The Doctor really emphasising just how important it was to him that he tried to talk and understand these creatures is such an underrated gem

That's what makes The Doctor so unique amongst a multiverse of protagonists spanning over several genres, mediums of story telling, and even eras. Even when it is evident from the get-go that there is just no reasoning with the antognist, that they are just out to kill or destroy or enslave just because they can, he will still afford them as much opportunity as (in)humanly possible to try and explain why they are doing what they are doing and try to reason with them just in case they are misunderstood or victims themselves, even if it comes at a potentially great cost to himself. Whereas pretty much every other protagonist resorts to physical push back when cornored, The Doctor will instead choose to run away and try to think of a peaceful resolution for everybody for as long as he possibly can.

This series the doctor was wrestling with whether or not he was a good man. This speech is really about him saying his thoughts out loud to see what they hear like. He’s unsure about killing the boneless because he’s afraid what that will say about his character. So he’s saying the arguments out loud to check they make sense. He’s not saying this because he’s a good man. He’s saying it because he’s unsure if he is one. He’s trying to justify his actions to himself and anyone who might be listening.

@@DefectiveGrenade. The major thing is that sometimes they have a legitimate reason for their actions, and the Doctor will help them to their goal. In this case, as he said, he tried, but they didn't want to communicate. They were monsters, and he was the man that stops the monsters. Even then, some of them might survive the transfer back to their dimension. The Doctor is the "oncoming storm" because creatures are warned that his arrival is coming, and they have a chance to change their ways!

I agree totally. Capaldi turned out to be a solid doctor, but it took time for him to get there. Its insane how well Murray Gold addressed this in the music. I fell in love with Matt smith from his first episode, and his theme "I am the doctor" perfectly represents this from the first note. Comparably 12's theme "A Good Man" takes a while to get going, but when it does it is reminiscent of a James Horner Epic theme that capaldi has earned.

@@GamesFromSpace I kinda struggled with Capaldi at first. He was always just... okay. A lesser son of greater sires, as it were. It wasn't that he wasn't the Doctor, it's just that he was horribly overshadowed by Tennant and Smith's Doctors. 10 was the one who ran away, and had so much personality to him, and 11 was the one who fought, and he was so bombastic and threw himself into the role, Capaldi just didn't have his... role. Then 12 came in. And it became clear. He wasn't 10, he didn't run away. He wasn't 11, for he didn't fight. He was 12, the Man who Stops the Monsters. Words and cunning were his weapons. 11 relied on his companions, they were his strength, and for that I loved him. 12 was his own strength. And I respected him for it.

Rule 1: The Doctor Lies. If this is true, then rule 1 itself doesn't have to be true. If it's not true, then it's not rule number 1. But if it isn't true, then that technically makes it true, since it's a lie and the Doctor lies. Timey-wimey, rulesy-wulesy. Don't overthink the things that don't actually matter, especially the rule number 1s of each version of the Doctor, namely the main Doctor and all of his surrogates, like Clara. There is no consistency because there doesn't have to be.

Chills. This is the essence of The Doctor. He'll give his enemies several chances to turn away from their evil actions, and when they mistake his mercy for weakness, he goes scorched earth. At first he was concerned how safe his method for sending them home was, but they pushed their luck and now he only cares that enough survive to deliver his warning.

'And I name you the boneless' - that seems like a reference to the Tenth Doctor, during the episode with Martha Jones 'the Shakespeare Code'. @@TheAnakinchosen1 I honestly feel this comment so much -_- jodie is a wonderful actress who could've been a fantastic doctor if the writing had been better. With Chibnall it almost felt like he was trying to turn the show completely on it's head by challenging almost every aspect of the Doctor's character. Take for instance that little "moment" with Graham. *Spoilers* I feel like the Doctor would understand the implications of a ravaging disease and the fear that accompanies that, such as Graham with his fear of getting cancer again. Instead, we get a severely socially awkward moment where she stumbles around the topic to almost avoid it. It didnt feel right, especially for someone you consider your "fam". It was a disappointing reaction from someone who's supposed to be your friend. TL/DR: Chibnall's writing was lacking and Jodie/13 deserved. So. Much. Better.

"You are monsters!" I want everyone to rewatch this portion of the video. Could you ever imagine Matt Smith delivering this line the same way Capaldi does? Could you imagine even David Tenant being just as chilling?...this is what went wrong for Jodie Whittaker. Nothing was written for her to be "the doctor", to make it her own.

I think, that was the moment he truly remembered who he was. I think that when he didn’t die as Eleven, he didn’t know what to do, and forgot who he was, and listening to Clara play the role of The Doctor, reminded him. Maybe not fully, but he started to remember who The Doctor was, and what he stood for. But that just my opinion.

To be fair, Time Lords in general seem to have a "high on regeneration energy" issue, and since Twelve is the _first life_ of a particularly explosively-started new regeneration cycle, it only makes sense he'd take longer to "reboot" and remember his purpose...

Every time the Doctor regenerates, it takes time to adjust to the new actor, the new personality etc. and it took me a while to warm up to Capaldi. The darker undertone was much different the Doctor’s usual excitable and adventurous attitude. But this scene right here is what finally did it for me. His performance here cleared away any doubt in my mind that this man was the Doctor. The speech here was brilliantly delivered and, in my eyes, this was the first time that 12 had to really put his foot down to say “I’m the Doctor, you can’t stop me.” He quickly rose in my ranks to become my absolute favorite Doctor. Tom Baker was my favorite for a long time because his Doctor always seemed to have a positive attitude to even make bad news hilarious. Also jelly babies. But in my opinion, by the end of his run, Peter Capaldi’s Doctor epitomized all of the aspects that believe are core values of the Doctor. But I could probably write several pages on that topic 😉

Every actor that ever played the role has had ropey scripts and crappy stories. But every actor has had the chance to shine. He had better, and bigger speeches, but this is when Capaldi became the Doctor, and absolutely owned the role.

I think the amazing entrance is partly the tardis. She’s angry that the boneless leached her dimensional energy, trapped her thief inside and nearly got them both crushed by a train. Tardis isn’t used to being the target of the enemy attack herself, usually it’s just the doctor being attacked.

"I tried to talk, I want you to remember that. I tried to reach out. I tried to understand you..." That's so beautiful and kinda heartbreaking at the same time. How hard he tried to be good and then has to see once more that sometimes you just can't be. Because it's not the right thing to do, because it doesn't help sometimes. How sad he is because of that, how disappointed. And how strong and determined right afterwards. I love it. If I would have to name one scene to show others why 12 is my favourite Doctor it would be this one right here.

There are occasional episodes that remind us why the Doctor should never travel alone. This is one of them. The various companions (Clara here) are always important, especially when they're on the same page. Clara's line was that she was born to save the Doctor; she just happens to do it more often. And she makes an adorable Doctor; temporary, of course.

This was the moment that sealed it for me. Peter, to me was always a controversial choice for me. But to see the fearlessness in his eye after he appears outside of the TARDIS after it leaves siege mode, this was his "finest hour" in my eyes. It was in this moment that you see the continuation of his greatest and most feared title... "The Oncoming Storm", for he does not stop...even for the "drums"...

What's so great about the Doctor. If you come to Earth with nefarious intentions, if possible he will try to help you first of all, regardless of who you are or where you came from. But if you cross him, if you are determined to play the monster, he will take you down. In short, the Doctor is the best friend/ally in the universe. But also the worst enemy.
