Күн бұрынIn today's video I go for a night out in the woods on a freezing cold January night to show my ultralight backpacking setup, and demonstrate how it can work even in cold weather. The setup I use is a refined version of the gear I had when completing my thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail in 2019.
I became slightly obsessed with getting my base weight as low as possible ahead of setting off on that daunting adventure, and as I have said in previous videos, ultralight backpacking is probably the one topic I feel qualified to speak on with any authority, so if you have any questions about the gear I have used, or ultralight backpacking in general, then please leave a comment below.

Hi Mat. WOW, I clicked on the link for the Zpacks Arc Haul and I nearly choked on the moth that flew out of my wallet. How much!!? 😱 I honestly didn't know that rucksacks could cost as much, and I'd say that I'm very clued up with gear. I do want to buy a new tent for bikepacking and that Duplex fits the weight and volume bill (with a couple of collapsible tent poles) but I'm anxious about the condensation of a single skin. I might have to accept it as a trade off if I can't find a suitable double skin tent. I'd like to see another Ryde with Rossanory video, the last one was most enjoyable. I'm impressed to find out that you used to race motorbikes! Me too 🙂🏍 Nice montage, that picture of you two on the wooden jetty is particularly nice. Cheers 🙂👍

Hi Tony. It really didn't cost that much when I bought mine. It's a great pack but I think it's a bit too expensive now. I have an Atom Packs Atom which I really like and they do an Atom+ which looks great. It's still a bit expensive but more reasonably priced I think and UK made. As for the tent, the airflow is exceptionally good and reduces the condensation substantially. Additionally, when it does get wet it dries incredibly quickly. I have the collapsible tent poles. It's a fantastic tent and I wouldn't think twice about replacing it once it finally wears out. I've filmed a brief review of the Duplex which should be out later this week on a separate review channel which we're starting. There will be an announcement and links on this channel so keep an eye out. Ryde with Rossanory 😄. Excellent name. I'm sure we'll get another episode in soon. Interesting to hear that you raced bikes. What did you have? I raced (crashed) a Yamaha R6 and a Honda Hornet. I wasn't very good... Cheers 👍

@@matryderadventures Hi Mat, sorry for the tardy reply. Yes, I have no qualms about paying good money for quality kit but that Arc Haul has crossed the line into 'boutique label' price territory. Atom are a handmade Cumbrian company, I'd favour that setup and they use waterproof materials on their rucksacks. The tent review is good timing and I'll look forward to seeing that. New channel eh, sounds great. Ryde Review & Rated , I'll subscribe to that 🙂 I primarily raced Motocross as that is where my professional aspirations lay, alas to no avail. I went through several Honda and Yamaha 125 & 250's and ended my MX days on a Husqvarna CR 500. All 2 strokes btw, I'm a few years older than you. R6 and Hornet eh, lovely bikes! I'm a Honda 4 stroke fanboi 😁 I was also quite handy on a road bike and had a Honda VF 750-R that turned out to be faster than me on a race track 😃. Oh happy daze ...

Great video. I did think I was watching The Full Monty to begin with and then wondered what any dog walkers would be thinking, seeing you stripping off and talking to yourself. But it takes alsorts to make the world go round 😂 Glad you survived the freezing weather. Keep up the good work😊

Another excellent video! Really like that tent. The Grand Canyon is certainly worth seeing, though these days the South Rim is unpleasantly overrun with tourists. I’m sure you know about the Rim to Rim trail (a 90 yr old woman recently did that in about 24 hrs). The North Rim sees far less tourists, and the views are equally spectacular. And the Arizona Trail is supposedly awesome. Looking forward to seeing more adventures! Thank you!

It's an excellent tent and has held up well. If I don't take on the Arizona trail I'll definitely do the Rim to rim. 90 years old, 24 hours. I love hearing stuff like that. It gives me hope for my old age!!! Cheers and thanks for watching 👍

I honestly couldn't believe it at the time. I always check the seals now. I imagine I was just unlucky. Thankfully it didn't cause too much of a problem.

I’m thinking of getting a durston solid 1P for U.K. bikepacking trips. I’ve done the Outer Hebrides, now think of doing the Scottish north coast 500 🤔🤔 I used a six moon Luna solo but it was out matched by the Outer Hebrides winds 😳😳

Those Duration tents look really good. I'd have a serious look if I needed to replace the Duplex. I bet the Outer Hebrides winds are a match for any lightweight tent. My stupid heavy Nortent would.maynr hold up but is about 6 times heavier 😬. Cheers 👍

Hi Matt, really enjoyed hearing how lightweight you managed to get your kit for the AT. You mentioned your footwear briefly but that must have been a very significant piece of kit for such a long hike. Did you do the whole thing with a single pair of shoes? Also keen to know about your shoes for the GDMBR. Very inspired by your ability to get out whenever you can.

Hi. I used Altra Lone Peaks (various versions depending on updates etc.). They worked well for me but I took the time to gradually get used to zero drop shoes before I set off. I got around 500 miles out of each pair. Sometimes I had to go a little further, but by 500 miles the padding for the sole was shot. On the gdmbr I used 5.10 Freeriders. I think they were the dlx version. It's the only pair of specific mountain bike shoes I've ever bought so have no idea how theu compare to other brands. I saw that Duzer uses them so thought they must be pretty decent. They certain lasted well. Cheers 👍

Yup, Nemo Tensor EC (Extreme Conditions). 8.5 R-value. VERY quiet and comfortable. My long/wide rectangular tips the scales at 618g by itself, and 683g with the pump sack. I do think Nemo's pump sack is a bit idiotic; it's designed such that you blow into it, but then why bother with the pump sack at all? I use the EXPED Schnozzle which fits well enough, but have a Flextail Zero on the way or I'll default to my Flextail mini pump. I just discovered something else you might enjoy, and it's pretty cheap. The Olight OClip light. It's just a clip on light that you can clip on your tent as a lantern, on your chest strap, etc. Does the white light with 'moonlight mode' for crazy long run times, the red light modes, and requisite epilepsy stroby nonsense it seems like all modern lights have. It's absolutely tiny, and only weighs something like 32g, and is USB-C rechargeable. It's got a magnet on it as well, which is handy, and is made of aluminum so is quite robust. I also use an NU-25 (I have one for each pack; they just live there) but find that even though likely unnecessary, the duplicity of the Oclip is really nice to have, and I've thought about replacing the headlamp with the Oclip. We'll see how that goes, I suppose. Toothpaste: I'm all about the toothpaste tablets. They don't get squeezed out all over everything; just chew them a bit and brush. Very nice option. Thanks for sharing your experiences on the AT. I always find peoples stories about their challenges so interesting, and it's a way to connect, I think, through tales of our suffering. There's an honesty that comes with admitting fatigue, fear, and suffering; that's what makes it human and honest, I think.

I'll take a look at the Nemo. It looks interesting. I'll have to wait until my x Therm fails, which may be a while. I've had it for around 8 years I think. I'll also take a look at the Olight OClip. You're likely going to cost me money!!! Toothbrush tablets sound interesting. I have a Flextail Zero. It's worth the weight. Very cool. Cheers 👍

It is still there. I've never stayed there myself but it looks like a nice site. It's a really interesting place and pretty much deserted. I'm hoping to get out for a hot tent camp there soon. Hope you're both well. cheers.

Hey brother Mat 😅 On the Ufo sighting of 1980. I've seen this incident mentioned in several videos I've seen. In the most recent one that I've seen, actually earlier this week, they claim that they know for a fact the light people saw was from a lighthouse not far away. Are there lighthouses within 15-20 miles of Rendelsham Forest? I don't know what to make of it. I don't trust the debunkers, but I also can't clai they are wrong. It's more mind boggling to think about walking something like the Appalachian Trail. I have a huge respect for that but you're a man of the two-wheeled freedom machine now 😅 That said, it is awesome that you're willing to share your knowledge and experience with those who might be thinking about doing the AT. To them your insight is priceless, but though there are som fundamental differences, it's not all that different from what's needed for bikepacking either, rendering it out of the question to make the odd cross-reference between the two types of travel. If that makes sense in English. It did in Norwegian 😋 But there you go, that's me pretending to be an Englishman. No sense of introspection 😅

🤣 you did a fantastic job of pretending to be an Englishman brother!!! There is a lighthouse at Southwold and that's fairly close, also Orford Ness has a lighthouse so it's entirely likely that it was a lighthouse. I will.do.some.mlre research at some point. I 100% believe that we are not alone on the universe but I also think aliens would know how to hide from us effectively, unless they wanted to be seen, in which case we'd see them all the time. Bikepacking and hiking definitely have a lot of similarities. Bikepacking is more civilised!!! Thanks again for commenting. Cheers. 👍

If you were to thru-hike a long trail again would the drone work out as neutral weight given it can carry itself? Of course it would need some sort of constant power line wired in so you would need to drag a generator or large solar array with you, but I am sure you could think of a work around for that, perhaps a beefier drone that could carry some of your gear for you?

🤣🤣 you have me laughing every time. 'Large solar array' 🤣🤣. How long before drones could carry all of the equipment though? Maybe another five years! I'd say it'll be cheating but that's what older hikers with massive steel framed backpacks and hobnail boots say about me.

I've never really paid attention but I think around 15 times. Amazingly, I bought bone on the AT as every shelter seemed to have abandoned but half full gas canisters left by day hikers. I hope that helps.

I carried bear spray for most of the GDMBR because of terrifying Grizzly bears. I didn't bother taking it on the AT. Bears can be a problem but mostly ran off as soon as they saw me.

How much did your thru hike experience assist you on the GDMBR ?

Hi Scott. I think the thru hiking experience made all the difference on the GDMBR. I think the most challenging thing about the GDMBR is the mental challenge and the AT helped. I have to say that the logistics on the GDMBR were a lot easier than the AT.

Hi Ernie. I had an RD350 YPVS but raced a Yamaha R6 and a Honda Hornet. The RD was an epic bike. I crashed it, fixed it, sold it to a friend who also crashed it. Such a cool bike but lethal. Mine was black and red. I would have loved to get it on the track.

@@matryderadventures Mine was black and red, they were faster than the white ones (Scientifically proved fact!) 🤣 I had 350 LC's as well, they are all mega money now. I was more into off-road racing but dabbled in most types of the sport.

Are they collector bikes now? I'm not surprised. I bet most ended up in hedges or wrapped around trees. Black and red was best. I had a mate with an lc and it was a very cool bike. He also had a TZR250 which sadly I never rode. I knew a guy with an RD500. I bet there aren't many of those around now. His was the only one I ever saw.

@@matryderadventures Your not wrong about RD's getting smashed up, I remember loads of kids crashing them. (I only crashed once on the road, on a unrestricted AP50 moped aged 16 🤣) My mate had a Suzuki 500 gamma, Kevin Shwantz replica Sounded ace but was a frightening thing when ridden properly! scared me TBH as power was incredible for the weight. I sometimes idly look up bikes I owned and raced on Ebay, they all sell for loads of money now........ 20K for a nice YPVS ! Fizzies go for north of 5K, I sold mine to a kid a college for £50 when I traded up to a 125.
