That episode was based on Fantastic Voyage, a 1966 science fiction film about a submarine crew who is shrunk to microscopic size and venture into the body of an injured scientist to repair damage to his brain. Bantam Books obtained the rights for a paperback novelization based on the screenplay and approached Isaac Asimov to write it. Its modern and imaginative production design received five nominations at the 39th Academy Awards mostly in technical departments, winning for Best Visual Effects and Best Art Direction in Color.

The most impactful scene is where Fry decides to ask “Does she love ME” And I think this in particular has a lot of parallels to people who take medication for neurodivergency and it raises the question of whether the medication helps or whether it just buries the true self and the importance of finding someone who loves the true self and not what the medication makes you become

Talking about the colonoscopy (sorry if my spelling is off) and how they work was actually really interesting to me. My grandma hit the age where she was supposed to get one as part of her yearly medical exam but refused to because she said she was scared. My grandpa, who is five years younger than her, wasn't due for one but scheduled one completely out of pocket just because he loved her so much he wanted to prove it wasn't scary by having one first. They caught colon/rectal cancer with his. He's now been nearly 25 years cancer free now. And, thanks to seeing how important the screening was, even though she probably wasn't particularly less scared after how his turned out, she did get her colonoscopy, and everything was fine for her.

It's sci fi, these parasitic worms could be working in some symbiotic or mutualistic fashion, though there's an episode in the recent season from last summer that also featured parasitic worms, possibly of a similar variety, but they're doing the reverse of what they did to Fry. Episode is even called Parasites Regained
