As the US warns of a potential power vacuum in Gaza, James O'Brien questions Benjamin Netanyahu's strategy amid escalating conflict between Hamas and the IDF.
Israeli troops have advanced for the first time towards the centre of Rafah and launched operations in several areas where there has previously been fighting.
Thousands of Israelis joined protests over the weekend calling for a deal to bring home hostages still held in Gaza by Hamas and the resignation of Netanyahu.
However, James argues that Netanyahu is 'not committed' to these demands and has a different motive entirely.

The Maquis sometimes "went too far". Sometimes they were excessively brutal when they arrested and executed German soldiers and officials. And some of the people punished for collaborating with the enemy weren't collaborators at all but were the victims of false accusations by their enemies. But only a fool or a monster would say that the resistance as a whole was wrong. Just as some individual German soldiers might have been relatively innocent but the German occupation as a whole was brutal and illegitimate and entirely deserving of resistance and overthrow.

If they gave equal rights to Palistinians and stop stealing their land and go back to living in peace, they wouldn't need to worry about insurgents. But they would have to worry about a growing population of Palistinians at the voting booths (something they want to avoid completely). So a 2 state solution is the only one possible (which Israel also will be against).

I have a thought I'd like to leave you with on the topic of the current and arguably many previous Isreali leadership. That is to paraphrase Benjamin N. on video > Americans are easy to pieces to move around...we just need to play with the wording and the specifics...< Curious if you'd play that video side by side with your thoughts here, I honestly hope it doesn't infuriate you but it should. Current death toll ratio since Oct 7th: 1 to 27 - That's 27 people in Gaza have died for every victim of the Oct 7th attack. How high does this need to get before people admit that this isn't about Israel "defending itself"?
