Come along with Eric O. at the SMA repair shop as he swaps out the 3.8 liter engine in this high mileage 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan that has a P0303 Misfire and has started to burn coolant. I am going to break this up in a multi part series to help keep the videos shorter.

I've learned so much from watching these. Tools I did not even know existed! I have a thing that might help someone else trying to do a motor swap. This is probably not something that works with everything. But on my A343f transmission in my Land Cruiser I made the hardest bolt to get to on the bell housing ( up at the back behind the heads ) my alignment friend. I took a matching bell housing bolt cut the end off it and cut a slot in it that I could fit a screw driver in to. When I have had the motor out I put that stud in first. Then I slide the motor back on to the transmission using it to align the two. Got to be real careful and gentle not to bend it. Then when it is all done and the motor and transmission are bolted up and aligned I can get a screw driver in and back that stud out and replace it with a bolt. Can't recall where I got this idea from but has worked like a charm twice now.

On the PLUS side you are truly keeping hope alive for a Dodge van owner. On the DOWN side, Chrysler never intended this vehicle to be on the road this long. Effectively you are fighting the entire engineering resources of a multi-billion dollar company and their planned obsolescence design strategy. As a customer, I attempted to do the same thing for many, many years before I finally saw the light so I feel everybody's pain.

I cannot tell you how much I've learned from watching your vids, especially the engine swap series. The way you approach and troubleshoot the unexpected problems is actually a learning experience and encouraging in that I often employ similar techniques. And know what? The way you do videos makes me feel that I'm right there struggling with you. And Mrs. O, or Hannah occasionally showing up adds a lot. Gives character. Thanks. Great work!

You are a lucky man, I’ve never actually made a living as a mechanic, but, I do have 45 years of experience doing my own cars. You have daughters that will jump in and help the old man. Hannah is like my youngest daughter. She’ll be there helping her old man till the job is done. She knows the names of those tools, extensions and hammers. Big help to have someone hand you a wrench work the cherry picker. BTW, the only way to bring a bell housing to the transmission, is using the bolts on an old ford truck. Tolerance is too tight to stab it. God bless your family

20:19 On those caravan engines some ahole at Dodge decided the use M6 bolts to hold the water pump on. I've had those dam things break off in the aluminum and they are impossible to get out due to them being so small. I use stainless m6 bolts when replacing the water pump to make sure they come out on the next change out.

One of the first major repairs I did was replacing the subframe on my 99 ford Taurus when I was 20 years old. (After I slid into a curb in snowy michigan HARD) I used my dads shop, but did most of the work myself. The replacement sub-frame my dad picked up from a junk yard - upon close inspection it had a huge forklift gash and bend in the side of it - fortunately they found another one that wasn't damaged. Junk yard clowns is the correct description!

I can fully understand where Eric is worried about the sub frame bolts, I had one spin on my 2002 Caravan, put the control arm repair behind 2 days, sourcing salvaged replacement bolts, rubber bushings, and frame nuts. I can also understand where Eric is coming from about swapping in a low mileage engine, that is if course you can source one in your area; otherwise it would be best to do a head gasket job. Do note however; if your going to remove your heads, it would also be wise to do the timing chain and I also do the main bearings, connecting rod bearings as well, new oil pump kit, pull pistons and piston rings, do a quick hone job, and other work while doing the head gasket job. The point is to make the engine last as long as humanly possible, minimizing risk of other such failures internally. I just did work on a 1994 Plymouth Grand Voyager myself, saving shop labor, and the total parts costs came in at just over $800.00. Purchased a "core" engine, swapped over good heads and pistons\connecting rods for $80.00. Essentially when all said and done, every part of the original engine block was "refreshed" as much as possible. That is of course, it still is possible for a major failure later down the road, but when you need wheels; sometimes you have to gamble, and do the best job that you can do. Especially when the engine has 416,000 + miles on it!!

I was going to ask you if you ever put a motor replacement,then had to pull it back out because it was a bad motor. What kind of warrenty do you give on Engine swaps? I have never had a bad engine swap but did replace all the gaskets and seals because its easier to do it out of the car than in. Back in the 70's I did my AMC Matador,the jeep motor I replaced it with was a great motor,came from a roll over. I had to replace the oil pan on that too because the dummy that shipped it didnt have it secured on the trailer and it rolled over and smashed the corner of the pan,causing it to leak. At that point we decided to get a gasket kit and replaced them all. I had to get a different oil pan also. Sadly the one from the old motor wouldnt fit because I went to a different sized motor,everything went together like a glove though. It was my first ever engine swap. No two engine swaps are ever alike I found out. Like you said,always check the flywheel. They even swap them mid year sometimes,I found out. My Subaru Forester had 5 different engine types that year,scary. I dont care for that idea.

i finished one these today on an 04. Looks kinda like some of the accessory drives are a little different between your 08 the 04 I had. Used floor caster with sandbags on em then lowered the engine plus trans on em, unbolted the upper mounts then I could roll forward (removed the fans) and back to clear exhaust as the body went up. Worked well both ways (on and off). Fun stuff these Caravans... p.s. a mechanci guy that stopped today says, "huh, most people probably would've scrapped the car" Me, "ya dunno the old one had a pretty bad knock, hopefully this new?used doesn't" Business owner, "Customer has family attachment with the vehicle, reason for not scrapping". Anyway I guess these caravans bring a good following forr some. Rant over

What I learned today: If I ever lose my mind and decide to swap an engine myself, and a donor engine is available still in another vehicle, I'll take the engine out of the donor myself. I've found most of the guys that dismantle equipment or prep for remodeling have an attitude of "Don't care if it costs the next guy hours to fix the damage, my way saved me 2 minutes."

I'm in the middle of this series on Thanksgiving day 2018 after working on my V-8 Ranger project for most of the day. I'm just wondering if an engine tilter/leveler would have let you remove and install the engine without having to tear everything off the front of it. I bought my leveler at the same time as my new 2ton cherry picker. My old 2ton crane had a bad cylinder and it would've cost almost as much to fix as it did to buy a new one (the new one also "folds" so it doesn't take near as much space). Anyway, I bought my crane and leveler on sale from NAPA. They're both still on sale. The crane is $200 and the leveler is $35. Obviously they're "off shore" made, but, what isn't these days? I know there's a big difference between a Caravan and my Ranger, however, the leveler allowed me to pull the 4 cylinder engine and 5 speed (Mazda) transmission out of my Ranger as a complete assembly this morning without removing anything other than the hood and radiator.

I usually will not say something, its not my place to do so. In the old days you could take an engine from the top its been done 100x , but I think it would have been so much easier just to drop it from below, the old days the caravan had a k frame and it was a pain to drop it, but you only basically had that bar w/ 6 bolts. Wow just too much work. I did love your engine swap on the Chevy and it was the best 4 plus hours I spent.

@operator0 4 жыл бұрын
He didn't drop it form the bottom because he was certain all the subframe bolts would have been frozen and would have broke off inside the subframe, causing him to spend more time than if he were to take it out of the top. I would have taken it out of the bottom, but I live in the South East where we don't have to deal with the salt corrosion unless we're dealing with a Yankee mobile.

Wow maldonadok5, you've never been a mechanic have you! Fixing one thing often causes another to fail, putting in a stronger engine places more stress on the transmission and the rest of the drive train. Repairing systems with a lot of wear is ALWAYS a crap shoot. This is particularly true in mechanically hostile environments, like New York for example.
