The reason Hendrix's version of this got 140+ million views is that it was an antiwar song done by one who had been in the military. I've been on the watchtower; it's a spooky, scary place. The military isn't what Hendrix (or me, for that matter) thought it was. You end up staring your own ghost in the face. Nearly every guitar player who does this doesn't get it, they think "Hendrix was a great guitar player, I'm a great guitar player, Look! See all these great techniques?" So they play too fast. The subject matter of the song requires a slower pace. You're not in combat yet; you're waiting for it. It sounds to me like Laurence got the right idea when he first started tackling this, and then the roar of the crowd got to him and he forgot what the song was all about. I stared reaching for the downthumb when he broke into "Stairway to Heaven" but decided not to. I think a lot of non-guitarists know what I'm talking about, they are listening to the subject matter of the song and the guitar player is showing off.

Heard him play at the Wieniedome. So tempting, when yuppie guitarists attain a bit of skill, and attitude, add the proper facial grimaces, to think they can add to a classic.
