor Who is being labelled as RTD2 as it is Russel’s second era of Doctor Who.

i loveeeee the girl in the fireplace but my main issue is how it treats rose and mickey. they're essentially redundant in it, and i don't believe that the doctor would ever leave them, especially in the context of everything that happens in school reunion. i think this would have been a perfect episode for a solo doctor trip as one of the specials at the end of season 4 - giving the doctor hope of another companion then ripping it away would have been so so brutal, especially if it came just before waters of mars. or even as a replacement christmas episode post-martha's departure. it feels out if character for the doctor to abandon anyone but especially rose.

The girl in the fireplace has always given me weird vibes because of the romantic tension between the doctor and madame de pompadour after he saw her as a little girl, and I found it to be part of a larger theme of Moffat using the doctor to act out fantasies of his own. I also felt it somewhat cheapened his and Rose’s relationship. I really wish that romance hadn’t been included because I would’ve loved it otherwise.

The scene with the choir is so damn good, really hits you in the feels imo. And the general setting is really grim, not just the fact everyone is sealed in the highway but the fact everyone’s essentially a drug addict (the emotion drug/patch things) and how all of New New York just died, that shot with like the parliament full of skeletons, such a cool visual

Tbh, the initial buildup of LINDA in Love and Monsters is actually kinda sweet. It's this whole found family kind of thing, and then it suddenly comes crashing down when the stranger shows up. Obviously, a lot could have been better, but I do think it has an interesting premise.

Midnight was my first ever Doctor Who episode and it got me hooked immediately. I never really understood why Season 5+ never really clicked with me like Season 1-4 did. But you put it perfectly in this video. The dialog, the character interactions, the ability to just let things be fun without being complicated, the time to just breathe and allow the characters to just sit around and be friends. My favorite trope in any story will always be a good found family story and I think the RTD era does that so well.

You have to remember when Russell was the lead writer he would have edited all the scripts, steven moffat gets all the credit for those episodes and he might have come up with the great new villain but russells editing elevates them to perfect. I never understood how when Steven was the lead writer his villains didn't hit the same even when writing the ones he created

@jaystev oh cool, I heard from someone who worked in the script department but they could have been lying! In small doses he was a brilliant writer, the stories make sense, same with sherlock. But the later series were such a contrast and I didn't really like it at all. And the loss of character development/realistic families etc that russell does so well. I'm very interested to see what the new series is like and if I enjoy it again like I did s1-4. Even now I'm older I can still rewatch the older ones and enjoy them, and I liked the 60th specials. Fingers crossed for the new series!!

@@SKRIBBLEproductions Amy and Rory have more chemistry with Smith than a lot of Russel's combos like Rose and Tennant, Martha and Tennant. Also loss of development ? Capaldi literally has the biggest arc in new who. And Smith while not having as much, does get humbled a lot in series 6 compared to his extravegentness in S5 which got him in trouble. Tennant also just didn't have that much growth, Eccleston did. In fact, his development was so good it made 10 underwhelming by comparison tbh.

I agree. Midnight and Blink are perfect. Midnight freaks me out every time even though I know how it ends. Donna: Monto Bene! Doctor: No. Don't do that. Don't... don't... Don't. That performance from David is 10/10. The Doctor being scared is unnerving. Of all the things he has seen, he is usually so intrigued and interested. Like I wish the Doctor didn't give his clone to Rose (Like just avoided that story arch in general) and the ending for 14, instead of living with Donna, would be 15 giving his gift to 14, which is getting back to Rose to spend his days. I know, I know its been a while and a couple of regenerations since Rose but the Doctor seeing that ol familiar face HAD to bring back some memories and would've been a great finale for 14. The Real Doctor never ending up with Rose really bothered me when I first watched, even if he gave up his clone its just not the same so idk.

Christopher Eccleston is my favorite doctor of all time. My first Doctor was Jon Pertwee who was great but Eccleston brought me back to the series and he was fantastic :D I see the appeal of Tom Baker and especially Capaldi and Tennant + Smith have a special place in my heart. But Eccleston brought so much nuance to the character and I thought was perfect with only one series! Love this show, I hope they improve the show's writing moving forward though. We want good stories with loveable characters.

The whole sequence in Forrest of the Dead from when Donna enters the park to the scene in her kids room disturbed me so much as a kid that I didn't rewatch it until sometime last year and it still had my heart beating all throughout it. The way it all builds until she rips the veil off (I know the cgi isn't great but child me was very convinced) and reveals the messed up face and then the horror in her reaction when her children disappear. I watched films like Hereditary and Martyrs before I could bring myself to rewatch that episode.

Loved this vid but only really disagree with “Gridlock”- sure it’s a 40-something minute traffic jam but the reveal as to _why_ everyone was stuck on the road? The fact that they were all there for _years_ and had literally no hope of getting out, the reveal that there were actually no police or ambulances or support whatsoever, the virus stemming from the mutated mood drug? That shit gets me every damn time. Also the Lazarus experiment!! Is about the value of life!! And how it is in no way dependent or proportional to how long it is!!

the ending of RTD era was one gut punch after another. Episode to episode things seemed to turn out alright, but slowly more and more things just started to go wrong for the doctor and you realize it is a tragedy. In order to clear the way for a new doctor to have new adventures, everyone the doctor knew had to die or move on without him and he could not keep any of them in his life, and then, at the very end, when you think he has said goodbye to everyone and it's okay that 10 wasn't happy because none of the doctors really are, in the end they are just the vehicle for the next doctor, but right before everything turns out alright, right before 11 takes over and makes all of 10's suffering pointless, he says the one line that leaves it lingering, makes it impossible to forget that he has unfinished business and everything is not alright.

Brilliant video, your channel deserves to blow up off the back of it (and it must be, since the algorithm showed it to me out of nowhere today). I'm a bit older than you I think, so this wasn't a childhood thing for me, but I do have very fond memories of watching the Tennant era during high school. There was always something so genuine and heart-on-sleeve about RTD's Doctor Who. Sometimes it was a bit goofy, sometimes very goofy indeed, but that was always part of the charm. I did enjoy the early Moffat/Matt Smith years as well but as the story arcs got increasingly complex and self-satisfied, the charm diminished, so this will always be "my Who" and I find myself agreeing with so much of what you say in this video. Well done!

I’m only up to the Aliens in London part, and I had to pause to comment that I think Annette Badland (Margaret) is one of the greatest character actresses the UK has ever produced. I met her at a small indie press awards ceremony in 2015 (she was there to support a friend who was nominated). When I recognised her, her friend said “you must be an Eastenders fan!” I said I hadn’t watched Eastenders in years, and before I could say what show I knew her from, Annette interrupted me and said “can I guess? I bet you’re going to say Happy Families!” And she was right! I knew her from loads of shows and films, but Happy Families stuck in my head the most. It was a show on CBBC in the early 90s and was based on a series of books. She played various characters, but I always remembered her as Mrs Wobble the Waitress. She told me that no matter how many different roles she plays (and she’s played hundreds!), millennials will always either remember her from Happy Families or Doctor Who, even though she was only in a couple of episodes, and that she loves that she was a part of so many people’s childhoods. Edited to add I just saw Mickey’s grandma and that reminded me that Mona Hammond is one of my other all-time favourite British character actresses.

@@DannyTDWWhen I saw her in Doctor Who, I got excited because I recognised her from so many other shows. She was one of those actresses who you’d see pop up on pretty much everything but nobody seemed to know her name, we all just knew her face. I was lucky that everyone was wearing name tags at the event I met her at 😂. She was very sweet. We chatted for a while. It turned out we’re both from Birmingham so she asked where I lived and she told me about where she grew up and how much things had changed the last time she visited. She was so lovely and fascinating to talk to. I got a really nice photo with her too.

I've been saving them until after my classes end (Dec 17th) ❤ I remember 2005, being 8 years old and my dad excitedly sitting me down in front of the TV and telling me about how he used to watch Doctor Who as a kid 💙 we watched the original airing of the episode Rose together and I fell in love with it over the years 🌹 I haven't kept up with it in a while and my Dad wasn't as into it as I was after a little bit 💔 the 9th Doctor still holds a special place in my heart

Thank you for this video so much. This show is so unimaginably important to me and seeing this beautiful tier list really made me day. Only things I disagreed without I think were gridlock, and fotd/sitl. I think they are both very good. And also I would put turn left in perfect. There is honestly no flaws without, and if it weren't for blink it'd hands down be the best doctor lite episode, like u said the scene of wilf talking about the war is heart WRENCHING

This era of television was just amazing. I was just a little kid forcing my family to watch it with me, and it still today influences my music and art. It wasn't flawless, and there are some aspects that didn't really fit, but overall Murray Gold and Russel T Davies are two of the best people who have ever touched Sci-Fi. Also it really made me realise that all my childhood crushes were 100% justified, just saying.

My favorite episodes of the new show are (in order of favoritism): - Doomsday (Simply because of the ending. It's the most heart-wrenching companion sendoff in the history of the show. Nothing will top it.) - Human Nature / Family of Blood (probably the best episode of the show) - Midnight - The Waters of Mars - The End of Time ("I don't want to go") - Dalek - The Empty Child / The Doctor Dances (terrified me for months as a kid) - Stolen Earth / Journey's End - Silence in the Library / Forest of the Dead - Aliens of London / World War Three - The Impossible Planet / Satan Pit - The God Complex (great, creepy episode but the ending was poor) Nothing from Capaldi's era nor from Chibnal/Whittaker's era. Capaldi is a great actor, but I hated the scripts. Chibnal was an atrocious writer and the actors didn't help matters.
