Throttle House

Жыл бұрын

The 2004 Toyota Century (~$30,000 in Canada as specced, ~$22,000 in the US) is a V12 powered Japanese luxury limo. But whilst it may have some charm, its not exactly alone as a luxury big displacement barge. Thomas has brought along a 2005 Rolls-Royce Phantom (for sale at CAD$159,999) and a Maybach 57s (Value ~CAD$100,000) to show James what 2000s Luxury limos are really capable of. We hope you enjoy the episode! Thanks for watching! SUBSCRIBE!
Thanks to Amedeo DiCarlo, Criminal Defense Lawyer and his driver Mike for lending us the Maybach.
Thanks to Nawab Motors for letting us feature their daily driven Phantom!
And to James, for just being handsome and letting us borrow his one of a kind, creme da la creme Century. And for writing this description.

Two brothers would compete as they grew up to see who could swim the furthest into a Great Lake that spanned the horizon before getting to tired that one would have to give up and start to swim back as they ran out of strength. One day, the younger brother, who always lost to his older, stronger, brother, challenged him to one last contest. The older brother laughed in his face but accepted the challenge. As they got further and further into the seemingly endless horizon of water, the older brother, shocked, gave in and had to turn back. Back on shore, the dumbfounded older brother asked, panting with fatigue, “How did you finally beat me?” The younger brother smirked and said, “I never planned on turning back, my goal wasn’t to save strength for the return trip, I was committed to making it across the whole lake.” Century

@@ferdinandaddo9544 As much as I love the Honda J35Y1 engine and trust its capabilities, it can NOT compete against the headroom of the 1GZ-FE V12, because of its sheer displacement and cylinder count. You can tune the 1GZ-FE to the moon and back and it will smoke most fast cars out there without breaking. That J35Y1 will lose a good bit of its reliability on the other hand if you push it too far, because it is already being pushed quite a bit.

Rolls Royce was created to simply be the best at everything luxury...and in the early days of the automobile, quality - including bullet proof reliability and long term durability - was core to the company's DNA. But over the years, it seems that styling and luxurious materials have gotten a far higher priority. In the real world, Rolls Royce reliability after a few years on the road is absolutely horrific.

I find it admirable that the Century was released in 1997 and did not change anything to its design until 2017. In 1997 it still fell under the gentleman's agreement so power was lower than competitors and capped at a theoretical 276hp. While the Rolls and Maybach are both a product of the innovations of past 2000 and were not restricted by an agreement and thus have powerplants with way more power, but also way more weight. I'd love to own a Century one day.

In 1997, when the second generation "Century" was released, Japan was bound by the "280 horsepower regulation", and although it was equipped with a large displacement 5.0L V-type 12-cylinder engine, the maximum output was only 280 PS. If it had not been for this "280 horsepower regulation", it would have been no less than Rolls-Royce, Maybach, and Bentley.

Reminds me of racing my friend who had a 1972 Gran Prix with a 454, while I had a 1972 Cutlass with a 350-rocket. Off the line I blew him away, right up until you got to bout 45mph, where that 454 finally kicked in and would take off. If you don't know, a Grand Prix of that year was a giant coupe, while the Cutlass of that year was a midsized coupe.

The other three of us would race all the time, in particular my friend with the Chevelle. Everywhere we went was a Dukes of Hazard episode as we lived in a rural area with a lot of dirt roads.
