Hello All.
In this video I ride out of Colter Bay, where I spent a very enjoyable half day off, and make it to a lovely lakeside campsite. The next morning I am woken by a storm, which I was fortunately able to wait out before setting off for the day. After another good days ride I spend the night in a cabin, before completing the riding for this video with a short highway ride into Pinedale, where I get a new tyre fitted on my bike, and spend a day resting and preparing for tackling the great basin, which you will see in the next video!
Thank you for watching, and if you're enjoying this series please subscribe to follow along.
00:00. Good morning, back on the trail
03:02. Starting an eventful climb
08:53. Campsite for the night
10:03. Morning storm
15:57. Sleeping at a safety shelter
19:42. Arriving in Pinedale
22:15. Lovely accommodation
23:13. Some thoughts about the ride so far
27:31. Shaving incident
28:52. Goodbye

I have an interesting story about Pinedale, Wy. I rode my road bike up the mountain outside of town and upon returning to town, I encountered a MAJOR thunderstorm (temps dropped from the 80s down to the 50s with hail). When I got back to town, I needed to cross 4 lanes of traffic to get to my motel and was shivering from the cold. After about 30 seconds of waiting, all 4 lanes of traffic stopped (no red light, no stop sign) so I could cross. I’ll never forget the courtesy of those people. Thanks, Pinedale.

Great story. It sums up the kind of people you encounter in these wonderful places. Pinedale was a great town. I can honestly say that I didn't have one single negative experience with anybody on the whole GDMBR. Thanks for commenting 👍

Ya the belts can't take any stretching, especially at an angle. So make sure to loosen the tensioner when you put it on. Don't just pry or pop it on. You should get that app that measures the sound as you strum the belt to help get the tension correct. If its correct, it should never come off.

Another great video Mat. It's good to see that the mile-munching, distance checking mindset hasn't taken hold of you, as it sometimes subconsciously can when this far, percentage-wise, into a big trip. (Or was that just me ...?🤔) And pay no heed to the naysayers as the new, and dare I say improved, Mat 2.0 smooth version is a good look 😉👌 This series of videos is coming across as a very true and genuine account of your personal trip, with an on the fly transcript that reads word for word like you could have taken it straight from your diary. You are doing a fantastic job! Love watching & learning about the Divide.. are you doing the Adventure Cycling route? I understand that there are 3 different routes to go on. Did you have to do “The Wall”? I don’t think I saw you do that part. I’m thinking about doing parts of the Divide, would need the easiest version as I’m 67 & have medical issues so I ride a gravel e-bike, your route looks like there are plenty of re-supply stops for the most part & of course I could always take detours around the most difficult sections, so far watching your route is encouraging to me! Thank you for filming & your honesty! Keep pedaling, all the best!

@matryderadventures 11 ай бұрын
Hi. I don't remember doing the wall and can't find out exactly where it is. I have, so far biked the official ACA route and taken no alternatives. Maybe somebody else could answer in the comments??? There are plenty of alternate routes which bypass the more technical sections so I'm sure you'd be able to make your own route. Resupplies are, so far very easy. Stores, gas stations etc. seem to be fairly common. I'm glad you're encouraged and am sure that you'd enjoy this route. Thanks for commenting 👍

Hi Mat, a Gates center track belt does not just run off the sprockets. The belt tension must either be very slack or a stone must have come between while driving. If the latter has happened, there is a chance that the belt will break at a later stage. I'd put a new belt on it in Pinedale, with the Great Divide Basin ahead.
@matryderadventures
@matryderadventures 11 ай бұрын

Hi, really enjoying your journey and the videos. Thank you to you and your editor for taking the time. Watched a lot of these type of vids, mainly Americans. I think the fact you're British (Greetings from a near neighbour on the Isle of Man), not a professional, and possibly similar age to me means I am enjoying these much more. Also the fact that you're still out there means something. Shave taken years off you btw. Must think of a question now.

See if yiu can pick up some Citronella oil it’s cheap as chips and a few dabs and your neck and wrists the bugs hate it worth a try for a few bucks and smells nice and sweet normally comes in a really small bottle and last forever bout size of a tipex bottle. How much on average is a pint of beer over there pls. Atb Coops 👍🏻🍻

Thanks for commenting, I will try and mention the costs of things a little more as I go, I am also thinking of doing a video when I am done going over the costings of the whole tour, which I think would be useful for anyone considering riding the route themselves. And yes I think the bears do put people off, with good reason as well I suppose. It's always in the back of my mind, and as much as I've enjoyed everything so far, the presence of bears have really influenced a lot of decisions I have made. When hiking the AT I liked to just walk as far as I could in a day, and then camp wherever I fancied, but with this I have been conscious that I want to make it to established campsites/towns where you feel a little safer.

I am constantly nervous about the security of my bike, but I have had to force myself to leave it at times. I couldn't justify the weight of bringing my kryptonite lock, instead I just have a lightweight Kevlar one, which I'm sure could be dealt with in seconds by any would-be bike thief. One of the advantages of meeting people on the ride has been that when we reach towns together we just watch each other's bikes. Thank you for commenting 👍

I would have taken an e-bike 🤣🤣 not really!! So far the bike has been perfect. Maybe the tyres could have been less trail focussed, but I don't know what widths are available in the more road focussed ones and I like the suspension effect from wider tyres. A shorter stem for a more upright riding position would have been good as the horns would still enable me be more aerodynamic when necessary. I'll definitely do a more detailed video review once I've finished. All in all, I'm happy with my choices though. Thanks for the question. Any others, fire away. Cheers 👍

Hi Mat! Amy let me me know a few weeks back that you were doing this ride, and I just wanted to know that I’m now an avid watcher. I did the Trans-Am a decade ago and headed back to the US to ride TD. I made the mistake, however, on starting in New Mexico. Man, it nearly killed me! I was told when I got further north that New Mexico is pretty much all uphill when going NOBO. Didn’t find that in the research, did I!! Anyhow, I ended up quitting the route and making my own adventure in Banff. You’ve inspired me, however, to go back next June and ride it as part of the Grand Depart. Can’t wait for your video showing us Toaster House in Pie Town NM!! Stay strong, brother. Oh, what nav system are you using? Is it a Wahoo?

Hi. I think I'm just lucky to have chosen to go southbound. It sounds like the easier way to go. Especially considering you've done the Trans Am..I'm guessing I would have really struggled if I started in New Mexico. It's great to hear that you're doing it next year. We'll keep in touch and I can follow you on your ride. I'm looking forward to The toaster house. I think it closed for a while but I hear it's open again. I'm using a Wahoo Element Bolt. It's worked perfectly. Cheers.

They look like Kleen Kanteen. Sturdy steel. I have 64 oz. Fairly wide mouth. Also 32 oz I believe. You can boil water or cook in them if needed. I used them on GDMBR last year. One fell off and rolled a hundred meters with a little dent. They can rattle in the cage so I zip tied a piece of rubber padding to dampen the bounce.
@matryderadventures
@matryderadventures 11 ай бұрын
Yes Keith is correct, Klean Kanteen. They are amazing, very durable, with a wide mouth as you said, Ketih, meaning they are nice to drink out of and also quite easy to clean out. I have two of the regular stainless steel bottles, and then one insulated one which I planned to use for taking a coffee with me when I find them at stops, but I have actually used much more for keeping cold drinks cold in the hot weather. Thank you for watching.

Hi Matt, loving this series of videos, making me wonder about having a go at the GDMBR myself. You are filming this very well, its good to see where you stop and whats going on. You could start to include the people you meet, I know it seems daunting to put a camera in someone's face, I'm a youtuber so know first hand. Its best to just ask them first, most folks don't care, or feel pleased to be included. You could also film the bears in you can hold the camera still haha. Keep it up, love your attitude to the journey, same as my way of doings things now, jst ride and see what comes along, no stressing about time of distance. You'll be super pleased you filmed all this as its great to watch back later on where your back home. All the best Matt, be cool to meet up when back in the UK maybe.
