The psychological torture and trauma orcas go through in captivity is utterly abhorrent. It's telling that, in captivity, there have been multiple fatal attacks, while a human being has never been harmed by one in the wild. These highly intelligent and social animals basically lose their minds in places like SeaWorld from the horrors they endure for decades at our hands.

The fact that Seaworld didn’t stop orca acts not just for the sake of the orcas but also for the trainers is unforgivable. The fact that they didn’t immediately give up and decide it was too dangerous for trainers and too stressful for the animals after the first incident is downright disgusting.

That circus looks like such a cowboy operation. I've done a bit of very low level acrobatics stuff and everything about that trick is breathtakingly wrong. It looks to be either trying to flip both of them or the clown using the other guy as a base to flip himself, and neither should be attempted without someone who is trained in that x

I was there for the Rhode Island incident, when the acrobats hanging by their hair fell. Took my little sister and we had front row seats. I remember the audience had no idea what happened at first. We thought the drop was part of the act. Then they turned the lights off and asked us not to leave our seats. The circus staff was great and sent clowns into the audience to distract the kids while the ambulances did their thing. Between the circus, meeting a clown, and getting to see an ambulance, my sister thought it was the best day ever.

In the Ken Peters incident, they cite his survival to the fact that he was an experienced free diver, so every time he came up he was able to breathe efficiently and keep his heart rate down throughout the entire situation (she dragged him down far more than two times, to the bottom of the tank, for longer each dive.) Petes got out because he coincidentally had unrelated hobbies. Terrifying.

The group high wire fall is a classic example of experience causing safety complacency. A less experienced tightrope walker would request a safety net because they aren’t very confident in what they are doing and are more afraid of the danger, while the experienced tightrope walker has done it so many times that they think they couldn’t possibly make a mistake.

inclined to think the same for the hair hanging.if they're an established group doing their own rigging they're probably a little lax on how often they switch out their carabiners, i.e. 'oh yeah, that's pushing the 10% wear threshold but we're probably fine' and nobody bothering to disagree. Also they're professionals and it's a fixed, indoor attachment point, they really have no excuse to be using aluminum over steel.

They are likely also mentally and physically prepared for the worst whenever they are doing the dangerous stuff. After doing it for so long they had to have had other (though maybe less severe) accidents and their bodies probably instinctively react in ways that keep them safer- hold your breath and relax your body if an animal is dragging you underwater, tuck your chin to your chest if you’re falling backwards to try to prevent concussion, etc.

Barnum and Bailey circus came through recently and they had nets underneath the trapeze performers and they don't use animals anymore. It looked like an attempted assisted backflip for the last clip, but both the flipper and the assistant didn't know what they were doing. You barely need to do any lifting as the assistant, you just guide their legs over your shoulder, but the flipper splayed out, making his legs go over the guys face, and the guy didn't know to just move out of the way once the flipper's head was out from under to not be injured. Following that with a terrible carry was just a perfect video of what not to do.

4:47 Speaking of the strength of hair, they tested it on Mythbusters, they were testing alledged prison escapes, Kari made a rope out of hair and was successfully able to use it to climb down the side of a 3 story building. Just FYI, the other two: Grant used bed sheets and succeeded, Tori used toilet paper, his ripped and broke when he got to about a foot off the ground but he landed on his feet and it wasn't that high so they said "close enough". 9:00 That sort of looks like a professional wrestling move called the Spanish Fly, in that move, they hook up facing in opposite directions, and simulatenously flip, one doing a forward roll, the other doing a backflip, difficult to pull off and very dangerous. The killer whale incidents are very controversial, there's a documentary film called Blackfish that talks about the effects being in captivity has on orcas, There was one in particular that attacked several other orcas and killed 3 trainers. SeaWorld in particular has taken a lot of criticism for it and has been losing millions for years due to the backlash. They were talking about ending the orca program and shows at their parks, but seems like they've flip flopped on that. Several states have banned having orcas in captivity now though.

Exactly and why would he need someone to help him do a simple backflip. The proper way to spot is not to hang on to someone but a trainer holds there arm out and as one jumps up and back the momentum carries them. If one has trouble with the carry through of the legs then the spotter will assist in pushing them over quickly and react if they notice something, in fact belts with ropes are used for the young with one person on each side until eventually like training wheels they are let loose.

Watching Doctor Mike, as he knows which part of the body was injured in an accident amazes, impressed me. It's amazing how much he knows, even though he hasn't just learned them. Also, I think you learn a lot of things in med school, it's amazing to me that Mike only recognizes them by sight (and what could have been damaged). I want to be like that, that's all there is to know, maybe I'm going to med school. Thanks Doctor Mike! Also that you put on subtitles, so I can learn English, too, and I can write a comment like this. Keep it up! ❤️❤️❤️

I remember being at a circus, and they’re hole advertising plot is just a tri flip in the air. Went in. Got to the end, were she was going to do it. She failed and fell three times before giving up. (She’s fine, there was a net a few feet below her for when she fell)

Ann wasn't a trainer - she was a model that they hired for a special event. More of the incident is shown in the movie Blackfish. It also shows/discusses the event with Ken. The guy in the last clip was released from the hospital with no injuries. His name is Ben Garnham, and it was his first visit to the circus. He was expecting some silly clown shenanigans, not a backflip stunt, which he was unprepared for. He’s actually not mad at the clown, who he spoke to later on about the incident. He’s more upset about being carried like that after being knocked out. Not surprisingly, the circus is discontinuing that part of the show.

When I was a kid at the circus I saw a bad fall. One of those acts where the guy hangs upside down with a loop of rope around the back of his neck, and a girl on the other end underneath him spinning really fast. They were raised up probably 20+ feet, and there's a variation on that stunt where they let a foot or so of slack on the rope out and she drops down a bit. Oh no she fell, oh it's just part of the act, haha. Yeah, well that wasn't part of this act, the rope snapped and she fell. Wouldn't have been too bad a height to fall from except she was spinning so she had no control over the landing. She was badly injured. Worst part was a bunch of shocked kids watching a clown mop up a rather large pool of blood after they took her away. She survived, but had some severe neck and head injuries. Both ankles badly broken, and a lot of other fractures all the way up one side.

Hi Dr Mike! I think it would be cool if you did a book review on "When The Body Says No" by A Canadian doctor named Gabor Maté. It has a very interesting message that is valuable for people to hear but it also seems like, in my limited medical knowledge, there are some misleading statements. It would be interesting to have his claims compared with the literature.

Hi Mike. You should read the latest studies regarding C-Spine collars - they're very soon to be taken out of pre-hospital practice in the UK as there is growing evidence that more damage is caused by fitting them. We're using less invasive methods, orthopaedic stretcher and head blocks, to prevent further injury. And back boards are so out of date they're known to cause significant harm through sores and pressure in the wrong places. I know you're a family medicine Doctor, but you might find this interesting.

I'm so happy Orca training has improved so much since those videos. They are let to be social, have training methods changed with options to disengage, and many have better enclosures. (I can't say all, just because a lot of them have compromised immune systems where changing tanks and such would be dangerous for their health.) Training wild animals is still something that happens, but for zoos and aquariums it is for enrichment and safety purposes. (Ie many are taught tricks that get them to eat medicine or allow for easy transportation. Smarter animals can also be taught tricks to help keep their brains stimulated.) Circuses switching to animal-free and domestic only while dolphins get better welfare is so important. We still have many issues, such as valid pro and anti captivity debates or risking animal safety by poorly picking sea pen candidates, but we have made so many strides in the right direction.

I almost got a concussion at work when I was trying to adjust a rug that was leaning against a pallet and had started to slip down but I lost my footing and tripped and fell backwards on the hard cement floor. Thankfully my side/back bore the brunt of the fall so my head didn’t hit the concrete as hard but it was very close and I still got a medical assessment through the injury triage company we use at work just to be safe because I was a little dazed by what happened but at least I never lost consciousness.
