Well I’ve been listing power steering fluid , cleaned it up ( refill drips) so I could check the lines , checked everything so yesterday I felt a hop I guess best way to explain it and when it’s in 2wd it shouldn’t feel that so anyway I got down there and the tie rod is trashed plus its -Rack- is separating. It’s warm out side and I’m cheap so thank you for the info . This video has definitely helped , not to mention saved me quite a bit.. THANK YOU

Great video. Torque spec on the mounting bolts/nuts is 200 ft/lbs per the factory service annual for my 2003 D. Only way I can torque down the drivers side mounting bolt is by either removing the diff cover to get more clearance (which may be appealing for some if they haven't changed their front diff fluid in a while), or come at it from the front side. Put the socket & breaker bar on the head of the bolt (with the flag) and a box end on the nut. Tighten down the nut as much as you can but don't allow the flag to hit the frame. Use the torque wrench on the bolt head to finish it off. Again, don't allow the flag to hit the frame. The flag does not hold the bolt in place, the 200 ft/lbs of torque does. Hope that helps someone (since I know you sold this truck a while ago).

I just got done with this very thing.This helped as my original was leaking and wouldn't pass inspection. 17 years was enough I guess. 2002 Doesn't have rack mount bolt stops. Just needed socket with extension to go in from the front. Glad I purchased new steering lines as even with penetrating oil and heat they still twisted and broke. So glad I had a 16mm stubby for the pressure line from the pump. To get it off I just used a cutting wheel and then an 16mm socket at the pump connection as the old high pressure line was trash anyway. Rusty and tight. To get the old rack out I wrapped duct take on the steering connection and used pliers to rotate the rack completely to the left and it allowed the old rack to come out easier moving it to the right side and dropping more out the bottom . It's now a core who cares about alignment. It all fits in the box to go back. Feeding in from the right side still is the only way to get it in. Seeing the job beforehand made it easier. Thanks.

So the Dodge Durango service manual has an error. The return line at 6:58 that has squared turn goes into the top rack hole (as shown). The pressure line which is curved, goes into the bottom hole. Thanks for the video, I took photos of my job but this video helped confirm the error in the manual (4.7 2000 Durango). Can't believe yours didn't come with the bushings. Good time to add a magnetic inline filter on the return line.

Very nice instructions. With the price of the refurbished crap I just ordered a brand new rack for my 01 Dakota 2wd. It’s pathetic that they charge over 200 bucks for a remanned unit when brand new is the same off Amazon. This is why I tend to steer away from remanned parts. Alts ps components anything really that I can buy new I will.If it is refurbished I AM THE REFURBISHER. That way I know it’s truly refurbished.

Sure, but those amazon parts are likely chinese-built too, so way inferior to OEM still.
@kittyfanatic1980
@kittyfanatic1980 Жыл бұрын
@@zzz7zzz9 True but it’s not amazons fault per say. Amazon is simply a reseller like Walmart or autozone, Napa etc. a lot of OEM stuff is also made in china nowadays. And the rebuilders use plenty of Chinese parts in their so called “refurbishing” process. There are two chinas if you get the drift lol. I personally have never had any issues and have gone well over 100k. Plus a lot of dealerships will put in aftermarket parts when you get service. Just have to watch what you buy.

Great video, very helpful to see all the steps and what to do when you don't have every tool in the world at your disposal. Doing this on my wife's 07 Durango over this weekend, so this was a great find...its a different layout in that the rack is behind the axle instead of in front of it, but the overall process should be pretty similar. Thanks!

So 2 issues encountered thus far, maybe you guys will have a suggestion. Pinch bolt on the steering column just won't budge, currently soaking in penetrating oil. Can't get much more leverage than with a 3/8" ratchet but I might try to concoct a longer arm with a ujoint or two. Second issue, the ps fluid lines coming out of the rack are spinning the metal tubing with the bolt head...I might have to just replace them I suppose, or was thinking of pulling them off the ps cooler and pump so the whole tube can spin as I unscrew it, thoughts?

@timdoyle3028
@timdoyle3028 4 жыл бұрын
@@TonyTheTruckGuy , I did get it sorted out. The pinch bolt was a matter of just a) letting it soak long enough and b) getting it in just the right position that I could put some leverage on it, just had to remove a bit more stuff and turn the wheel some...I also initially was trying to just loosen it and not take the bolt out, but it was still threaded in...once I fully removed it, the pinch opened right up and popped off. Power steering lines I had to disconnect on the far end so I could spin the whole line to back them out, I opted to just replace them. Everything went back together easily, I had a steering wheel alignment problem that tripped the steering angle sensor to throw some warning lights, solved it by just popping the pinch off again and give it a 360 rotation and it took care of it all. Only thing is, now the pump is still making a moaning noise so I suspect the contamination in the old fluid and the few times the fluid levels went really low likely damaged the pump a well. Any thought s to check short of swapping it out? Thanks.
@TonyTheTruckGuy
@TonyTheTruckGuy 4 жыл бұрын
Dang a steering angle sensor on a Dakota? They sure got carried away lol. Unfortunately as far as the steering moaning, I think you’re right. Contaminants from the old rack probably got to the pump. Unfortunately there’s not much you can do now besides replace the pump or deal with the noise. Even if you did replace the pump, some of those contaminants are likely in the new rack and in the power steering cooler if you have one. You would basically need to replace all steering components that fluid goes through to completely remedy the issue.

The outer tie rods are bad and unfortunately, I had a hard time removing the outer tie rods from the inner. So, I already ordered a remanufactured Cardone rack & pinion. I had to use the breaker bar and the bottle floor Jack to loosen them Second, the hoses I had to replace them. They were rusted on good so why re use them? The fittings are 18MM. Now, no more leak, tie rods are solid. Only thing left is to go for alignment. But I'm really happy with the outcome.

We’re the o-rings ordered off of the VIN or by vehicle? Like are we sure they are correct o-rings and correct size? If so then I would double check that the line is tight. If it’s tight and still leaking, there may be a crack in the rack port or an issue with the line itself.

@TonyTheTruckGuy

Lol. Each stand was rated for double the weight of the truck basically and I had it resting pretty well. Most of the shaking and pulling and prying was between one part of the truck and another part of the truck, rather than between the floor and the truck, which would have cause more of an issue. I typically leave the jack in place as a back-up, but it would have been in the way here.

By any chance do you have the part numbers for the bolt and nuts for the 15/16" nuts that you removed at 4:09 mark??? The websites all say they are discontinued. I just lost a nut to my passenger side mount and due to the angle inside the frame, I can't pull the bolt out to bring it with me. You also showed a "Flag Nut". For some reason, I found mine inside the frame. Do you know where I can get that? Also at the 5:52 mark and the 24:13 mark there appears to be some sort of 'washered nut'...do you know that part number or any equivalent spec like threads, length, etc.???

***THIS IS NOT THE SAME AS THE 2000 DURANGO*** Pulling the rack out was impossible without removing the sway bar completely, which was a job itself. The differential cover has a vent hose that is in the way you need to remove as well. The only way for the rack to be removed is by dropping the sway bar and pulling the rack out the passenger side. Also I would advise using the 18 mm and 19mm flare nut wrench on the powersteering lines. Napa should have some standalone ones in stock.

My Dodge Dakota acts weird when corning. The return to center seems to stop working for just a second. If I'm stopped and turn the wheel to a certain point the return too center goes dead and then grabs again over and over causing the wheel to oscillate back and forth if I try to hold that position.

I think I know what you’re talking about I’ve experienced it a feel times where it almost feels like a dead spot in the wheel where it kinda hangs up mid turn and then oscillates a bit like you say. Unfortunately I can’t remember if it’s the steering pump itself that causes this or the rack and pinion. I would guess pump because it seems like a flow issue.
@frankh.3849
@frankh.3849 2 жыл бұрын
@@TonyTheTruckGuy I'm thinking it's the pump also. I stuck my head out the window and heard the hydraulic pressure rising and falling in rhythm with the oscillation. Gonna try some of that transmission seafoam

Hi! Thanks for make this video. Why you replace the rack pinion? I have a Dakota 2002 sport 4x4 and mine makes a noise like one of the push rod are bad. I replace everything A arm buchings, ball joins, push rods, shocks and sway bar bushings and the steering keep doing the same thing. I check the steering shaft and doesn't have play. Today testing the new front brakes, after a hard brake the steering wheel are not center going in a straight line. Do you had those same problems? Thanks!
@TonyTheTruckGuy
@TonyTheTruckGuy 5 жыл бұрын
I replaced mine because it was slowly leaking fluid out of the rubber boots where the “inner tie rod end” is. I believe one of my inner toe rod ends was also bad. If you have an issue with the brakes pulling one way or another, you might want to make sure the piston on your caliper isn’t seized. My left front caliper started locking up on me on the way to a camping trip and I limped it the rest of the way then changed both front calipers, pads, and rotors.

I dont know if you can help me with a huge problem, need to find the steering knuckle from driver side. This parts is completely discontinued. Do you know where or what junker have this part available? My truck have one of the knuckle thread damage on one of the caliper guide shaft mount and someone put heli coil to install this part back. Thanks!

Wouldn't this be the same for 2005 4Wd 4.7L V8 ? I ask because I have the Chitlin 02-08 & the procedure only seems to differ for the Diesel? (Genuine question, I'm gearing up to do this myself. ) Really appreciate this video brother. Thanks

I’m honestly not sure, I’ve never worked on an 05+ Dakota. I’m guessing the steps are very similar though. Maybe slightly different size sockets, etc but should be very close steps.

Tony The Truck Guy Update: Just finished installing my new rack & pinion/steering gear on 2005 Dodge Dakota while using your video & a Chilton as reference. It was essentially the same thing to the T. The only notable difference was my pressure/return lines were facing the passenger side so I couldn’t reach them through the drivers side wheel well. Had to loosen mounting bolts to get at the valves. Thank you very much for this video! I could not have done it with out you. All the best!

Shouldn’t be anywhere near the transfer case haha. I’m guessing you mean the front differential. Idk I just kinda snuck it out the passenger side like you see at 11:20 haha, you might have to rotate it and pull and kinda keep working it around but if didn’t give me too much hassle. You did get everything else disconnected right? Removing the ends MIGHT help, but it all depends on what you’re hitting. As you can see my tie rods never really gave me trouble coming out

ya i meant front diff. i cant find the correct orientation to rotate it out, just gets jammed. i wasnt able to get the pressure hose nut out, rounded off, so i ended up cutting it at the nut and just replaced the hose. but thats it. i guess ill just keep getting my ass kicked tomorrow.

Different engine but same concept. Just different filter number and oil grade probably. Also, the 3.6 oil filter is not under the engine, it's on top under a plastic cap. And the filter is just a paper one that clips into the cap, which screws on and off. Watch this video - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ocWRYJCElt20c58.html

I really hope that’s not power steering fluid you used on those bushings for bushings, power steering is corrosive to bushings, hence they don’t use rubber o rings for the rack and pinion
