A look at the 2010 Dodge Viper ACR's production-car, lap record lap of 7:12.13 at the world-famous 12.9-mile Nurburgring Nordschleife track in Germany, Sept. 14, 2011. Veteran GT driver Dominik Farnbacher was at the wheel for the lap, which beat the previous record by two seconds.

I watched this video so many times and still cant get over how fast this car went such a long time ago. Huge props to Dodge and Farnbacher.

We were there on Sept 12th (2011) for this historic event and were lucky to turn a few laps with our new 335d the day prior. We were staying at the Am Tiergarten and the sound of these three vipers turning laps shook us out of our beds. Also, Ron Howard was up at the Ring on the 12th to start production of his new F1 film: Rush. Pretty cool!

Yeah it's pretty awesome...I find having the window open a crack helps immensely with hearing the tires and "feeling" out how the car is responding etc.

Awesome! Green ACR @ 4:36 and bug splat @ 4:56. Smooth driving. Was in (Targa) Newfoundland on Sept 12 with Ralph Gilles where he mentioned to me they were one second away from breaking the record. Kudos for getting it done!!

After re watching this again the thing about this viper ACR is that it will go faster that you think it will, so like on this track, the driver hangs it out, but there's a few times where the Vipers saying "is that all u got? I can make this turn if your brave\stupid enough to let me do it". the thing is a beast and one of the best raw drives on video. bravo.

Did having the driver's window part way down affect the performance at all? It would seem intuitive to keep wind resistance to a minimum. Great video!

This car actually had a top end at 200 MPH where as the new 2016 Mega viper does only 177. That's a huge advantage, but it has 2000 pounds of downforce and a perfectly balanced car. I think a good driver, which they have in Dominick, he's won many hybrid races and knows Nuremberg like the back of his hand.He didn't even get any dry lap time, he had never driven the car, and pulled off a 7:03.

Yet people constantly tell me "Vipers can only go fast straight, they can't turn at all" if they ever start talking about sports cars, people don't seem to understand that the thing was a fucking beast on the track, people over at SRT had one of their engineers drive the gen 5 ACR and they set 13 track records, dude was never a race driver

I did notice that the GT-R and LFA laps use the same (end of fence to beginning of fence) timing markers, but the FXX seems to start and stop using the ending fence timer.

@Litanic What are you talking about? The ACR has a radio and everything else the normal SRT-10 has. Though the ACR-X does not. You cannot take a Radical and drive to the store and back, the first speed bump will leave you high centered. The Gumpert can however, the Appollo hasn't been produced enough to be called a production car to my understanding.

@v10pwrrrr What was done to lighten the ACR-X 120 lbs in spite of the roll cage? Thats quite a bit of weight to shed over the already lightened ACR. Do you know what tires were used by chance? Thanks.

I didn't even know this thing made 1300lbs of downforce. I knew it made over 1000 but god damn! The revised wing which bumped the top speed up from 176 to 184 I guess produces that much more when the car is maxed out down the straight away.

@djeminescu According to the news, the tyres were standard Michelin Pilot Sport Cup :) Worth noticing is that racing version ACR-X were only 10s faster than "normal" ACR.

@13tomabram I've never heard of a Viper breaking down, I know a few using them as daily drivers with no problems at all. You can hold onto that if you like though.

Also true! A nice breeze while driving! ACR's do actually have A/C however, unless you opt for the "Hardcore Package", which this in all likelyhood is.

Maybe someone can help me here. How is it that the ACR-X was 10 seconds faster than the ACR? From what I found it only has 40 more HP from the cats being deleted and it gained race seats plus a roll cage (no cats and cage making it illegal for street use). What tires were used? Does the cage give it better rigidity as well for better time? Race fuel? All the above? Inquiring minds wanna know because that's a huge difference in time.

uhmm...did anyone happen to notice that the timer starts at the end of the blue fence, but is tripped as done at the beginning of the fence some 3 seconds before the lap is completed?

So when is the 2013 with track pack hitting The Nurburgring? I hear that one is 1 second per mile of track faster then the previous Viper.

@iPROFITDON Actually I was assuming it was the ACR with the hardcore package since the radio was missing from this video. Though I'm not sure which version they were using here. The Apollo IS being produced sufficiently to be called a production car according to some standards. But because of the low overal production numbers people still raise an eyebrow there. Maybe this also counts: It is possible to buy a more streetable version of the ACR (base SRT10), but not of the Apollo.

Can someone tell me what happened at 8:34? It looks like the gear stick vibrates like crazy - is it just that he hits the ideal RPM for a shift and the car shakes that much on the straight at full speed?

Looks like he's pushing the clutch at that very moment. Maybe too weak transmission/engine mounts- after all by engaging clutch he's going from full load to no load on drivetrain.

at 8:34, he hits fuel cutoff in 4th gear, and the engine computer starts to cut out fuel (to warn the driver, so he does not destroy the engine by mistake), and Dom quickly realized what was happening and upshifted to 5th to keep rolling to a then-record lap. The shifter shakes only because the engine computer is purposefully cutting the fuel out to warn the driver that they have exceeded redline. It is pretty violent and apparent to the driver when this is happening so a quick response is easy!

@glitchysoft You are right, I carelessly made that open-wheel statement. However with true consumer cars I didn't mean just non-open wheeled, but also in terms of production numbers and thus buyer-friendliness. The ACR is a lot more on friendly terms since it at least features a roof and is more available to public. Also if it's too 'radical', you still have the option to switch to the SRT-10.

Kinda curious - whats the third viper for? I know there is the ACR record setter that we watch here, and one of the others is the ACR-X they also brought along, but what about that third one?

@thybigballs Ah my apologies- I didnt know you were talking about the Venom GT- Hennessey also makes a venom version of the Viper- Being this is a viper-based video, I assumed thats what you were speaking of.

@LiamE69 Minor detail: The ACR did the same run on aug-2008, exactly 1 year before Gumpert's first run with an (back then) astonishing time of 7:22.1. Also I wouldn't compare open-wheel vehicles (the Radicals and Donkervoorts) to true consumer vehicles.

@mrbigtian GTR was 12 seconds back. That's a tad more than a 1/4 mile on a drag strip. If both cars were in a 24 hour race the GTR would be what is commonly known as lap traffic several times over.

@PrimiusLovin (pt3) The gtr is an utterly -brilliant- piece of technology, but of little surprise it is an extremely complicated piece of machinery. The viper for comparison (since i know them inside/out) is just a "raw" machine, and is extremely simple to work on and maintain. The labor-differences between these two vehicles is strongly apparent in the price-differences of maintaining both these vehicles.

@PrimiusLovin (pt2) On top of this the car requires a regular 18000 mile service thatll run around 1500 bucks (which is basically a drive-train fluid change), not counting the other inbetween services it requires. In reality the Gtr is one of the most expensive cars to own/maintain- especially compared to the viper (Im a technician with Dc-Performance, look us up- We specialize in the maintenance and modification of 1st-4th gen vipers, but ive the (dis)pleasure of working on Gtrs as well).

@rforracing Yes I am aware, the ACR doesn't even have a radio or carpet while the Gumpert does. People are deciding on their own wether a car is considered a production car or not. Technically the Radical's are production cars too, but not many people want to run on 100+ octane or do an engine-rebuild every 30 hour. There's no official line or regulation, just opinions and that's what we have to deal with unfortunately.

@Danutzz2010 Can you qualify what you mean by saying the ACR is "a super super super special edition"? The ACR has NO engine modifications, adjustable suspension, no radio, amp, speakers, trunk carpet or tire inflator (80lbs less). This Viper came off the showroom floor and was ran as is. This wasn't to beat the GTR's time. This was to beat everyone. And it only has 38 more HP over the LF-A. If you want a special car look at the ACR-X. According to Autoguide it supposedly did a lap time of 7:02.

WOW!! That was pretty intense, surely no room for mistakes as that would result in fatality... Adjusted front spoiler and the rear wing for better ground pressure, right? I'm a bit curious of how the Hennessey Venom would deal with the ring, it should be lighter and have a 1200 bhp tuned viper engine and weigh at least 8- 900 KG, i guess the Viper will be beaten when that happens =P

@rforracing Michelins have an excellent reputation in the U.S.. I do have to be honest about that. From my understanding, they are the only ones who's belts don't overlap at the ends but are physically woven or joined thus eliminating belt slippage or seperation. This is what I have been told anyways. I guess my best comeback reply is this: Oh yeah, well we make the best 4x4 tires. Super Swampers baby! So there! I know this means little here:)

@rforracing The Gumpert is not considered a proper streetable car since it's an extremely harsh and stiff ride. There's really no compromise for ride-comfort, almost just like the Radical. Imo it's kinda in the grey-zone since it does have a radio, gps and even a/c. However commonly it's not accepted as a proper streetcar.

@13tomabram Please by all means show me one breaking down during testing, and a coupe getting 4 out of 10, can't seem to find either :/. I don't recall ever seeing one break down from anything other than sheer abuse. Last car I saw break down in a test was that Porsche Turbo Motortrend was testing against the ZR1.

@thybigballs Yup I agree the Viper is certainly a mass production car unlike those that have posted faster times. Its a remarkable lap and worthy of praise. I just feel that claiming records it doesn't have detracts from its actual achievement which is nothing to be sniffed at in and of itself.

Game over... In September 30, 2013, the Nismo GT-R lapped the world-famous 12.9-mile Nurburgring Nordschleife track in 7 minutes and 8 seconds, making it the world's fastest production car, ever! The only "street cars" that beat it are the Radical (a go-kart, really, which is street legal in very few countries) and the Porsche 918 which is 11 seconds faster than the Nismo GT-R. The 918, however, is a limited production hybrid hypercar that costs around one million euro/dollars. It's not a 4-seater like the GT-R either.

(pt2 lap times) A few seconds may not seem like much to you, but to anyone who is remotely competitive, a few tenths of a second are a huge advantage. A few FULL seconds? That's a world of difference right there.

@rforracing Whoa, calm down man, don't get so mad. First of all, the 4th Generation SRT-10 has never been around the ring. The standard LF-A has a time of 7:38. Second, the last Viper Clarkson reviewed was a 3rd gen, not the 4th Gen. Plus, if you could not tell that car made him very happy. Finally, the ACR was not a variant built specifically for the Nurburgring. It is just a Viper with adjustable suspension, wing, splitter, for improved track use on any track.

@PrimiusLovin "By the way, I'd still prefer the GTR, I bet it's the cheapest to buy and mantain of them all" If you're talking about the Nissan GTR- You might be in for a bit of a shock. Even a simple oil-change on the GTR is an expensive job. Stealerships alone were charging OVER 200 bucks for this (I dont know if these prices have since come down with them, but i doubt much), with most shops charging 100+. This is because you need to take apart the front end to get to it (pt1 gtr)

@LiamE69 Yeah I guess we could argue all day as to what is technically a production but I will go with you on this one (mostly). So, allow me to rephrase my position a bit to avoid a circular argument common on the internet. The Viper has the record for a mass produced vehicle on an assembly line. I hope that works. It lost to the Gumpert by less than a second while weighing about 800lbs heavier. Same tires. Not to shabby! As long as it beats Porsche, Chevy, Nissan, etc it's all good for me. :-)

@thybigballs The Lexus LFA has never held any record whatsoever around the ring. Beating a time that wasnt the record doesnt give you any records. A Gumpert ran a 7:11 two years before either of these cars set a wheel on the track for instance. The lap record for road legal production cars has been held by the Radical SR8 LM since 2009, which beat the mark set by the Radical SR8 in 2005.

mike force It's all driver based. He may be better in a different style car or this may be the car he drives best, but there's still someone out there that could've smoked this time. I was looking at some times the other night and seem where one guy ran quite a few seconds faster in the same car (wanna say the car was a 918). I think the time difference was something ridiculous, like 11 seconds. That's why these Nurburgring laps can't be taken too seriously. there could be a guy hop into something you'd never expect to set a record and end up blowing the Nio EP9 out of the water.

Mavelous time! It seems to move around a little too much and the gearing may need a bit of fine tuning. Anyway it's a great time that proves it's not all about Corvettes when it comes to american performance cars ;-) Btw the partly open window may have claimed a few tenths ;-)

Apollo it's an Artistic production Car. Unlike the Vipr ACR that was(in that time) a normal Production Car.

there will be no speed limits anymore in 2016. right at the moment they are building new FIA safety fences and smothening the track surface at the most dangerous parts of the track

@ESPsandEmgs Unfortunately for your reading comprehension I have never said it isnt. The ACR-X is not road legal and that is still 15 seconds a lap slower than a road legal Radical. The road legal ACR is a full 24 seconds slower. The Radical holds the ring record for a road legal production car. The Gumpert hold the ring record for a German registered road legal production car. The ACR is left holding its nuts with no records whatsoever.... sooooo

@LiamE69 and what do you mean by dodge doesnt stand in comparsion? the dodge acr x did the nurburging in 7:03 but its not street legal. you seem mad when fact is that the viper gave every other car in its league a slap

A few seconds on a track the size/speed of the nurburgring amounts to diddly piss and is hardly worth "bragging" about. The ring can be bright /sunny in one section, and rainy/damp/wet in another. A hairline mistake can lose you a few seconds on this track- and bragging about a few seconds of superiority is anecdotal there

@NWA90s Its road legal throughout the EU and is road legal in Germany where the ring is. Why would anywhere else matter? It stands to reason that the car that holds any given record is likely to be extreme and indeed the Radicals are. But they are road legal production cars. So why exactly are they not comparable? Because you say so? Or because Dodge know their cars dont stand the comparison and so dont want it? And while you are at it how exactly do you discount the Gumpert?

@LiamE69 The only way Radicals are more practical than motorbikes is that they have four wheels. Like a motorbike they have no roof, no trunk, and no luxury amenities. You can drive the ACR to the track in rainy weather. I would like to see a Radical owner do that.

@EmptySoulRSR (pt2) For many out there, Cars such as the Gumpert and the Radical(s) are *not* "production" vehicles. I'm one of those people, I view such vehicles as nothing more than small-order "adult kit cars". Not exactly intending to argue with you, just elaborating on the situation that arguing with is, or isnt a "production" car can be tricky.

@rforracing Why would you expect any record holders to be typical cars? By definition they will be exceptional. Every car is a compromise between factors such as comfort, space, speed and so on. It stands to reason that record holders will be ones that focus on one factor as Radicals do. But the ACR and LFA are also extreme cars just to a marginally lesser extent. Radicals are more practical than motorbikes and are built from the ground up to be road legal cars focused on track performance.
