3:30 Something interesting about this is that I have a 7 month old daughter. She’s currently in the process of learning how to sit and crawl and all that. I was just thinking recently about how we always try to protect our falls with our hands and legs. I was thinking about it because she DOESNT do that. She doesn’t have that instinct to protect her falls. She just hits her head. Which is fascinating to me because that has to be a learned response. Like, most people would say it’s instinctual, but we can observe the fact that it’s not because babies don’t have this instinct. It likely becomes a learned behavior by all the times we fall as kids.

As a Norwegian sports medic, we're taught that ice packs are mostly psychological, and it sure seems that way too. Everyone asks for an ice pack, when we know for a fact that what has the biggest impact is protection, rest and compression.
@ToxinBrewer
@ToxinBrewer 5 ай бұрын
I thought it was also to reduce swelling, is that a myth?
@Henoik
@Henoik 5 ай бұрын
@@ToxinBrewer Yes, that's a myth. Ice packs might, however, help with numbing the area for the time you have the ice pack on. But mostly it's still psychological really. The best thing you can do for the swelling is early application of compression (within the first 2-3 minutes of the injury). The first application of compression should be quite tight (remember, we're trying to restrict blood flow to the area) for about 15 minutes. Then, after 15 minutes, a looser compression can be put on, for the next 48 hours (but taken off when you are sleeping and showering). But under no circumstance do we want the compression itself to hurt or to cause numbing.
@vegetablescankill

I agree with the icing one. I sprained my ankle while living with my auntie and she never iced it once. She wrapped it and deep massaged it like twice a day and would very slowly roll my ankle around. It was sprained for about maybe 2-3 days before I could completely walk on it again. Auntie never iced, just massaged twice a day for about 5-10 minutes. I'm not at all saying that it's a hack but it seems it'll help more than just icing it and laying there waiting to heal. It did hurt, of course, when she was massaging it but with a new day, the pain reduced significantly.

9:30 I'm unfortunately very prone to ear infections due to "swimmer's ear" that stuff sucks, hurts like heck and doesn't go away for days on end. It happens so much my doctor actually just has that ear drop at the ready for refills, and I can actually tell ahead of time if I'm developing it, and unfortunately, I get it just naturally, haven't actually figured out what causes it but the only thing that makes sense to me is my ear canals are shaped in some way that traps water in it just from moisture in the air or something like that.

I dont have it that bad, but if i get water in my ears after a shower, then its like a 25% chance of a miserable time...

omg, THANK YOU for saying the bit about BP. my OBs were convinced i had pre-eclampsia because they would do my BP as soon as i walked through the door. mind you, the walk from the parking garage to the office involved flights of stairs and would take me 15 minutes to complete the walk. i had to beg them to take my BP at the end of each visit for a more realistic reading, and they always seemed astonished that it caused such a significant difference

the false hypertension thing drives me crazy. All of my doctor's that aren't primary care/medical take my blood pressure these days. The dentist and the optometrist always end up with high readings because they don't know anything about how to take it properly. The numbers have been so high a couple times I end up tracking my blood pressure three times a day for a couple weeks just to make sure.
