Does a Roof Rack Wind Deflector actually make it Quieter?? Before/After Adding Fairing Measurements

Today we use SCIENCE to find out if a roof rack wind deflector actually makes it quieter in a car... what could possibly go wrong?

But I'm a special kind of crazy.

Thank you for asking! These videos get published a bit out of order and not in as timely as a fashion as I would like, but my wife is still fighting leukemia. we just passed the two year mark and they have moved her into the next phase of the chemo treatment, and the prognosis is good… Numbers are progressing in the direction that we would like to see them go, and we are hopeful!

Nice VW. What was the mpg gain with the airescreen? Also prayers your way.

Thanks! We noticed a full 2mpg average increase with the deflector in place, which made sense given the change in volume and frequency was accompanied by a decrease in wind turbulence and resistance. I think if we ditch the kayak rack attachments when we're not kayaking, it would probably help even more with that. And thank you for the prayers! We'll take all we can get! My wife and brother-in-law are both still fighting cancer. My wife is doing pretty good but the chemo takes a lot out of her.

I didn't think to test it with the roof open, mainly because when we're carrying something, it's usually wet and we don't want it dripping inside :) But may be worth revisiting and resting for that noise level difference.

Are you using the NIOSH app for the decibel meter!

Decibel X... it's one of the few I've found that allows you to calibrate its readings using a professional meter. I also use Octave RTA to look at the frequency distribution histiograph.

Not sure how familiar you are with the KZfaq system, but as a very small fish in the pond with a tiny channel, I have zero say in how many adverts they paste onto my videos. While I appreciate your frustration - I hate having to wait through them myself - please don't penalize me or my channel for the sake of something beyond my control. Thanks!

@@TimmyBobinson that's not really a factor, but negative votes do affect how the algorithm chooses to recommend my videos to others or not. Seems like every couple of months or so KZfaq changes how they do things, and I've noticed more ads lately, especially on all the smaller channels I subscribe to myself.
