Dodging HURRICANE GONZALO in St Maarten and St Barth's, CARIBBEAN

It was only with extreme luck that we left St Maarten and St Barth's just early enough this season to escape the wrath of what the islands expected to be a 30-40knot tropical storm, but turned into Hurricane Gonzalo just as it moved over St Barth's this past week... Our hearts and deepest condolences go out to families and friends of those that lost their lives, and the 30+ boats lost or sunk in this tragic sudden shift of weather... we wish only the best, and a speedy recovery for all those who suffered losses in this storm.
The footage in the video was filmed in September 2014, about 2-3 weeks before Hurricane Gonzalo struck.. we had just left St Maarten very late in the season, and knew there was a high risk in being that far north at the time, but we headed for St Barth's on an intermediate stopover to St Kitt's on our way South to Grenada for the rest of the Hurricane season. Columbier Beach was absolutely spectacular, and of course being this late in the season we had it entirely to ourselves! We managed to get some nice drone footage from 'Sophisticated Lady' with our new "Mariner" Waterproof Drone, and you'll see that in the video.

Rick, You were very, very fortunate to leave when you did. I arrived (by air) Oyster Pond the day after the hurricane hit. Boats up on the shore in every harbor we visited. Saw three boats in one day removed from Gustavia and crushed by a large clawed machine. Many were live aboards. Very sad and tragic.

Was hoping, but been too busy working in northern islands.. Lots of work been done on the boat including complete refit of entire anchor system.. you'll see everything unfold this season in the new "Just Another Day in Paradise" Series we just started posting.. stay tuned! :)

Just curious, I have watched a few of your videos and was wondering if you even have sails on the boat, everywhere I see you move the boat is always under engine power.

flacousa62 We sail a lot, as you will see in many other videos on the channel.. but with the cameras we use, they are very sensitive to saltwater splashing, so have to be very careful when the boat is plowing through waves which is usually the case when sailing.. hence when it's beautiful and calm, is an easy time to bring them out and still get some nice shots! :)

the wind generator is 400w and we have 250w of solar power, but soon to upgrade both... and yes, we luckily just missed this storm as it passed slightly north of us in St Lucia!

Do you take people on for a trip that can share in help on the boat plus pay a fee. Wonder what the fees would be and how long the stays would be on the boat. Ive been thnking it would be a nice way to enjoy some sailboat time. Don't know if you do stuff like that or not. It would just be myself male person.

Lovely videos. Really enjoying your story. BTW, I am a private pilot. Please be careful with the drone, especially if flying high with occupied aircraft in the area. Private planes fly as low as 500 feet and obviously lower on approach to land and taking off, so please stay well below that. There have been drone strikes, but fortunately, it has only resulted in thousands of dollars of damage and no loss of life! Thanks for sharing your adventure! :-)

I think "Private Planes" need to be regulated better.. I"m tired of them thinking they Own The Sky! All of them think they can just land on any Highway when they have an emergency and Take out innocent civilians. It's a regular event lately.

i'm a commercial pilot and flight instructor. Students are TAUGHT to land on highways or any available road in the event of a critical emergency such as complete engine failure with failure to restart and/or a fire. If the FAA finds out that the emergency was the result of negligence or inadequate training (such as fuel starvation versus exhaustion) they will take appropriate training/certificate action against the pilot.

Already have new ones onboard to replace the current sheets... just waiting to get South so as not to put any undue wear and tear on the brand new ones that the old ones can still handle! :)
