Hey Good People,
I had a customer bring his Dodge Durango equipped with the 3.6 Pentastar in the shop with overheating problems. He told me that he had the head gaskets replaced by a previous mechanic but the vehicle is still overheating.
In this video, I go through my normal diagnostic procedures and discover the truth.
Comment your 2 cents below, I love to hear from you guys.
Any tool you see me use in any of my videos can be. found at my Amazon storefront:

I've never understood how someone purporting to be a mechanic can scam a customer like that. Of course that's what contributes to the image of all mechanics being cheaters/scammers. I'm a relatively new view of your channel. I'm a former tech/mechanic, from many years ago. I've come to your channel attracted by your professionalism. Everyone should be so lucky to find a tech/mechanic like you in their area. Thanks for a good video.

The dealer should have to give the guy a brand NEW engine for the BS work they did and lying saying they machined and replaced the head gasket. Their lying could cost the guy his engine so it should be replaced by them and brand new, not rebuilt.

I have the same vehicle and a mechanic told me I needed to replace the head gasket. My car had a misfire on cylinder 4. I asked them if they preform a pressure test and they didn’t. I talked with a manager after that. Long story short, it was the coil pack for cylinder 4 that was bad. $180 to replace instead of thousands of dollars they were initially trying to charge me

I had one of these same Durango’s when they first came out. I got the hemi v8. Bought it brand new. Was a beautiful car but it was horrible in quality control. Several times the car wouldn’t start. Also pieces like the mirror caps kept deforming from the suns heat. Doors not aligned properly. Tow mode wouldn’t work right. Other things too which I cannot remember right now. I got so tired of it being at the dealer that I ended up trading it for a Honda. 10 years later I still have that Honda. It’s never been in the shop for anything other than normal maintenance and a few recalls. I will never buy another Stellantis product. Their cars look sexy on the outside but the actual workings are crap.

Good call on engine replacement. Not worth opening it up. Not cost effective to repair. Even if the heads aren't cracked (Lots of those on a 3.6) sending them to a machine shop could create other issues. If they are warped which is most likely the case then milling them flat again would move the cams closer to the crank. Depending on how much is machined off you open yourself up to possible cam/crank correlation faults. In my experience I do not recommend machining heads on today's modern VVT engines. These engines are just to timing sensitive to risk having all your hard work ruined by a check engine light that will never go out.
