Callanish The Minor Sites, Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides, Scotland.
The Callanish Standing Stones are known globally and are one of the most recognised Megalithic sites in the UK. This short documentary by ‘Before Caledonia’ looks at the minor or satellite stone circles in the Callanish Prehistoric Complex which are not as well known. In this short film we will see Callanish II, Callanish III, Callanish IV, Clitier Standing Stones and Achmore Stone Circle. These sites were erected in the Neolithic era circa 3000BC.
Before Caledonia focuses on the vast sites of Scotland’s rich prehistory and Megalithic culture. Before Caledonia can also be found on Facebook.

Thank you so much for making this video about the "other" Callanish sites. It has been a long while since I was there, but I still love them all. Thanks for the memories!

A very informative video thank you....I first visited the Callanish complex in 1998 and was blown away by the numbers of stone circles and the alignments, especially with the 18.6 year cycle of the Moon around the Earth.

That's amazing lichen coverage on the stone at about 9:30 - I'd thought Lewis was too windy for that, it looks more like what you find in forested areas. Speaks of very clean air, I think. Do you know if there is likely to be more hidden under peat at these sites, and if anyone has a mind to doing more peat clearance?

Hi Sibylle, I am sure there will be more stones to be found under the peat at the Callanish complex. Who knows what will be found and what better understanding they will have of Callanish in 50 or 100 years plus in the future.

Sometimes the wind comes at you in hurricane forces...have you ever seen the trees on Lewis!!...they are all bent showing the direction force and frequency of the wind...in the past when I was young, I used to walk up our road going from peat stack to peat stack as you would be sheltered by the stacks and only had to dash the few feet between them...

An excellent documentary, with an informative commentary. It was lovely to see all the sites again, that I visited some years ago, especially the Sleeping Beauty mountain from Achmore circle. The only bit that didn't ring true was the interpretation of Callanish III with maiden, mother and crone symbolism. The 'triple m, m & c goddess' was an invention of Robert Graves, which post-dated the megalithic sites by about 4500 years! Other than that, a lovely video clip.

Thanking you kindly Cheryl. I think it's possible the four inner stones may have been a later addition to the circle and they are similar to the four Standing Stones at Machrie Moor on the Isle of Arran. The Tripple Goddess arrangement might not be correct but I try my best. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment, Martin.

I would love to visit there one day but I have two questions, no actually three: How to get there, Is there a ferry or do I need to buy a ticket on a plane? Is it expensive to get there from Scotland and if so then what is the cheapest way to get there in Lewis? I am not an American but retired European interested of history and honouring the nature, Seeking the peace in there😍. Question number three: Can I wild camp there?

I read somewhere that said the Callanish stones were lined up with the Clisham on Harris. Is it Callanish I or one of the other circles??
