Some ideas for a better name than Super Up: Gallifrey Up or TARDIS Up. I liked the episode, but wanted more of the Doctor's Timeless Child's/Fugitive Doctor's history. The return of David Tennant was cool and makes some sense considering the whole forced regeneration/degeneration.

One thing I haven't seen anyone comment on, in these first-day reviews, are Tennant's first words after the regeneration. See, when he first regenerated out of Eccleston, his first comment was "New teeth! That's weird!" Whereas, he did the same little maneuver of running his tongue inside his teeth this time, but instead said "I know these teeth." Incredibly subtle touch!

People have these crazy theories of why that face again, and it’s this simple. She met two companions from the past. Thousands of years ago for her. After she degenerated from the Master, she was wearing old pieces of clothing from her past. She met some old faces at the cliff. This was a nostalgia trip for us viewers. But it was for the Doctor too. Just as 10 was born from 9’s love, 11 born from 10’s loneliness, 12 born from 11’s hope, and 13 born from 12’s kindness, 14 is born from her NOSTALGIA. An old face that wanted more time too. That never quite got to be at peace.

i stumbled upon a really good theory that the reason why jodie regenerated back into ten (and somehow regenerated into a new pair of clothes) is the doing of the celestial toymaker, after looking into donna's mind and only seeing ten in her 'blocked off' memory of her adventures, pretty plausible considering the celestial toymaker is basically a god

For me the greatest moment was Ace and Sylvester - I always felt bad at how they essentially fell out, and that on into the New Adventures novels their relationship became fractious and difficult. Yes, he has a bad habit of throwing WAY too many plotlines into an episode, and then has to rush to resolve everything (and usually not in a particularly logical way at that) but this episode was highly enjoyable and really a wonderful way for his (and Jodie's) tenure to end. I will be accused of recency bias here but he was as good a master as we have EVER had. The best masters always ride that line between genius and maniacal. He was genuinely threatening whilst being hilarious - if you're not careful that could lead to people rooting for him, but he manages to be so evil that you still want him to lose. People look at past masters through rose tinted spectacles - every single one has been in the odd clunker of an episode which could tarnish a legacy (Time-Flight, anyone?). That being said, with the material he had, Sacha Dhawan deserves his place amongst the greatest Masters/Missies.

My personal theory is that since 10 didn't want to regenerate in the first place, he's been trying to escape regeneration limbo and only managed to get his chance when 13 regenerated. The next few specials will see 10 trying to bring meaningful closure to his own life and learn to move on so that Gatwa can have his chance as The Doctor, a sort of allegory for Russell coming to terms with how bitter The End of Time finished

The scene of the companions all gathered, there was one empty chair, and my headcanon is that was set there for Liz Sladen/Sarah Jane, since of all the companions, she interacted with the most versions of the Doctor. (Those being 1, 2 and 5 in the 5 Doctors, 3-4 she was the companion of, 10 she met in Doctor Who as well as SJA, and 11 she met in SJA.) Bringing non-canon in, The Brig is close to that number…so it could’ve been for him as well (1 in The 5 Doctors, 2-5 he worked with, 6 he was on screen with in the non-canon 30th anniversary, and 7 in Battlefield. If you bring in the Cyber-Brig and 12, that ties him with Sarah Jane, but as that wasn’t Nicolas Courtney…I don’t count it.) Note: Those numbers above are only on screen and do not include audio or comic/books, so if those numbers are different than what you thought, that is why.

I think you should say Sonic Up and Dalek Down. I loved the episode. I do think the story is a bit thin without all the cameos. I did love see them though. Completely unexpected. I do like that Ace and Tegan were essential to the plot. I did think both Dan and Vinder was wasted both here and in “Flux.” I didn’t love the writing for Thirteen’s era but I find myself mourning her loss/death, the same way I did with Ten-Twelve. I do love that the title “Power of the Doctor” means something. I think “Stolen Earth”/”Journey Home” did it a little better because they didn’t have to spell it out in the episode title. But I love that the “Power of the Doctor” is that they’ve effected people and influenced people and that those people will always be there to help. And Kate finally got to see the inside of the TARDIS. I love Thirteen’s last words of “tag - you’re it” And I love that the new Doctor’s first words are "I know these teeth." It's the perfect first words. The regeneration into Ten has to be because of the forced regeneration and then the degeneration. So I don’t think its permeant because the clothes changed and the clothes never change. And we see Ncuti wearing Ten’s clothes in the trailer. I love that he is using his real accent and I hope he doesn’t keep the mustache. It doesn’t work.

I think the clothes changing for the regeneration scene may be driven by practical things - Tennant is 6'1'' whereas Whittaker is 5'5'', so, if as usually happens, the clothes remained the same, it would have looked a bit silly with Tennant in Whittaker's costume. When Davidson regenerated into Baker, Davidson's cricket themed costume looked a bit tight on Baker. Going back to the very first regeneration scene when the first Doctor regenerated, the second Doctor's clothes also changed (apart from the first Doctor's cape, which fell off to reveal his costume, minus his coat). Also, when Tom Baker regenerated into Peter Davidson, Baker's trademark boots changed into shoes for Davidson (although this may have been a continuity oversight).

She screams, we cut away to something else, then we come back, and she just walks into the control room, apparently unharmed. Oh wait! I know! “I’ll explain later.” :) And, finally, where did the Daleks go? In the scene where 13 is still inside the Dalek shell, and the Master is, well, being the Master… we see them surrounded by Cybermasters and Daleks. A Dalek and a Cybermaster even exchange confused looks, when the Master starts dancing to Rasputin. But in the scenes immediately following this, the Daleks are gone, and there appear to be extra Cybermasters in their places. This is before we the group of Daleks teleport out, to complete their volcano plan. They are just gone! Why did Graham show up, out of the blue, at the volcano? I’ll explain later… :) Why did they still destroy UNIT HQ? The Cyberman were defeated prior to that. All those UNIT personnel were unceremoniously killed. I hope the Osgoods weren’t home at the time. I hope some of the things from this episode are signs of things to come. RTD apparently wants to create several spin-offs. A UNIT show, perhaps? Which might also feature the Doctor’s secret army (former companions) either as a part of UNIT, with their own show? The return of Elton, joining them? :) Shows devoted to the Doctor’s foes, such as the Daleks, and the Cybermen, starting from either the reinforcement of their alliance from this episode, or its dissolution? Personally, I would love to see a mini-series on the Time War, and catch up with whatever Susan is up to, these days. I recently saw that they did ask Tom Baker to reprise his role for this special, but he turned them down, presumably due to his age. I think this is a bit of a cop out. If William Russell could put in a cameo, at the age of 97, you would think Tom Baker could make the effort, at a younger, spry, 88… :) it saddens me that we didn’t get to see Tom again, in what may well be the last chance to see him reprise the role one more time. Hopefully, he will pop up in one of the three 60th anniversary specials. The one thing that was missing for me, was Elisabeth Sladen. We were lucky enough to get a few seasons of the Sarah Jane Adventures, before her untimely passing, as well as in a couple of episodes of NuWho. She was a huge character in the show, but was not even referenced in this story. I hope her character is acknowledged in the upcoming specials. Cheers,

“Doctor Who… It just makes me so happy!” Yes. Yes it does. The emotion in Ellie’s voice when she said that reflects my feelings exactly - and I’ve been feeling this since the mid 70’s. The show is not always perfect but in my eyes the show has given me so much and, to be fair, these fan stories, okay they can lose the casual viewer, they give so much. Oh, to see Ian again! Thank you!! Doctor Who: it just makes me so happy.

Before watching your take: So having watched Power of the Doctor, Jodie Whittaker's final episode, I have to ask; why did it take Chris Chibnall so long to tell a complex multifaceted story, and give it a satisfying conclusion? Why did we have to wait until the final episode to have Jodie's Doctor acting like the Doctor? As is typical for Chibnall's writing, he had a lot of ideas here. The Master! Daleks! Cyber men (Masters?)! Teegan's back, and Ace! UNIT's here too (though not for long eh?)! Why not bring back Vinder while we're at it? It all had the potential to be very messy. But it wasn't. By and large. It wasn't flawless; Vinder ends up in 1916 with little to no explanation ( would have been better have Yaz pick him up in the TARDIS), but all the threads eventually weaved into a cohesive whole. The plot worked, and the pacing was a good. When the the Doctor triumphs, it's because she outmaneuvers the master, laying the ground work before she even goes to confront him and, though in the end there was a little dumb luck, they win by using the Enemy's strength against them. All of it layered with generous helpings of nostalgia. But it's in this nostalgia that few flaws are exposed. Teegan and Ace were amazing, and their scene do a great job of capturing their personalities, and provide closure for both. The scenes of the two of them interacting with their versions of the Doctor really sang, and nailing the two Doctor's personalities. They were beautiful little scenes which really hit an emotional beat. And here lies the problem. I felt more emotion for them than I did for Jodie and Yaz. This should have been her Swan song, but instead it felt flat. The Ace and Teegan scenes worked because of their established relationships. Yaz and thirteen had only just started, 5 years in. Amongst this Doctor's final words were; "I wish I could see what comes next." With Russel T Davies' return right around the corner, l wish she could too. 7/10 P.S. 90% certain we had the Master Rasputin purely so that we could have them dancing to Bonie M, and I think I'm OK with that.

Did anyone notice the Star Trek references in this episode? They were too specific to be coincidental. The Doctor and Yaz touching hands while separated by glass(STII), a device that could freeze volcanic eruptions(ST Into Darkness), and the clincher of the cyber moon's implosion which is a near perfect recreation of Vulcan's destruction in ST 2009 complete with the Tardis racing away exactly as the Enterprise did

Honestly, Sacha Dhawan's Master is probably my favourite. He perfectly portrays everything I think the Master should be: gleefully psychotic, yet somehow you warm to him; a little frightening, but not necessarily in a bad way; knows the Doctor perfectly, and has a roaring hatred inside, as well as being a sort of polar opposite for the Doctor; and being a master (pun intended) at making devious plans.

Definitely more ups than downs for me: -The scene in The Doctor's psyche with the other Doctors (A good way to get them in, but not distract from the story) -Tegan and Ace getting a chance to talk to their respective Doctors -The companion meeting group at the end. WITH WILLIAM RUSSELL! OMG! -Kate getting into the TARDIS finally -The Journey's End console scene recreation -The hilarious reaction of the Dalek and Cyberman during the Rasputin song For me, this was a good finale.

I was pleasantly surprised by how good an ending it was for 13. In typical Chibnall fashion it was a bit messy and didn't make a lot of sense, but it was still easily one of his strongest stories - it was genuinely _exciting_ which has always been one of his weakest points. I also think the ep did a pretty great job of actually earning all of its fan-service; when I first saw Ace and Tegan in the teaser I thought it looked a bit desperate, but I actually really enjoyed their inclusion and it felt like Chibbers actually wanted to add something to the recurring theme of "forgotten companions". On that note, I loved the support group at the end (my jaw dropped when I saw William Russell - 97 years old!), although I would've liked a little more closure for Graham in particular because I'm _still_ salty about the whole "awkward cancer chat" thing from S12

The train part was actually a threefold purpose 1) to enable Dan's exit 2) to pay homage to her very first episode 3) most important to bring in the little girl who the master would later use as an energy source to power the cyber planet and 4) a bluff to make people think the child was the timeless child and if it got leaked would seem like that was where the episode was going when in reality it was a totally different direction. Graham being in the volcano wasn't really that unexpected, when he and Ryan left they said they were going to be the equivalent of the home guard for Earth and investigate phenomena on the planet. There was a very small and very subtle in my view reference to the Timeless Child and fan theories with Vinder and his arrival and departure, other than his obvious wild card against the Master a companion who will shoot him and did.

I disliked the fan service in this episode. It would have been good if it had been earned. But Chibnall's run has not been well received by fans being mostly boring and forgettable, prioritising messages over story and characterisation, and messing with continuity. I really loved this episode, especially that it felt like a lovely little tribute to classic Who (at least I assume that's why the majority of the cameos were pre-reboot), especially that Colin Baker...who lets face would have legitimate reasons to be done with Doctor Who...got to actually appear in the show again (I love the skit he was part of for the 50th but it's not really the same thing). Also that Teagan and Ace got to have reunions...of sorts...with their Doctors. Sure that Companions Anonymous (probably not the name but I'm calling it that anyway lol) was fan service, but it's the kind of fan service I'll let slide. I'm gonna be honest, I'm...I feel like one of the few not massively hyped for another go with Tennant. I feel more positive about it after seeing the trailer (cos it actually feels like they're going to address it rather than just wave away why 10 is back for the sake of fanservice) but...I'm gonna be honest it feels a bit gimmicky and I don't 100% trust RTD to get it right. Before the fanboys/girls come after me I'm prepared to be proven wrong. I agree with most of this except the forced regeneration. It seemed like a lot of work for the master to basically play dress up. I just dont understand why he couldn’t knock the doctor out or tie her up and do the same thing. It didn’t make a bunch of sense to me. I loved the end. I didn’t understand how Graham got to the volcano but I guess we will never know. As far as the teaser goes I am super excited for Ncuti because there was something about his energy in that one line that reminded me of my favorites of the first 3 doctors of the reboot. I am like Ellie in that I never got into the classics but I like the energies of Chris, David and Matt. You could conceivably have had any of the following Martha, Mickey, Wilf, Brian Williams, Adam Mitchell, both Osgoods, Sally Sparrow, Craig and Stormageddon, Courtney Woods, Lady Christina, Luke Smith maybe. You could have also had Grace Halloway. I know there are real world reasons some of them couldn’t have possibly shown up but still. The one that got me though was Mel. Overall I enjoyed it and for mindless popcorn entertainment it was a fine send off. The one thing that keeps nagging at the edge of my subconscious - did anyone else feel like this was written after Chibs watched Journey’s End and especially the 50th Anniversary special and had those story points firmly…”nagging at the edge of his subconscious”? I mean the whole paintings being used by the villain…the 26 nuclear bombs to end the world from Journey’s end are so reminiscent of the Daleks unsettling the tectonic plates (was it 26 volcanoes?) Kate Stewart, Ace’s fall into the TARDIS reminded me both of Matt Smith hanging on to the TRDIS and picking up River Song when she jumped out a building xlll, etc etc it just seemed a jumble of ideas that had almost all come before. Which still worked and helped underscore a celebratory, anniversary feel so not complaining, just curious if anyone else felt the strange familiarity of it all? Loved when Tennant appeared with his signature 1st line re: teeth and his “what…What?….WHAT?” but how’d his clothes regenerate too??? Then again we have precedent as 1st -> 2nd Doctor this happened and 4 -> 5 his boots transformed into shoes! Always suspected Time Lord tech extends to clothing as well, allows time travelers of myriad cultures and planets to always be prepared. ;-) was nice seeing the companions - would have loved Luke & K9 to show up, and this idea could.d be a series of it’s own (I suppose it already is with Big Finish in a way - companions of the Doctor and what they do, especially when they work together, pulling their different experiences and comparing notes on their Doctors, could be a hoot for sure, but must have K9 and River to help out every now and then! Like Torchwood lite! All in all, Not bad and can’t wait for the Doctor Donna and the Second coming of RTD! Was hoping it’d be a Chrimbo 22 or even New Years 23 special but guess that would be too goood to be true, anyway, will be a long year of anticipation but in a good enjoyable way!mWoooooWhoooo! :-) :-) :-)

For your ‘Super Up’ I’d genuinely change it to the ‘FANTASTIC UP’ as a nod to the Ninth Doctor Christopher Eccleston and he always deserves a nod 😊

The train scene was a bookend for Jodie's Doctor - her first and last episodes started with her landing on a train.

I think one of my favourite parts of this episode had to be Tegan and Ace. And when Tegan was talking to Peter Davison and he said 'Adrik' ...that broke me. Can't wait to see what happens next and hope that the weird regeneration did mean something different both because it would be really exciting to see what happened and because I personally really don't want them to change the way they do regenerations as I find it really funny seeing the new Doctors run around in the previous Doctors' clothes for an episode. Also, final point, isn't it just *so* 10th Doctor to open with "I recognise those teeth"!

For me this episode has done 2 things: it’s left me reeling from everything that happened and has left me excited for what comes next. I’ve enjoyed Chris Chibnalls run (I actually like the Timeless Child retcon and appreciate that it has just been left there moving forward) but it never left me excited about what’s coming next… that ‘what?’ feeling. The Rasputin thing makes sense because of who Rasputin was: this mad weird character from history who had strange control over the Russian royal family. I thought Kate Stewart was ok. She was sheltering behind the table in my head and the scream during conversion mirrors Yvonne Harmans scream in Doomsday. The problem with a lot of modern Dr Who is that the narrative has to developed in a short period of time especially when you consider that in the classic series the story was developed over 4+ half hour episodes. This is particularly tricky in one and done episodes. Overall this episode gets a massive thumbs up from me.

Down: If the 13th Doctor was going to reregenerate back into any previous incarnation, it should have been Paul McGann's 8th. Tennant had his time and a very dragged-out exit from the show. McGann never really got his (TV) time to shine.

Just wondering, and I'll admit this is a thought late coming even to myself. Apart from trying to tarnish the Doctor's reputation, did anyone else think that he was also, in trying to take over the body of the Timeless Child, he was also trying to give himself the unlimited regnerations that story arc implied? Also, did anyone else subconsciously find themselves shipping Ace and Graham? :D

I think Chibnall played it safe by not bringing up the timeless child in this episode, it was a massively controversial canon change that Russel might not want to deal with in his new era.

I've gotta give such a super up to Tegan and Ace and their respective scenes with their doctors. I mean that was fan service but damn nation it was done so well, when I saw Tegan with the 5th Doctor I went "Okay, where's the 7th and Ace, come on...YES!!!" It was just so well written and performed by everyone involved. And yes, that final regeneration scene was just gorgeously shot, no big speech or grand showing just the Doctor, alone, saying goodbye and honestly it felt very in-character the way Jodie bowed out, little grin on her face and that little "tag...you're it." that was great. I honestly cannot wait to see where the story goes and how they write everything in, its gonna be a crazy ride ahead.
