As I am getting older, time seems to be going at a quicker pace than it used to. In the past, a year seemed like a long time; however, a year now seems like a short amount of time. And as I am entering my next decade of life, I understand that my life will pass me by if I don’t live with intention. I need to take steps in my life to make sure I am living a meaningful, intentional life. In this video, I share five lessons on time that help you control the speed of time in your life.
1. Forgiveness Is The Only Path Forward
Often we live in the past and allow our negative experiences from our past prevent us from moving forward in life to create new experiences. A man named “Anthony Ray Hinton” was incarcerated for 30 years for a crime he didn’t commit and once he was released from prison he spoke about the importance of forgiveness in the healing process and said, “If I am angry and unforgiving, they will take the rest of my life.” It is important to live with forgiveness in your life and not allow your past experiences to prevent you from living in the present because then your life will pass you by.
2. The Speed Of Time Is Connected To Experiences
For most people, childhood is the slowest phase of life where you gain many memories. I believe that this is because when you are a child you have traits like curiosity, excitement, and the willingness to learn that create many memories; however, when we become adults we often are set in our ways, blase, and unwilling to learn, which makes us live the same day over and over. When you try new things, you create new memories in your life. And when you have these new memories, time slows down a bit. In order to not let life pass you by, it is important to constantly be trying new things.
3. Nothing Will Happen Unless You Make It Happen
For many people, they wait for this ideal moment in life to take a risk to seek what they want; however, this moment doesn’t exist. There will never be a moment in life where everything is ideal, but you have to make it happen or it won’t happen. Nobody will ever knock on your door to offer you some opportunity. If you spend your life waiting for a perfect moment, then things will never happen. In order to not let life pass you by, it is important to take steps in your life to make things happen.
4. Freedom Is A Mindset Over Anything Else
Freedom has been something I have been thinking a lot about because it is a very complex topic. Before, I believed that freedom was connected to money and the more money you have the more freedom you have; however, now I know that this is not true. I believe that freedom is more about mindset than money, and it is important to be in this mindset where you believe in yourself and trust that things will work out. If you have the belief that freedom directly comes from money, you risk fast forwarding through the greatest parts of your life and might be met with disappointment. In order to not let life pass you by, it is important to chase freedom in your life instead of believing that it will just come to you.
5. The Future Is Not Some Place, But Something We Are Creating Now
We spend a huge chuck of our lives living in the future. We believe that the future is this place where we will be met with many surprises; however, the future is determined by what you are doing today. In the past seven months, I have been really focused on living in the present because I have so much uncertainty in my life; however, I have come to the realization that it doesn’t matter how much certainty you have in life because the present is still all you have. When you fully immerse yourself in the present and give it all you have, your future will probably be some better version of what you are doing now. Life won’t pass you by because you are not spending your whole life in the future.

Believe it or not, having my 93 year-old mother, who has moderate dementia, as part of my household definitely forces me to live more in the present moment. I almost never refer to the past with her, as her memory of it is poor. And for obvious reasons, I don't discuss next year, the year after that, etc. It's actually an excellent exercise in focusing solely on what's in front of you: a flower you see on a walk, a squirrel you pass on the sidewalk, the meal you're currently eating, a movie you're watching. And when you think about it -- as you say in your video -- the present is where life is actually taking place. Everything else is a memory of what already happened or a fantasy of what might happen (which you will can only experience in the current moment, i.e., in the "now" anyway). Very rich topic!

After 45 years of hospice nursing, I renewed the love of piano, and now do music therapy in nursing homes for dementia residents. Also love painting kindness rocks lol. So now, at 86, I am still at the work I love, and still hike with my daughters. Doubt, regret, (a lot) anger and worry are silent killers. It will rob you of the joy and peace that life offers, and provide no solutions. I have listened to all of Austin’s videos. I’ve said they should be required subjects in the schools. He continues to inspire me! Namaste! 💕

Working another 2yr is the not the problem. the problem is will you still retire well after that? I think the wisest thing that should be on every wise individual's list is to invest in different stream of income; I am earning more this year because I have been investing while working at the same time. I invested through *ROCHELLE DUNGCA-SCHREIBER,* same woman that an anchor kept mentioning on CNBC, and made multiple of my start up capital within three months . You know I have this tendency to think if I don't have a routine, I'm not disciplined and will be thought of as lazy. What I have found through counseling over the past year working on managing anxiety is sprinkling bits of fun, like driving a different route home, checking out a different grocery store every so often (and not caring how much more i may spend there), and giving myself more breaks...it's all been a game changer for me. I realize spontanaity help me not feel like a robot day to day. It's made such a difference. I'm always trying to think of even little ways to spark my day. Here is something else are uou really bad at something or maybe want to try something but kind of afraid? Give it a try. I'm not creative I decided to take up painting as a recent interest/hobby. As a kid who didn't like school. I didn't like reading. Now I can't put books down whether it be a novel or self help book. I never thought I would love running...I'm a marathon runner now. I never thought I was smart and high school was rough wondering if I would ever enjoy learning. I'm a nurse and in school working on my doctorate for nurse practitioner. So what he is saying about your past, DO NOT let labels and expectations from childhood and adolescence define you. Make your path and add to your garden as you get older. Continue expanding interests and learning (I am not talking about school).

Lesson one hit me right in the solar plexus, it was exactly what I needed to hear. I think you just saved me a small fortune in therapy.🧡 In Australia we're constantly told we need a million dollars at least to retire which is simply untrue. We retired early with less than 20% of that. We live a frugal life but we miss out on nothing. Owning our time is more valuable. The age pension is not available until age 67 and as long as you're debt free it is more than enough to live on.

Just something that I needed to hear this week. I have been working from home as a virtual assistant for the past 10 years and my eyes have just been opened to the reality that life has passed me by because I haven't had a lot of experiences because I was too focused on making money. Now that I have come to a realization that life is not just about making money, I plan on going on adventures, doesn't have to cost much but I will make sure that I don't just sit at my desk all day. After all, I can be a digital nomad.

So true! Living with intention is something I've tried to help my husband see. He has so many health problems that he focuses on it is difficult for him to find joy in the day to day living. We plan experiences every chance we can so that we can focus on the precious time we still have together. Time has seemed to fly by, but at least we have the great memories we have created to look back on and smile and talk about together. Thank you for your insightfulness and wisdom Austin.

I new one day ill get older and those things wouldn't be possible . Its about living for the moment . In reality is only thing you have is the moment , sure you have good and bad memory's . But now is happening to you right now . One thing at a time , are risks worth it 100 percent , I'm 44 this year now . Satisfaction is just momentary . Nothing good last forever . I've learned to focus on what I am and what I have now instead of dwelling on past losses. Those were bridges I had to burn. I experienced a huge feeling of release, all that weight off my shoulders. The more I let go, the more I've been getting, I ask for little so every little gesture or material gain has acquired greater value. I'm never late for work or appointments because I'm living in my own terms, and one hour seems to last 120 minutes.

I am 38 and now time flies pretty quick from my perspective. What I found, though, is my sense of time changes when I travel and visit other places from time to time. If I spend a week in a totally different place (not in the city where I live) and when I immediately look back I have an impression that the last month was quite long and so many things happened. Just like in childhood when as a kid you would go here and there and meet new people and created all those memories, we can have a similar thing when we travel. Sometimes I catch myself reminiscing my life in other countries and meeting people there like as if I really have lived there for a long time while in fact I stayed there not more than 2 weeks in a few places. My conclusion: the more frequent you stay in a single place the more you feel the time speeds up. To slow it down we have to move :)

Careful of living just in the present moment always. I was forced into that mindset due to catastrophic child Illness; Life was lived moment to moment, and I never understood what that really meant until my child taught me about it. It sounds good until you are truly, truly forced to do it, and then it messes you up so bad. I did t realize how damaging living that way for so long was until I could finally peek my head out and take a look forward or backwards. It’s inexplicable, but it’s a very damaging mindset to truly , truly live that way for a long period of time. Thank you for that profound life lesson ( and many more) strongest person I know!

Great information. Only advice I would add, is this: Live with intention but with responsibility. I believe life is a balance. Not to much work or to much “fun”. It is okay to plan ahead. Why? To have better chances that the goal or journey will be possible. Always trust the universe when something is really wanted from the heart. Yes, live in the moment, because “in the moment” is the future. Much love and respect ❤

I'm going to tell you something that I've been working on the last 3 years. It has been a challenge but getting easier. I should tell you I semi-retired early at 43. I block off my summer months June, July and August. No appointments at all. I may expand this but it's been a challenge already. I will tell you, receptionists do fight surprisingly hard over it, lol! The first year, not that successful but I tried and better than before, but I did have to go out every other week running around for CSA boxes, that was really annoying. Last year I had hair and nail appointments. I had to cancel the CSA boxes. You have to decide what is important and get rid of the appointments. This year, I've booked the last hair appointment before summer already, I am going to drop the nail appointments - I have fake nails so committing to removing them - going full bore! This sounds easy but it takes looking at last years appointment book because you don't think about business as usual, but these things all take up time.

Austin, you are describing an almost global(based on the majority of working force population) phenomenon of a ''state of paralysis''. Cognitive paralysis, emotional paralysis. A point where the average young person(25-35 yrs) thinks that it is too late to take a life changing initiative and at the same time he or she strongly believes that he or she can still achieve something in life. This dissonance, this ambiguity creates a paralyzing stress effect that cripples modern human and places him or her under the spell of a comfort zone. Nothing is more luring than the indulgence of a repeatable, predictable life.

The good tng is though i have realised i dnt have time for many ppl and their dramas and cut anyone off who wastes my time bcz i value my time way more now 🤷‍♀️🥰

I'm 60 years old I could tell you about time and I could tell you what happens even to the best of us mutate you do the best that you can you enjoy life and be good excetera cetera and help people but you get to a point where your body simply can't do as much as it used to and one of the hardest things to do as it gets accept the limitations that your body puts on you there's a book by the name of necessary losses this book is a fabulous book it teaches you what it what to expect that every decade and I know for a fact that it's not easy but I am grateful the number one thing you need as you get older and start to lose stuff and physical abilities is gratitude gratitude is the most important thing above all else thank you very much for all your videos they're very insightful they help me they're funny I enjoy your videos very very much you're in my top 10 KZfaqrs thank you thank you thank you Augustine Augustine Augustine..

Bro, I know what you mean! It shouldn't have to be like that... Hey, download the book, " Enjoy Life Forever!" What a change in outlook, meaning and purpose it's giving me! A few months ago a friend sent me an interactive digital copy. I prefer hard copy old-school books made of actual paper, but with so many digital features available now you miss out on a lot that way. The digital comes with lots of videos and interviews that really hit home for me. I have to admit that It does have a lot of Bible quotations in it- but the more I read it the more the explanations make sense- just fills in a lot of blanks for me. I never thought I would like Bible kinda stuff- but this is different- it's not preachy or religious sounding . It's more like using simple reasoning and common sense- like finding the pieces to a puzzle you only had half finished or something... Anyway, just thought I'd pass it on. Love your videos! -David M.

I just found your channel a couple weeks back and this is my first time commenting. I think your videos really hit on a lot of important points about our modern world, technology, distraction, and consumerism. I really appreciate you presenting these viewpoints in the way you do, because not many other KZfaqrs are doing so. I think we're just about the same age and this video really resonated with me. Thanks for all you do!
