It’s so crazy to think the advertising chose the year 2000 in that advertisement. What they chose as the somewhat distant future is now 20 years ago. Just shows how long the show has been going and really puts it into perspective

I think the Susan/David love story would have worked much better if they hadn't of made Susan act so much like a child - even in the first part of this story. She grows up a little too quickly to make the love story believable. But the Doctor's goodbye speech to her is in the top 5 of Doctor Who tearjerkers.

She doesn't even grow up. She just has a crush on this guy who's like 25 and kisses him, and from that the Doctor thinks she should stay behind and marry him. She says no when when David proposes to her and tries to get back in the TARDIS, but the doctor locks her out...

"I think we better pit our wits against them and defeat them!" "Yes they dare and we've got to dare to stop them!" I think this story defined The Doctor's character for years to come, in season 1 he was very much trying to get back to the TARDIS and not wanting to interfere but here he makes a decision not to leave earth until the Daleks are defeated! The Doctor, the ultimate SJW! 😂

2:13 I don't mean to sound morbid but, it sounds like the poor guy had his entire family and pet rabbits killed be for he himself is gunned down. So much for 1964. In 2020, even just implying that children or animals are killed would be incredibly risky.

That slight hesitation Hartnell does, before starting his monologue. Like the Doctor (the FIRST Doctor of all people) thought he was ready, but then didn’t trust himself not to show emotion, so he had to pause and collect himself before beginning: “During all the years….” Beautifully done stuff.

'Conquer the Earth, you poor pathetic creatures, don't you realize, before you attempt to conquer the Earth, you will have to destroy all living matter' Not only is this a wonderful monologue and put down to the Dalek that came out of the river, but may have been the inspiration for the reality bomb many years later. Regardless of Billy fluffing his lines now and then, some of the best lines belonged to The First Doctor, and only William Hartnell could do them, he was The original, you might say.

I love the throwaway lines of early Doctor Who before they knew what Timelords were. Like 'Grandfather's old now". Meanwhile 1000 years later and he has the body of a middle aged woman. I kind of wish they never had Susan be a Timelady. Like if it wasn't for the Five Doctors, you could retcon Susan as someone of a humanoid species who the Doctor found on one of his first trips off Galifrey and convinced her to stay with him as his Granddaughter.

0:54 Oh, those were the days. Renember the year 2000? We celebrated the new millennium, VHS died out...well, along with half the Earth’s population when the Daleks landed. I’m sure we all had a mate who had a sudden mandatory career change to a Roboman after that whole malarkey. Tell you what, though: the best political change the Daleks ever made was exterminating Westlife. You can’t say they didn’t get things done back then; had we known Brexit was gonna be a thing, we wouldn’t have bothered rising up for liberation after Bedfordshire blew into pieces. Anyway, nostalgic rant over.

Her goodbye comes off as really sexist to me. She's 16, and he just leaves her with the first guy who comes along because it's what a "normal woman" should do. It'd be one thing if Susan actually wanted to stay on her own accord, but she says no to David and tries to get back in the TARDIS. Furthermore, the Doctor is obviously lying about coming back for her. We know from the 60 years of stories that he never does. But even at the time, the TARDIS was very random. I just have distaste for this scene and wish they'd just written her as wanting to leave on her own accord for whatever reason.

I grew up with Classic Who from 1971 onwards. For me Classic Who has "magic" and "charm." The "Blue Peter" practical effects were fun! The low budget show was creative and imaginative. When it was good, it was GREAT! ... I've fallen out of love with New Who. It's style over substance. Deafening music, sex-change Doctors, stupid stamping deleting Cybermen, and daft "brass" Daleks! For me, it's boring and forgettable. Unlike the Who of 50+ years ago, that still sticks in the mind! Long live Classic Who! ... Death to New Who! 🤣 Incidentally, although I love the TV original, I like the 1966 movie version even more, because I love shiny black PVC! 👍🤣

I love how younger Fans obsess over the special effects. None of these Chaps were part of that whole era where we'd pay hundreds of pounds just for an awful, almost pictureless copy of a rare story. It's not a bad thing lol, they just don't get it. Then again the section on the effects was brief and yes... falling Ian is bloody funny.

Wait so by Nu-Hu logic, Susan will eventually regenerate into a Man, and if that happens with David, and he doesn't turn gay... then he's a bigot. And there's a Man called Susan... Couldn't Whittaker just have been Romana in a spinoff?! I'd gnaw my head off in perplexed excitement if they'd done that.... just like Missy should have been the Rani, but the Producers just... aren't very bright these days...
