The Department of Justice is currently investigating admissions policies at Harvard to see whether they discriminate against Asian-Americans.
The Asian-American Coalition for Education is arguing that affirmative action hurts Asian students' chance at getting into Ivy League schools. We spoke with the head of that coalition, a student who feels being Asian hurt his college application, and an NAACP Legal Defense Fund lawyer to try and settle the debate.

If you are truly capable in football or basketball they don't look away regardless of your race. If you are truly capable while black or hispanic, employers are prone to looking the other way. @@wrathoflichking9603 I'm at UCLA in STEM right now so this isn't about me. I'm only here because I went to all white schools growing up. Black schools receive $23 billion less in funding per year than white schools so this isn't about a little competition. They are *prevented from ever being competitive*. This was intentional on the part of the whites who fear blacks ever rising to their level. And upon "freeing" blacks, they never made amendments to improve conditions for blacks. You're foolish in fighting for 1% or so in your favor. If you go after anyone, go after those that get in by name or money. But frankly, the asian students that did not get into the schools simply WERE NOT QUALIFIED. GPA/SAT alone do not indicate one's capacity to make meaningful change in the world and to think up novel solutions to problems in the field. They simply figured a way to get through the education system. These students with a mere high GPA probably received lackluster letters from teachers and counselors who couldn't even remember them - the quiet student that did the work but was unremarkable in every way.

@@wrathoflichking9603 Again, and I already stated this, having nothing beyond a decent GPA and SAT is not remarkable in any form. They need to have interacted with and made an impact on their community, needed to have developed strong relationships with their teachers and school counselors and needed to have actually impressed them, needed to have been well-rounded and skilled in a multitude of ways. Ivy league students are typically involved in a wide range of activities, from music to chess to sports to robot design to research and even publishing papers. If you want to get into an Ivy league, you need to be remarkable and you need to be well rounded. Simply being able to go through the motions of school is NOT promising. You forget about the 20-30% of asians that make up these Ivy leagues. These are the asians that were obviously qualified and well-rounded enough. This clearly is not discrimination. If it were truly discrimination, you'd see much lower percentages of asians. This is why they lost. They were off base in claiming racism and discrimination. If they wanted to have improved their chances, they should have attacked those that paid their way into the school.

After Prop 209 passed, black and latino enrollment DROPPED to single digits, while Asians gained the most seats (about 10-15%). White people's enrollment went UP by about 5-8%, not dropped. Also, just because race is banned in academic admissions, doesn't mean women will somehow become a 3/4th majority. Will you see an increase in Asian women? Yes, because they are discriminated by Affirmative Action. But you'll also see an increase in Asian MEN, because they too suffer from a ridiculous point penalty in enrollment, for being Asian.

Yes, blacks are entitled to a K-12 education as mandated by law. Now, are they taking full advantage of that? Are their parents supportive and involved in their education to where they can succeed? Do you see most black students spending their free time in libraries, or are they pursuing other, non-educational activities, i.e. sports, that could better be spent on getting better grades and building knowledge instead. //If they weren't getting the same foundation, excluding college athletes whose admissions are not related to grades (the majority of whom squander their free ride going for low-tier majors so as to focus more on practice anyways, doesn't help after the "bombshell" ESPN's report that some college athletes couldn't even read/write past a 3rd grade level), they wouldn't have a presence in college at all, but we can see that some do, and its those black students in particular that realize the importance of education/college.

In high school, there's such a thing as weighed and unweighed GPAs. Weighed GPAs stop at 4.0, unweighed goes above a 4.0 if you take AP (advanced placement classes). When I graduated high school, I had a 4.125 unweighed GPA and a 3.9-something weighed GPA (got at most 2 b's in my entire hs career if i remember correctly) . Yes, I am Vietnamese-American, and no, I didn't even bother applying to any Ivy/private schools b/c i knew my stats while being asian weren't competitive enough for me to get in compared to other Asian students. Went to a UC instead. Oh well. I'm assuming this kid went to a very privileged high school which had a lot of AP classes for him to take which he probably aced, therefore making his unweighed GPA a 4.7. Smart kid. Edit: saw that you wrote "in medical school" sorry for the mis-read! Regardless, kids like him would apply their smarts and work ethics in whatever graduate school/career they pursue. Trey Jones the point is you want a doctor who has a greater brain capacity and higher intelligence to assess your ailment. This isn't flipping burgers or laying brick. This is a practice where you're learning, retaining,assessing and then applying a science on a daily basis until you're retired. You can't do that with a low iq or the inability to do all these things efficiently. I'm Asian. I could've gone to medical school in the islands and take my license 100 times till I passed. I don't think they are contradictory. Quota is more like: "We must have X number of Y race" whereas wholistic policy is that race is just one piece of a large puzzle. For example, a leadership quota may be "30% of the admitted students must have been president of some high school club" whereas a wholistic policy that considers leadership means that leadership activity is just one of many things that the admissions committee considers, and that there is no quota of how many students should have been president.

the context is the same.. but in technical terms they are different... they are not using quotas mean that there is no ceiling for one race to be admitted... however the term consideration for ones race means that despite being a C-Level student, as long as youre " racially under-represented" then you will still get a spot over A-Level White Male, A-Level Asian male.. etc etc.. its basically rephrasing: "If youre black, you get an undeserved spot; If youre a White Male, youre out"

(Way to go for your use of exaggeration here :D). Then you go about describing Korean education and what not. I mean, I get where your coming from with that. A lot of studious students even in China go through this as well, but you have to understand that they aren't the only ethnic groups that classify as asians. Mind blowing isn't it? So obviously not all asians were raised the same. Now here's something else that caught my attention. You mentioned something about having diversity present there. Now I agree, diversity is important. But allowing for those asian americans to get rejected all for the sake of "diversity" is ok? In my opinion, it shouldn't matter how they were raised, what matters is the work they put into getting there. And that dedication should be recognised no matter what race you fall under.

The problem is it's never a meritocracy from the start. Black and Latino students are more likely to go to schools which have been under supported directly as a consequence of racist housing policies and Northern style separate but equal schooling. I'm not saying this to bash anyone in particular but just pointing out that getting rid of affirmative action doesn't make it a meritocracy. Affirmative action is at best a band aid intended to reverse centuries of different types of discrimination and it is necessarily not going to be ideal. That being said, affirmative action being removed would not really foster true meritocracy without removal of the institutional issues that gave rise to its need.

California outlawed affirmative action in 1996. Before 1997, black students were about 10% of Stanford University in California at any given time, after 1997 when the anti-affirmative action went into affect, black students have never surpassed more than 5% of Stanford's student body ever. They are currently only between 1% to 2% of Stanford, UC Davis, UC Berkley, UCLA, USC, etc... Asians on the other hand have exploded at all those schools ranging from 35% to 45%. So right at the moment they are born to that culture, black students are already disadvantaged in term of motivation and resources to study. Thus, affirmative action is expected to balance that out by sort of giving them a "new start", a new opportunity.

Hoa, I think we need to be careful with this kind of speech as it can be misinterpreted, but we also need to be objective. Looking at the facts, does there seem to be a higher valuation of education amongst asian cultures than others such as african americans? My experience as a teacher would say yes, but we ought to be mindful that it is NOT the individual students fault. No one chooses to be born in a family that prioritizes education over one that doesn't. However, we need to examine this issue objectively, in order to solve it. What is contributing to this asymmetry between cultures?

I bet here comes some argument how hard it is in the ghetto...but I'm sure the slums of India have been very kind to Indians, industrial towns in China are such easy places to live in. Permanent victims.

We need to groom our kids to become self-reliant and hardworking people. We don't want to be a bunch of dependent pests. With all do respect to Asains. Secondly, afirmative action does not guarantee anyone a job or guarantee any one an education. It only in a FEW cases guarantees that a minority which includes white women & Asains will be considered for a job or an educational opportunity because prior to afirmative action only white males where mainly consider. ... Blacks protested for you to have your rights. Try & educate yourself about that part of American history. With out afirmative action white males would have continued their discrimination. ... i know this is not pleasing to the ears to hear, but it's the truth. All minorities including Asains & white women should be okay with affirmative action to protect their right to be considered for educational and employment opportunities. If Asains thinks systematic or individual racism by those in power or in the majority did not exist then or does not exist now in the United States of America they are delusional. .. I think a huge problem is that All of America's history is not taught to people born in America or people who immigrate to America. In my opinion without affirmative white males will return to the status quo of prior to affirmative action.., there's a saying be careful of what you ask for, you just might get it... The only fair way to do this is to do a blind review of test scores and grades and a personal letter. It ain't that hard lots of European countries do so already. Bear Arms here we get grades for those Ashwell and is then combined with our other grades. We do not have any asats or other test. We use our grades + examination results. Though universitys can choose to have a second intake that is no more then 50% of the quote that is reliant on interviews, test results, practical test and/or work experience or a combination. This way you get a mix of ages and ppl with life experience and theoretical knowledge. Not saying it is perfect at all. But in combination with no fees it in general gives everyone a fair chance to get in, even if you learned the nessesary skilles other ways then high-school. Thou even with thise rules intake is squad towards students from high income families and families with academic background.
@Mira_linn
@Mira_linn 6 жыл бұрын
i guess that is why they use a 2 intake system ;) but it is quite hard to say what is racist. should it be that the rules for intake is equal for all then it will not represente race in sociaty or if you fix the procentages to reflext sociaty it will no longer be equal requerments for students. so i guess you can't make it non discriminatory.

This is an interesting topic as a part of me says: "Bring it on and let's continue to outscore and actually take that as a compliment that we have reached this status now from nothing to knowing that each Asians name will be attached with incredible scores" and a part of me says: "wait, this is't right because it should all be based on what talents students bring in along with meeting a standard score to create an opportunity for all." Then I really started thinking about this and eventually realized that the problem is not Affirmative Action because in the end that truly just hurts everyone. The true problem is within the communities themselves. If we are truly to give everyone an opportunity then we need to eradicate low income and poverty communities and empower those communities with all the tools they need so they can equally rise to receive top notch education. And eventually, with time, everyone will be on a fair plane level and the scores along with your accomplishments and what you have to offer will truly be the reason why you should get in. Now, how we get rid of low income and poverty level communities to empower them to higher education, that is a whole different topic because trust me, at that level - every ethnic groups suffer. Because Asian Families' mentality on the word honor is one of the main core of Asian families, that mentality has overcome many life difficulties at all level of finances and so I see where we can get upset but also see what we have achieved to the point where we have become 100% the ones to beat. Now I do not speak for all Asians but at this point, I truly believe to level the field, we need to tackle the issue of low income and poverty level communities to rise them above that to truly make it fair nationwide for all.

Same thing back in Malaysia when I was growing up. Due to the quota system, chinese malaysians have to go through an extra 2 years of pre-university and fight for the last 3% to get into the field that they want after high school standardized exams. If you get sick during the two weeks of exam period, then you had no choice but to go into the field of study based on your grades. What made this worse was that Malay high school kids were admitted to local Universities STEM fields based on their local high school grades regardless of how they did in their standardized exams. The government wanted to produce engineers to help build the country, what they got was a bunch of business graduates who switched majors. I was one one the lucky ones who got the opportunity to study overseas and I never looked back. I consider this a blessing in disguise!

Its really sad because the world is so westernised to the extent where , Asian universities that produce quality graduates get overshadowed by American universities just because they are not “ popular “ or “ well known “ enough. The same goes for the academic industry , most academic awards and titles originates from western countries , thus there is a hidden bias to awarding academic awards or accolades to white or western people. Thus western people tend to get more recognised for their academic contribution as compared to their Asian counterparts. The world’s education system and industry is just too biased and flawed. But this problem will never be solved because discrimination will always exist sadly.

You are right and wrong. I went to both. From my own experiences, Asian universities are good, but they heavily focus on technical skills. It has to do with asian culture and personality as well as the way the school system (middle, high school) work in Asia. In the other hand, US universities teach you about critical thinking in order to become leaders. USA invented/created MBA programs. Back in the date, there were not any MBA programs in Asia or Europe because most students in Europe and Asia tends to focus on improving their technical skills. Therefore, MS programs are more popular in Asia or Europe.

I wrote an essay for some colleges about affirmative action discriminating against Asian Americans. I got deffered from both colleges I sent that specific essay to. However, one excellent point I managed to research, that should have been included in this video, is that California forbids using race as a factor for their state schools. UCLA and UC Berkeley do have a higher proportion of Asian students, but it doesn't actually come at a major detriment to other minorities. Ultimately, affirmative action grants one group and advantage over another, which inherently increases the difficulty for the groups not given an advantage.

Well I wasn’t good enough to be “targeted” by affirmative action, I only applied for schools of my level which were all the UCs, but I can’t help but imagine how horrible it must feel to be at the top of the top and get rejected from those ivy leagues. It makes me almost thankful I didn’t work any harder than I did.

'Blind applications', I believe, are the solution. You may run into a situation where groups without access to quality education will score lower, but I believe that will help uncover a much larger issue.

If there was no affirmative actions, the whole campus would be Chinese, Korean, and Japanese students lol. As much as I think it’s unfair, there is a valid argument that you don’t want the campus to become Seoul University/University of Tokyo/Qinghua University.

DM584 source? Who told you UC Berkeley doesn’t use affirmative action anymore? Are you part of the admissions committee by any chance? Concerning the NBA, the comparison isn’t really valid since the NBA isn’t associated with governmental agencies while UC Berkeley is part of the UC system, which is Californian program. And please, the American public won’t accept a domestic US school with Americans being a minority. Asians are still a minority in the US and white Americans the majority. For an American school to be almost exclusively filled with Asians would cause an outrage.

So? Asians on the whole work harder, as shown by department of education. Why should it matter what the ethnic makeup of a school is? Would you be saying the same thing if a campus was majority black or brown?
