Brings back many memories for myself. My first car was a 66, Chrysler, 300, 440 with 727, and sure grip. It had the optional Police Pursuit Motor, and 30K miles on the odometer, in 1983. The car, running on pump gas, broke rubber shifting into every gear, beat most stock pony cars 0-60 but then had the dreaded aerodynamic issue of driving a very wide and heavy cinder block down the road. But, bury the speedometer, it did..... I miss being a fearless 16 year old kid with nothing better to do than drive and tinker with backyard auto mechanics.

@@mrdiplomat9018 All I can tell you is what my Dad's mechanic, (my Dad owned auto repair shops from 1955 thru 1994), who serviced the car told me. He helped the original owner choose mechanical features, when he ordered the car. It also had a tach, dual exhaust, and he ordered it without A/C. The old guy who bought it retired from the financial industry and wanted a car he and his wife could take a few cross country trips: his last car. The saddest part is he traded in a 300J for the 66. I wish I still had it and kept it stock..... But, that's part of being a teen in the 80's: ripped out the reverb unit and single rear speaker for 6x9's and a cassette deck with graphic equalizer, tossed the original hub caps (big mistake those are worth a fortune now) for a set of mags.... And, like a dumby, tossed the fender skirts! Also found out the hard way about Chrysler reverse threads!!! and, of course, replaced the exhaust with cherry bombs. All that stupid stuff. Just butchered that car.

@Dartgame 340 ur spot on. N those days, there was a speedometer cable with a gear that mounted into the side of the trans that was synced to the running gears. I bought a new '68 Impla Sport Coup and got a ticket for 100 n 55 (woulda been a lot more but I lifted due to spitting back thru carb/cutting out). I went to Chevy parts Dept and told a buddy i needed a speedi gear that'd throw the speedometer off by 25 mph. He gave me one for a Chevy dump truck---I installed the gear, had it calibrated, and wahlah---it threw my speedometer off 24 mph at 100.....i was screwed by 1 mph (I needed to get speedometer down to 75 to avoid reckless driving/automatic loss of license).

I also in the 70's had a burgundy 1968 coronet rt 440, 4 speed, 410 rear sure grip rear end! With black interior and a black tail stripe,with 4 ss cragars on goodyear tires! The car would hook up everytime? The best i ran in the 1/4 mile, not now nothing was 11.98 , but usally i was in the high 12,s 13.i still miss that car to this day! It got restore and now lives in canada

that would be awesome. but the the speedo doesnt match the rear-end. so coincidentally you can read the numbers more like km/h.
@jameswood678

*So just a view of an inaccurate speedometer due to the fact that the rear gear has likely been changed? No real report on what the actual top speed was?*
@rustonwheels3064
@rustonwheels3064 2 жыл бұрын
usually the car passes the line with 195 km/h. you are right on wrong speedometer. it is of no priority in this car.

Those pre '72 440 4V stock Mopars were plenty awesome. Had a 71 Dodge Polara with the "Pursuit" package. What a beast.

There was no “Pursuit” package for the 71 Polara. It had an option for a 440 cid but no pursuit package.

@@melrose9252 Mel: Thanks for the input. I bought the car used in '72. Maybe you can clarify a point or two. The car had heavy duty everything. My befuddled old man brain seems to recall a "Police/Taxi" package. Does that sound right?

The car has a 440ci V8 fitted, but the Coronet 440 is the Model name and most of these cars wete fitted with a 318 v8. Not thay it really matters all American V8s sound fantastic with a good exhaust. 😎

Those old speedometers are hilarious! does anyone know if there's any modern upgrades that can be done to them to make them read smooth and accurate?
@gavinmclaren9416
@gavinmclaren9416 2 жыл бұрын
It just needs a new cable, maybe a drop of oil. Then it would be smooth. The pinion gear in the transmission also needs to be correct for the rear axle ratio and tire size.

Does it have an rpm limiter or is it floating the valves when it shifts? Difficult to accurately shift an auto trans with a column shifter, are you letting it shift itself? Either way that Torqueflight is shifting slow and probably needs the bands tightened some and a shift kit. If it shifts itself you can tune it to shift at the rpm you want within some limitations. That nice little hop that unloaded the rear tires will be less of an issue if you take the spring clamps off of the back half of the rear leaf springs. It looked like you are running Cal-traks or a similar traction device however many NHRA stock eliminator records were set with only spring clamps on the front of the leaf and none on the rear. Car looks and sounds great and brings back memories.
