I feel like, if Chibnall were to curate an art gallery, it would be full of the most beautiful and inspiring works of art from all of time accompanied by exquisite info plaques about their history and meanings...and then make it so the only way you could view them was via a high speed railroad that didn’t stop until it deposited you at 100mph into the gift shop where all you’d be able to see was the tiny postcards of all the paintings you WOULD HAVE seen, if only you’d have been able to actually explore the gallery.

I did indeed. In fact my fan brain immediately dreamt up a "middle of the actual story" comic story where we don't see the Doctor being persuaded by that TARDIS to kill it, because it was its destiny and rightful place in the timeline, or something. Seems like the Doctor would need to be talked into doing something like that.
@DarthAzabrush

No because the Doctor has casually killed entire worlds before. This idea that the Doctor has some sort of Batman code is the worst thing that nWho added and considering it created a literal universe sized plot hole in its first episode that is saying something.

Little detail (or I guess maybe headcanon?) I loved when the Recon Scout was exterminated... I genuinely don't think it was lying or being unrealistic about the whole "you can tweak my genetics, that way I get to live!" bargain. But the other Daleks, so bothered by its TINY traces of impurity, decided it was just *quicker* to shoot their martyr on the spot. You can HEAR the desperation in his pleading - it's impossible not to feel bad for the Recon Scout lol

27:29 I always saw this as the Jack challenging / provoking the Daleks here. He's just told the ultimate killers that he can't be killed, that could have been amazing. What I expected here was for all the Daleks to now be completely focused on killing Jack that they just ignore Ryan, Graham, and Robertson and gives them the chance to detonate and escape. Give Graham the manipulator and suddenly all the characters now have a reason to be on this ship and are actively part of the plan. Another missed opportunity, but honestly I was so caught up in the hype of the last half of the episode that I really didn't mind that part.

He actually felt like he served a purpose in Revolution's story and was genuinely funny here because they leaned into the ridiculous opportunist/profit obsessed persona, whereas in "Arachnids in the UK" in season 11, he felt incredibly forced and out of place; there was no good reason for him to be there, because there was nothing for him to do other than shoot the giant spider and the end, and there was a weird aspect where he was clearly a Donald Trump analogue but they didn't want to admit it. (In that episode he is confronted on being similar to Trump, and he explains that he is actually trying to build a presidential campaign because he despises Trump and wants to get rid of him) Robertson deciding to ally with the Daleks and sell out humanity is a fun idea and creates a few wrinkles for The Doctor as it compromises her plan. His company making the security drones is a bit of a clunky way of involving him in the story, but at least it gives him a clear specific reason to be there rather than his hotel just happening to be invaded by giant spiders.

@Shadowkey392 3 жыл бұрын
@@jokelao.o9960 the thing is, Chibnall does his best work when he has enough time to plan things out beforehand. Broadchurch is actually the perfect example of this; he planned out the first two series (the show was only supposed to have two series, initially) well in advance (like, a year or so in advance), and the result was that it was great. But when the BBC saw how popular the show was after series 2, they had Chibnall do a third series. Now, this probably wouldn't have been a problem if they'd given Chibnall the same sort of time to prepare and plan, but they didn't. They wanted Broadchurch series 3 to be done and ready to go for the very next year. The result was that Chibnall was not able to properly work things out, and series three was not as good. It's the same with his run on Doctor Who: the BBC hasn't been giving him enough preparatory time.
@samuelbarber6177
@samuelbarber6177 3 жыл бұрын
@@Shadowkey392 plus, I think he works best when he isn’t trying to cram all his ideas into fifty minutes. Probably why Broadchurch was better, it wasn’t a huge Sci-Fi Time/Space show like Doctor Who so it kind of limited him... He did a good two parter in Series 5 so maybe he should just do one-off Two-Parters, or just shows with season long stories. The overarching stuff, (I’ve never watched Broadchurch, but I assume it had an overarching narrative).

This may be my enjoyment of Broadchurch coming through but Whitaker does her best in dramatic scenes. I wish they played to her strengths more and quit trying to make her a third rate Matt Smith. The Doctor doesn't have to be a continual quip machine, there have been some great dramatic Doctors in the series. Thanks for another great review! I admire how, whether I agree with your opinion on an episode or not, you generally thoughtfully explain what did or did not work in it in a balanced way (sorry if that sounds rather pretentious or condescending). You raise some great points here (probably sounds even more patronising on my part). I agree with you on Chibnall's handling of the Daleks. And the fate of the line reconnaissance Dalek, exterminated for being "impure" despite all that it had accomplished... I was also rather taken aback about a new male companion in series 13, and would have liked it to be just the Dovtor and Yasmin for a bit, but as you say, Catherine Tate, Matt Lucas and Bradley Walsh more than defied expectations as Donna, Nardole and Graham respectively, so perhaps some faith is justified, and in any case time will tell. It always does. Sorry about another rather rambling comment. All the best!

A frustrating Chibnall story is very different from a frustrating Moffat story. Both of them have great moments sprinkled in, but when it comes to Moffat, he often completely misses the mark when it comes to doing the proper good stuff. Chibnall tries to do too much, and ends up not doing enough, but Moffat does the great things, and mixes it in with the terrible things. 6:15 "couldn't she have retold one of her classic adventures" YES, thats what I thought she was about to do! When she started reciting Harry Potter, I think my eyes widened more than any other time in the episode. Oof, that didn't age well... The only episode to really establish that was 'The Doctor's Wife'. The rest of the time it was just really unfunny or lame moments from Series 7, or the Doctor talking to the Tardis (which they would do regardless if it was alive or not). Even if you're going with the viewpoint of "The Doctor is space-jesus, they would never ever kill they are so pure" then I think it's justifiable. These Daleks were established as some of the most lethal, sacrificing one Tardis is a totally fair exchange even for her. I do wish there was a scene discussing it, but It would have ruined the cool twist IMO. You could also see it as the Doctor's emotional instability coming to light, as she destroys the Tardis because it reminds her of home (which was heavy subtext in the recent stories)

I tend to value Dalek stories based on how well they handle the Daleks, and so far Chibnall has impressed me with his two Dalek stories. I was worried that Resolution was a fluke, but over the two stories there are more iconic Dalek moments than in Russell or Moffat's Who. In fact, I think there are more exterminations in Revolution of the Daleks than in the entire Moffat era. I love the direction in this story, every scene with the Daleks in is exceptionally shot, with focus on the eyestalk of whichever Dalek is talking and some great scenes of them flying around with great CGI. Some great lines, particularly 'THERE IS ONLY ONE PURIFICATION' which I love. The fact that the Death Squad is all made up of Bronze Daleks reminds me of the uniformity of the Dalek ranks seen in The Daleks, Genesis of the Daleks and several others. My favourite thing about the entire episode is the scene on the bridge with the two Dalek factions actually talking to each other, which is something that Remembrance of the Daleks neglected to do. Overall, great Dalek story, and a pretty great episode overall, one of the highlights of this era. Edit: Also, hopefully Series 13 will finally have an episode set in Liverpool!

20:31 Obviously Chibnall has plans for Robertson in a future story, but the fact the Doctor doesn't take steps to make sure that he doesn't get off scot-free is baffling. If the 10th Doctor could do that with Harriet Jones, why can't the 13th Doctor ruin Robertson's reputation? At least with Harriet Jones her actions were justifiable to an extent considering the Sycorax were threatening to kill one third of the world's population if they didn't agree to be their slaves.

I genuinely loved this episode. By far one of the best Chibnall Era stories, and definitely one of the best and most intimidating Dalek presentations since Stolen Earth. The writing was pretty good this time around, the character interactions were good, Captain Jack was brilliant as usual, the production values were off the charts. Easily the best part of the episode for me however, was that Gwen Cooper mention. Hoping this hints at something bigger in the future. One thing I was a bit confused about, is that they didn't credit any of the creators of the different alien species we saw throughout the episode. Normally when using a monster from a previous writer, they put their name in the closing credits. For example, it should've said: Daleks created by Terry Nation Cybermen created by Kit Peddler and Gerry Davis Skithra created by Nina Métivier Thijarians created by Vinay Patel Ood and Sycorax created by Russell T Davies Weeping Angels and Silence created by Steven Moffat

One of my biggest gripes: The Doctor _kills off_ a TARDIS by sending her into the void and explicitly says it's going to be destroyed. Also, how do you get a TARDIS into the void? There was no mention of any safe guard having been dropped and I'm pretty sure I got from some source that there are safeguards. And my main point: her doing that while she's all cuddly wuddly with her own TARDIS makes this feel so wrong. "I'm thinking my sisters have been devoured and we're looking at their corpses". That's one line from _The Doctor's Wife_ . Her own TARDIS should not allowed for that, but... I'm expecting consistency with lore that could hypothetically be perfectly cohesive, but nobody ever bothers, despite there being so many sources from which you can gather what a TARDIS does how. And apart from the characterisation being ignored: They _had a flipping second TARDIS_ !! Off the cuff I can't come up with anything but I've a gut instinct that something good could have been done with that second TARDIS being around. If only becoming an actual home base or something like that. Also, that one TARDIS flight where Ryan has his talk, that's not how a TARDIS works. It's a scruffy old thing designed to be flown by multiple people at once. You canonically _do not have an autopilot_ . One person has got to whizz around the console, as so many examples of lore have shown.

I'm honestly really surprised neither Jack nor the doctor spoke up when the fam complained she'd been missing 10 months, when the doctor had been missing literally years in prison. They'd been living normal lives so insignificant we were never even shown them, and as you say it really does hurt ryan's departure. If he's saying he prefers his mates and my response is 'who'? He really could've used more setup. Given his closest relation on earth still seems to be graham, and that graham still wanted to stick around, there should've been more conflict there. Still, their departure is emotionally sound even if more could've been done on-screen to support it. Let's look forward to season 13 and see what happens. I'm really hoping for more character development. Graham's grief was a fantastic through-line and a more consistent version of that kind of thing would make for a nice series through-line.

I personally think it's the best Dalek story since 2009's Prisoner of the Daleks, and a... decent enough character study of the companions. It actually really helped finally solidify the Fam's place in the Doctor Who universe for me, but then they left. I was actually a fan of how they were characterised in the latter half of Series 12, but man we needed this earlier! If we're looking as Revolution as a pure pepper-pot adventure, it's top notch. It's the most fun, yet also most threatening Dalek story since The Stolen Earth. It managed to cramp down that entire invasion into such a small amount of time but it was so compelling. The scenes of the Drones activating and slaughtering people was insane, and the SAS Daleks arriving was just magnificent. I really do wish that the Recon Scout Dalek was more akin to the Daleks from 'Prisoner of the Daleks' where they were genuinely cruel and compelled genuine hatred from the reader, but I honestly didn't mind. However, there is a massive problem when the Donald Trump parody is the most compelling character of the episode. But I do applaud Chibnall for making one of the most universally disliked characters from one of the most universally disliked episodes into a proper, enjoyable character. Overall, this episode just proved once again that Chibnall is just fantastic at the classic villains. Look at how iconic his Silurians are, look at how beloved Sacha's Master and Ashad are. I think it's a testament to his Monster-Writing abilities that episodes like The Timeless Children managed to actually keep the Cybermen as a compelling part of the story (Something both RTD and Moffat spectacularly failed in). Revolution had the Daleks competing for screen time with so many other scenes, but man the time they spend on screen is just fantastic. If Series 13 were more of this, even with the dodgy character development, I would be completely down for it.

For what it’s worth, I really liked this story. My only real issues being pacing as well as anticlimax. The Doctor’s in prison... oh wait she isn’t anymore. The Daleks are taking over... no they aren’t anymore. Robertson’s dealing with Daleks... you get the picture. Stuff like the SAS Daleks get a lot of build up and are just gotten rid of. I think it should have been a two parter, two hour long episodes, and the Doctor doesn’t escape prison until at the end of Part One, and the first hour, she is doubting herself until Jack gives her a pick-me-up and she comes in with a ‘Man who stops the monsters’ moment and cliffhanger. Beyond that, all I’d change is more scenes of the Civil War but beyond that... yeah, pretty solid episode, 7/10 wait, how did the Dalek clone build that facility in Osaka when it was implied that Leo just built and cloned it? I can’t imagine he’d clone it into existence and wait a year before showing it to his boss. And it takes him over immediately, so there wasn’t a Time-Jump.

What a very balanced review. I am so, so fed up of all these people just hating on it so much, even supposedly respected review sites have been bashing on it. I wish they had this level of level headedness. You definitely and quite rightly pointed out this episodes many, many flaws, but also it’s many strong points (which some of these said reviewers label also as bad points... grr.) My thoughts are on the show that if the show really is as awful as people say it is, why would somebody like nick briggs, who loves his who and consistently makes quality who himself, be happy to appear in it and market it if it was so terrible. He plays daleks and cybermen all the time at big finish. Surely it’s not just the pay check. And the promotional video he did he seemed genuinely happy with revolution. So if someone who should by all rights be able to tell good who when he sees it still enjoys the show in its current form, surely there must be something worthwhile that those jumping on the hate wagon just can’t/refuse to see. I somehow doubt he does it solely for the money. This is the BBC we’re talking about.

I agree with you the Doctor was not even one bit serious about changing the timeline to keep the Fam together. She was vocalizing what her alternative could be; telling the audience and Yaz the wrong thing she could do, and then showing she won't. I like that moment a lot. As opposed to me intensely hating Hell Bent for the Doctor killing people to resurrect Clara. Policing is inherently problematic, so those Dalek casings would still be harmful even if they had zero Dalek influence. I mean these are weapons as police; they would kill. Human AI would be modeled off our same biases and exist to enforce the rule of capital. Or a trace of Dalek AI in those casings would probably mean no racism, misogyny, xenophobia, etc. but would just escalate to all-out extermination. Those casings would always be problem. Replace them with any other fictional alien race, ones much more benevolent in contrast to the Daleks, and you still have weaponized drones terrorising the streets. Clara and Bill only left the Doctor by dying, which is such a dumb thing I have to say. Amy and Rory 'left' by having some dramatic exit that was treated like a death.
