Thankyou for this wonderful guide. We have explored cup and ring marks in our home county of Northumberland, and visited some fascinating ancient sites in Wales. We are planning a trip through this part of Scotland and are excited to find some sites that you mention are close to our route.

Once again, thank you for the memories! I have done this trip but it was over 20 years ago! I had a wonderful time in Dumfries and Galloway and visited all of these sites. I need to plan another trip! (I just spent a fantastic 3 days in Aberdeenshire, so maybe next year!)

Another great site: Slewcairn, just to the West of Criffel. There are 2 cairns, one still quite prominent, as well as an unchambered long cairn, apparently one of the best examples in existence. There is also a very clearly visible hut circle, you can even see where the doorway was. It's just sitting out there in the woods. Quite incredible.

@@BeforeCaledonia It's not as well known as many of the others. There's some good info on Canmore about it. It's about a 5 mile walk down a forestry road so I don't think it gets as much traffic. The documentary was great - really good to hear your thoughts on our local sites.

Droughduil is about 5 minutes walk from my house. I live (or used to) just over the new A75, on the old A75, reputed to be a Roman Road (no proof however). Standing on the mound you would be able to see my house but for the pine trees in the village, by the little train station. I had to move away last year for work, so thanks for a little reminder of home. I still own my house there, my mother now rents it from me. So I'll be back up at Christmas time. Great to see Torhouseekie stone circle on the video. It's a fabulous stone circle. Robert John Langdon in his book "The Stonehenge enigma" has it that Silbury Hill was once located in an inland waterway (as was Stonehenge) and thus performed the function of a fire beacon in front of a landing area. If you go back 4 thousand years or so, the valley in front of Challoch Hill next to Dunragit was also a wetland area, presumably with the henge monument located at it's shore (it's actually under the new A75 in front of Myrtle Cottage). The Piltanton Burn being the shrunken remains of the watercourse. Therefore Droughduil was also probably a fire beacon, like Silbury Hill. Really good vid!

Hi Alex, I am glad you enjoyed my Dumfries & Galloway film. The Droughduil Mound is situated at one of the most important Neolithic sites in Scotland. I love Torhouse stone circle, it's not often you come across a ring with no stone missing. You can find a link to a presentation I done recently on the Dumfries & Galloway sites at the top of the comments section. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment, Martin.

Nice to see this, as these are sites I am not likely to be able to visit. I explained to my friend that yes, he is indeed speaking English! I always love to listen to the Scots accent even if I don't always understand. I do wish someone would correct the closed captions as they are full of errors. Very nice documentary!

@Dan Probin Maybe at least one of your children will be like me and love it… and have ancient sites transform their thinking and their life's path? I was 8 or younger when I got the "archaeology bug" for life. A lasting source of pleasure and interest.

Living in Dumfries as a teenager in the 1960's I visited the 12 apostles, as a kid I found it pretty unimpressive.

Hi Bob! The Twelve Apostles is probably not one of my favourite stone circles either. It is the largest ring in Scotland and with quite a few stones missing the circle seems quite sparse. I hope you enjoyed the documentary.
