Series 12's Revolution of the Daleks introduces us to one of the most insidious variants of Daleks to date - the Defence Drones. But what are they?
All footage belongs to the BBC. Music by Frank Klepacki (Timebomb - C&C Tiberian Sun soundtrack, Heroism - C&C Tiberian Sun soundtrack)

It was nice in this story to see the daleks do some actual exterminating after so long. I think they did more in this one episode then all of Moffat.

For all the problems I have with Chibnall’s era, I can’t deny that he knew how to write the Daleks properly. Honestly kinda hope that he comes back to write a Dalek story or two in RTD2.

I really liked the Defense Drone Daleks. After 10+ years of faithful service from the bronze/Time War Daleks, I thought the time was ripe for a new look to the Daleks; and these ones looked sleek and deadly, a good upgrade for television. This video reminds me of how disappointed I was when they were killed off in their only appearance, almost like Chibnall acknowledging that the Time War design could never be replaced.

@@lordferbus2970 In hindsight, that seems obvious; and maybe I bought into the hype. There's a Radio Times cover promoting this special that referred to the Defense Drone Daleks as "the new Daleks"; and, granted, that's nothing more than hype and promotion. But, after 10+ years of the Time War design, I was ready for a change.

I wouldn’t necessarily have liked to have seen them because permanent design per say but I think it would have been more terrifying if they had been the only Daleks to appear in this episode, with the death squad Daleks appearing even later in the story of better yet not at all. This was my really only major gripe with the story is that the Recon drones barely get anytime to shine before they are destroyed off screen. I also loved the design, there were so many references to classic who which I always love. Shame we didn’t see more of them. Xx

I think the reaction to the Paradigms caused the production team to be 'cautious' about potential replacements. Things like the DDs are probably intended to test the water.

To be honest, the Defence Drone Daleks are probably one of my more quiet favourite designs of the many Dalek variants, and seeing them face off against the Bronze Death Squad/Time War Dalek Variants continues to make me giddy watching - as limited as it was - even today. If they are a one-off, then I'm fine with that, though scarily I could imagine that the Defence Drones being made in real life, though probably more for what they were originally intended for.

on paper I think this is all really cool! Definitely the most original concept for Daleks in a while. But unfortunately, the execution is a different kettle of fish and most of it is due to the shortcomings of the Chibnall era and coming off as plagiarising better Dalek stories (Victory and Blood most prominently), on a side note, I wish the Paradigm design made a brief return as the leader of the Death Squad, that would have been a treat for the few fans that design had!
@TheNickofTime
@TheNickofTime Жыл бұрын
I find it interesting that the Defense Drone Daleks didn't provoke the same tsunami of backlash the last redesign did, despite being in many ways even less faithful to the fundamentals of Dalek design than the Paradigms were. There are certain 'rules' of designing a Dalek that even the Paradigms didn't break, that the Defense Drones did, and yet they got away with it this time. It helps that their presentation in the episode is more tactful, with the way they were clearly defined as a one-off oddity that wouldn't be overstaying its welcome. I think the sheer arrogance of the Paradigm Daleks' introduction, sweeping aside the bronze ones with complete confidence that 'our ones will be better', was more to blame for antagonizing the fanbase than the design itself was.
@DevCakeProductions
@DevCakeProductions Жыл бұрын
I think another major factor as to why the paradigms failed was besides the "our daleks are better" it's also the fact that they didn't do much in there introduction episode. They come in, kill the original bronze daleks. Miss the doctor when firing at him, and then they leave. Besides that you also had the worst choice of set for a dalek ship with the whole industrial kitchen ordeal. I'm sure if the props weren't phased out because of issues using them the fanbase would of eventually gotten use to the designs, but it doesn't change just how weak of an introduction they got. I will say though, although many consider them bad, I really do love them and wish they got a proper short at being daleks.
@crimsong8068
@crimsong8068 Жыл бұрын
I think the Paradigm was less "our Daleks are better" and more, "Hey, new era! New design!" They always came off as a creative choice rather than a "screw you" to fans. In a way, I think it was supposed to be a "passing of the torch" from the bronze Daleks since they created the Paradigm. I think had Moffat stuck with whatever story he had planned, the Paradigm Daleks would have been accepted and maybe even liked. I hope one day we find out what that story was... (Big Finish pls?)

The Defense Drones were a neat idea, and it was a great breath of fresh air for a Dalek story. That being said, there are two gripes I have with it. 1. The Daleks were successfully conquering Earth, but they gave it up because "purity." (I get that's the point, but the "real" Daleks should have recognized the tactical value of the impure Daleks like they did in "Revelation.") 2. Why did nobody remember the very public Dalek attacks of the 2000s? (Stolen Earth was erased, I think) but the Fall of Torchwood still happened, Daleks should still be recognized and feared by the public. These feel like important details that were skipped over for no real reason... but other than that, Revolution is a pretty decent story. Scary to see what just one Dalek could achieve.

Didn't Moffat reset the universe at the end of S5 as an attempt to definitively establish the idea that DW's continuity was non-existent?
@crimsong8068
@crimsong8068 Жыл бұрын
@@KitchenSinkSoup He sort of did... it think it was more that the cracks caused certain events to be erased. Hence why no one remembers the "Cyberking." But certain events are still referenced afterwards. Like the fall of Torchwood is mentioned in "Spyfall," so that still happened. I'm not sure about Stolen Earth, because I heard those events were erased and that's why Davros survived. Also, "there is no continuity" is just an excuse for writers to be lazy.

Funny enough red lights show that the death ray is weaker than the Blue one fired by the main Daleks, as Red light has less energy than Blue light. This likely is due to the limitations of Earth Tech to build the Drones from. Likely not done on purpose but it does fit the theme as well.

Though I'm a bit of Dalek purist, I did really like the Defence Drone Daleks, and while they did have the Dalek-drawn-by-a-5-year-old look, they also had a layer of Dalek-built-with-limited-human-tech. It's sort of an aspiration to something you could never truly recreate and also foolishly recreating something you presume to understand, it's delightfully hubristic

So hold on a gosh darn moment.... What exactly is the timeline in the series again? I mean how many times have the Daleks invaded the UK alone in recent memory; you'd think more than a few people would recognize the pepper pots after all the chaos they caused over the years. I havent watched since Capaldi left - just too cheap to pay for the streaming services.

New Who takes the same approach that Classic Who did - unless the events of a previous episode are directly relevant to the current episode, they're usually overlooked. There's a great moment in Remembrance of the Daleks where Ace questions this, asking why nobody from her own time remembers Daleks rampaging around London in 1963. The Doctor replies by sarcastically berating Humanity for having "an amazing capacity for self-deception", and lists a couple of other high-profile alien attacks from earlier in the series like the Zygon gambit with the Loch Ness Monster and another time when there were Yetis in the London Underground. New Who took the same approach from episode 1 - Jackie witnesses the Auton attack, then seems to have completely forgotten about it a year later. Steven Moffat offered an explanation in his series, in that timeliness are in flux and "temporally sensitive" events aren't retained in the memories of the general population for long. The giant Cyberman from the Next Doctor Christmas Special is cited as an example - because the Cybermen fell back through time, and because they were defeated using wibbly-wobbly time technology, the population don't retain their memories of the attack for long and soon forget. Remember in Series 6 when Rory fell into a time field and everyone forgot him, including Amy? It's the same basic premise but applied on a bigger scale

I get it. Doctor Who is a British show, but if aliens were to want to take over a government in hopes of influencing the world, and getting it ready for takeover, the British Isles would be the last place they would go. They 'd invade China or the USA to make that happen, not the UK.
@dalekbumps
@dalekbumps Жыл бұрын
It doesn't really matter to the Daleks - they're advanced enough that any foothold on the planet is as good as another. They have no interest in taking over the pre-existing governments or infrastructure of Earth, theyre far more likely to simply wipe the US, China or any other large nations off the map completely. They do seem to like islands though - they've made several incursions in Manhattan as well as the UK. I suppose it makes it easier for them to consolidate their forces if they quickly conquer a Human-controlled landmass and use that as a staging area for their global conquest.
