MarieClare, this is cool. When the times comes, you can start your re-watch and Adam's first watch of Classic Who from the beginning. And I'm sure you'll catch things you missed from your first watch. You both enjoy the journey 🙂👍

I totally agree while it is noted that the special effects aren't great but that's part of the charm of Classic Who you just have to suspend your disbelief that's all you can do when you watch an old story i personally love the bubblewrap monsters and the tin foil robots and what we love about your reactions is your realistic.

Costume Designer Jim Acheson actually based Tom's look on a Art Nouveau poster of a French singer, by the Post-Impressionist Henri Toulouse-Lautrec. So a bit of culture there, innit.

I'm glad you chose the best story and Tom Baker being the first classic Doctor to introduce to your boyfriend as Tom Baker was my first and my Doctor and "Pyramids of Mars" the second Dr. Who story i ever saw on VHS as a child ashame you didn't show him the original version though but either way it's always awesome to see a new classic who reactor so welcome 😊.

Well put, indeed. I should think *Pyramids of Mars* would have been one of my personal five finalists for its foreboding atmosphere, eerie music and - of course - the height of the stakes at risk. 🤔

In the original version you can actually see a stage hand moving behind the chair as the villian rises off it.

Remember that this version has been edited down for pace. Adam will definitely notice the difference in pace if he watched the complete four episodes. This is probably the best Tom Baker story and although this version was still great, I did really miss the robot guardians/two buttons test on Mars where Sarah was trapped in a transparent cylinder prison running out of air.

It's Adams first introduction first impression and great he is not hung up on comparing to modern shows. The acting and storys are what makes it watchable and the effects just enhance those and good imagination can make up for any low budget low tech techniques.

Fascinating to see Adam have his first taste of Classic Who, and a fine story with which to start - of course, if he does watch the whole classic series then he will be able to watch this story in its full length version, with all the original effects. Really looking forward to seeing Adam start on that journey, whenever it happens, and to see if MC changes her views much from her first watch. I had never thought of the fourth Doctor being modelled on Gene Wilder’s Wonka. I don’t think he was, but there is an alien quality to Wilder’s performance which does have a Doctorish vibe.

It's kind of strange, to me, that they edited the end but not the beginning - where the action arguably slows down. But I think that's about retaining the atmosphere of the piece. 'Pyramids' was not, as the title card suggests, ultimately by Lewis Griefer (who made it all about Egyptian mythology but I think seemed to forget this was Saturday night entertainment) but what Producer Phil Hinchcliffe often described as a 'Page 1 Rewrite' by Robert Holmes. And if that makes it sounds Illegitimate in some way, it's worth remembering that Holmes was already getting used to rewriting whole stories to fit the new 'Gothic Horror' model favoured by his boss - and turning out a few classics of his own. So his memory is kept intact - along with some subtle changes designed to link this 50 year old piece to the new series; as if to make it seem - George Lucas-style - that the later narrative was the intention all along.

Such a great story the 4ths early seasons was excellent still two different sutekhs think i preferred the original design i wander if Elizabeth sladen was alive she had replaced mel in the new story

I still don't understand why RTD would pick one of the most unpopular companions for a return he could had brought back Susan, Jo, Leela or Romana even though Mel has mellowed and not the screaming damsel in distress she once was that's how I see her character it's imprinted their forever I just don't understand it.

Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka didn't inspire Doctor Who. BUT - I think there's a good case to be made that he IS the Doctor. Note that in the second book he flies around in a 'glass elevator' and fights space-aliens.

Gene Wilder's portrayal of Wonka took a huge amount of inspiration from Patrick Troughton.

Astounding. Never once in the two-score-plus years that I have been an avid admirer of Baker's incarnation of the Doctor had it occurred to me to compare or contrast his persona with that of Gene Wilder, who would have been a simply _splendid_ candidate for the role if he hadn't been closely working with Mr. Brooks at the time! Baker's particular _gravitas_ and impressively resonant voice would have been a loss, yes - but the cloud of curly hair, the wide pale eyes, the hooked nose, the readily accessible eccentricity, the comic sensibility - it was all to be had there! (I suppose, anyway.) 🤯

Give the man his fiver! He's earned it, and could probably use a pint. :p Regarding your point about "silence is a good thing" when watching something, I tend to agree... but it doesn't make for the best reaction videos, which is literally what you've labelled this as! I'm more here for the discussions about whatever you're watching pre and post viewing, as are (I hope!) most others, so maybe labelling these videos as a 'Reaction/Discussion' is something worth considering.

I agree that the sonic is used too much in modern who. It's a get out of any situation multi tool unfortunately, unlike in classic who. Classic who didn't have to rely on it which made the story writing better. Be great to see Adam experience classic who, even if you do the odd story rather than the whole lot.

I admit to being a classic fan but I have to say that POM is a much better story than EOD. I’m old I know but Empire Of death is an old example of VFX over story. Pyramids Of Mars didn’t told the story of containing a dangerous foe and the lives scarified in doing so. The folly and desperation of scarman trying to reach his brother. Also an ending that made sense. The antagonist being defeated by the Doctor guile and also luck. The moment the Doctor pushes aside Scarmans body showing he is an alien, something they would never do these days. Don’t get me wrong, I like Ncuti and the gang but Doctor Who caters for the short of attention and simple resolutions. It’s TV you can watch while looking at your phone.
