Bran Stark, or the Three-Eyed Raven, is something more than human now. He sees all, he knows all, he is a master chess player moving around our characters like pieces on a board. Or is he? Does he know what he is doing, is there even a plan behind his actions? In this video I explore what Bran has become, what his powers are, and what his goals are as we head into the final episode of Game of Thrones.

I definitely think Bran told Tyrion that KL and it's people would burn. I look at the convo he had when he released Jamie. He assured him the Iron Fleet would be gone and if Jamie didn't go to Cersei, he'd never see her again. Tyrion also knew this was the last time he would ever see Jamie. Tyrion was just very confident that Dani and her dragon would take KL despite Viserion going down so easily. Almost like he knew what the outcome was going to be. IDK? Sounds better in my head

I think what Bran is doing is closer to art restoration. There is one way the future is supposed to be, and Bran is using his own creativity and the tools he has (people around him) to get it there.

The intense way he snapped at her and told her the Night King had her dragon seemed like he was trying to get a rise out of her on purpose. And then he looked at her when they asked if dragon fire would kill the Night King and he said no one had ever tried. I agree with you and think all this plus Jon's secret combined to make her deviate from the plan and recklessly go after the Night King, which led to Jorah's death (and almost hers).

He was meant to make sure Cersie died. Led to the sealed up crypt by her little brother, not strangled, but suffocated by rubble.

He did it all for cersie. In his head he help defeat the dead for cersie... so cersie would be safe. IMO . Soon as it was done he nailed brienne and went back to cersie

@@yakiralovesall maybe his role was to leave a Lannister with Brienne, so the line continues, Tyrion will have no children. I don't know why people are angry, Jaime was always going to be with Cersei unless he died in the war at Winterfell, He would have always gone back to her even after being with Brienne. People want happy endings in a story we have been told many times that there is no happy ending.

If there is a long-term plan, there has been little foreshadowing in the show. I assume he will play a large role in the future. Given his abilities, learning from the past should allow him to make better decisions for the future.

Its not crazy! is what will happen in the books! The mad king heard bran´s call in the flames, Burn them all (the Walkers), bran travels through time and eventually tries to change events from happening or even changing the future.

This analysis encourages me to think about what Bran has become. I agree to your opinion that Bran does not foresee everything coming up. Based on info he has gotten from the past, he certainly has a better prediction than anyone else; however, he knows that he should not attempt to revert what is supposed to happen. As it is known in many myths, an attempt to change the predestined future will eventually bring the same outcome in a uglier way. As a Three Eyed Raven, Bran has only one purpose: his survival. Until he finds his successor, like the only librarian who can access the archive of human knowledge and experience, he will only browse and check out a specific document that is requested by someone else.

Bran might be the true villain. Uses people to survive and takes the crown. We don’t need the raven, or even know if it’s a good thing. He could have easily intervened to help Dany, but instead sat back and let Kings Landing burn and Jon kill her. Other than sympathy for him loosing his legs, why do we care about him?

I am starting to suspect this as well. When all is said and done we may find out that Bran (The Three Eyed Raven) has been pulling strings across time and that he is the true bad guy (who wins in the end).

I don't know, I just feel like Bran's whole arc is moot at this point. He's really done nothing at all to help the situations they are in. He could have told Jon not to tell Sansa. He could have warned Jon about Daeny. He could have done many things to save lives, but he didn't. I can't imagine George's story will have him be so seemingly useless. Makes me sad.

This is an amazing analysis Joe. With that said, I feel you are giving D&D far more credit than they deserve. While this MAY be their intended use for Bran, they don't explicate any of this detail for the casual audience on the show. Their motivations could perhaps be perfectly synced with your reading of the events on the show, but the after-the-episode mini-docs don't convey to me that they've put this much thought into Bran.

To be honest I don't think they will do anything more with Brans character. We'll probably get a 45 second scene where he say something weird then rolls off. I'm not happy about it but I honestly think his character was just there to end the night king and now that he helped Aryatl his role is finished. Arya or Jon will probably kill Dany and we'll find out Arya is pregnant with Gendrys Bastard or something then The End.

Thank you for this great video. I get so frustrated when people keep saying that Bran knows what will happen. What Bran knows is the greater pattern of cycles of history and can see how things may work out much as a good historian can do in real life. He isn't the one playing chess with people he is observing the game with a greater knowledge and using what influence he has to keep mankind going on. What he sees in his visions/green dreams is just as difficult to place in time as anyone else's visions and is also apt to be symbolic.

He can see possible futures, not necessarily the one true future. Hence the funny look when he gave Arya the dagger. That action shifted the set of possible futures. Who had the dagger was an important fork in the road.

In the books he has greensight, meaning he can see the future, but it's slightly vague. He dreamed of the seas drowning winterfell, flowing over the walls. It was him seeing theon greyjoy capturing winterfell.

Bran can only see the past not the future, that was probably a Dragon from the Dance of Dragons or Balerion the Dredd.

Cannot argue both ways for Bran, as Joe does. He sees past or future, or both. He sees clearly - or not. He can change the future by shaping it Joe says - but then why would he need to? Seems like convenience argument to me.

@@kathyfahey5469 I don't argue both ways. He sees visions and brief glimpses of the future, not anything like his extremely clear visions of the past. So it's built in uncertainty into the future, that no one really knows what is coming. Bran's power is mostly making the most informed guesses.

The moment he said he didn't know if Dragon Fire would work because nobody every tried pretty much confirmed that he's Westeros Google. I guess Sansa is much more at fault than Tyrion, her dislike or even fear of Daenerys is what ultimately confirmed what Dany would become. She was literally crucial in turning Dany into the Mad Queen.

Victor Vasconcellos But for good reason. I’ve never liked Sansa, but in this instance, she is right. Sansa wants a free and independent North! NO ONE SHOULD RULE THE NORTH! And when Dany turned, that’s why Sansa doesn’t like her. There’s a valid, legitimate reason, but Dany fans don’t ever want to open their eyes to her true intent.

Hello. Did you see the crows at the red keep when Cersei surrendered? When the crows were there,we saw the Drogon's take off and after some seconds we saw his shadow over kings landing.THE SAME things that Brann saw in his visions. The only time we saw the crows at the war was at the moments that Brann showed us via visions(Drogon's take off and his shadow). Also this moment includes Dany's decision to BURN THEM ALL. The phrase tthat her father spammed. is it coincidence? Could it be some kind of warg behind of this madness?

I already commented on this excellent video. Wanted to add something I just realized. You know when is the first time we see the Shadow Of Drogon over King’s Landing? Bran has a Vision of it on the second episode of season 4...and who wrote that episode? George. It’s the last episode he wrote for the show. Food for thought.

What I can't stop thinking about after the last episode is two things from episode 4. The conversation between Davos and Tyrion about the Lord of Light and the fact that he just up and left after the death of the Night King, with direct transition to Tyrion having a chat with Bran. Then the later reveal to Sansa and Arya, where Bran just goes "It's your choice" after a slight "Uh-oh!" look on his face when Jon says "I've never been a Stark". Not sure if Bran has a plan or if he just tried to preserve the history of the world (i.e. him self) up until the point when the threat to him self was gone and apart from that just let things happen. Or if he realized that it actually did not matter what he did, how things played after that was up to Jon and nothing he could do would change that.

Bran knew how Jon would choose, not because he foresaw it, but because he knew Jon well enough to conclude that telling his sisters is just in character for him. Dany asking Jon to keep it a secret was never going to happen and anyone familiar with Jon would know that.

So glad you did this video, i've been thinking about Bran a lot, but haven't been able to put the dots together, so this really helped. I've been thinking a lot about Tyrion as well. Looking at all he's done and all he's been through. Prior to episode 5, I thought there could be a chance that supporting Jon was a misdirect and that ultimately Varys felt Tyrion was the best for the throne. Everything Varys feels is important in a leader, Tyrion has displayed. Jon is honorable and all, but he has stupid tendencies just like his father. Tyrion has shown courage in battle (even though he always get knocked out), he's shown compassion, he's shown his ability to thoughtfully strategize, he's shown love, and loyalty, he cares about the cripples, bastards, and broken things, and admittedly, he loves the game. It wasn't Dani that governed Mereen...she was off on a dragon most of the time, it was Tyrion. He's also had the most meaningful interactions with all the main cast, he helped Jon adjust to the nights watch, he showed kindness to Sansa, he gave Bran the saddle drawing, he even showed Cersei compassion in trying to save her life. Who knows if there will be a throne at the end of it all, but if there is, Tyrion is the only character who has shown himself deserving to sit upon it.

I think he does!! because on episode 1 of this current season, he was very adamant to tell Jon about his heritage. he pressed Sam to tell Jon about his parents!! why? I think he saw what Dannerys was going to do in King's Landing as his vision of the Dragon flying over KL in season 4. I think he told Arya and Sansa not to trust Danny, because not matter all the good things Danny did to save the North. they wouldn't trust her.

Thank you for your analysis. I need help making sense of how Bran winds up in the end. After S8E5, I still wonder about his motivation and if he isn’t taking a cue from Sun Tzu in The Art of War, “…when we are able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must appear inactive…” Is he truly impartial about people? Would that be because he is some kind of hybrid personification of history and nature? I love this story so much, I don’t want to miss anything GRRM and D&D are trying to convey-- from Sansa's attention to detail with her stitches, to battle strategies (or lack thereof), to the main underlying themes and all the human struggles and character development. Love how it stirs the imagination and makes me think. I’m looking forward to this last episode and everyone’s thoughts afterward.

A fairly ambitious and intellectual theory it would seem. You sure that's where the showrunners at? Alternative approach: To Benioff and Weiss Bran is bird dude. The purpose of bird dude is to facilitate overhead shots and provide a scene with a weird and mystical or merely pensive mood. Bird dude can also be used as a plot device but he's not actually supposed to do anything.

Remember the plan was for Danny and John to wait for the night King to show himself before they attack but then Danny saw her people dying and was mad as it is so she deviated from the plan like John has in the past

Apparently Bran’s plan is to bring Drogon back, God knows why. Maybe he’s dissatisfied that so many major characters are still alive. Well, we’ll never know now. And maybe that’s a good thing.

First, thank you. Thanks for helping me rationalize wtf is going on. If you can do another video as to why Dany went bezerk I would appreciate it. Second, I think he does have a play with the Jon and Dany resolution. He did not seem to like Dany from the start, or maybe even wanted to add to her descent into insanity by acting especially cold to her. But he wanted Jon to know as this is the most important thing. Also, Bran knew Sam would have an emotional reaction to the Jon news and knew *how* he would tell Jon. I think his goal is to get Jon gone. I agree with you re Tyrion-- I hope and pray the Tyrion and Bran convos pay off! Bran also gave Tyrion a look as we has being wheeled off into the Godswood, which never paid off. At least not yet.

Danielle I disagree. I did see his eyes light up when he saw Jon. And, he was actually angry at Sansa and Dany. Remember, “we don’t have time for this”? I think there was some aspects of Sansa and Dany’s past that he didn’t like.

Nathan Furtado Apparently, he can only get glimpses of the future. He also saw the sept being destroyed by wildfire, and the red keep's roof burned with snow filling the throne room as dany saw in the house of the undying.

All the more reason nothing makes sense. That convo with bran and jaime...how did jaime end up going back to cersei? And what part did he have to play? He was certainly not really any help in the battle of winterfell. He had one good hand he could barely used. He must have had some greater purpose than to die holding cersei. Amd lile he said, he isnt that person anymore. And bran didnt disagree with him. Only saying he would be if he hadnt pushed him out the window. Im honestly so confused over the character arc decents of some of these people. I cant make sense out of it.is this how GRRM is going do things? Im so confused.

I said this elsewhere but Jaimie had other parts to play for sure, supporting Tyrion for one. And knighting Brienne was VERY important imo. And really, he was true to his character, always had his addiction to Cersei and it tripped hi up many times but when his honor was at stake he chose to fight for the North--because he had given his word to do so. That's his character, too, doesn't mean the 2 sides don't have a conflict though. ;)

I've always assumed Bran could not see Essos, but I can't recall what I based that on. It's been a year or so since I reread the books. Doesn't he need a Weirwood relatively near where he wants to look? I'm holding out hope that the Night King was a subersion and Bran (3ER) is the real antagonist.

so bran did the same thing with Daenerys that he did with Hodor. For all we know, Dany in the “vision” was flying straight towards the redkeep, but Bran jumped the gun & in so, telling Sam to tell Jon then Sansa & Arya is what started this domino effect. in hindsight, he’s the reason that what happened , happened in the first place, it’s his fault, essentially, that everything in the future played out as such. Does that make sense ?

Thanks a lot it answered my 3 weeks ago question, after the Long Night. Arya to Hound, Bran to Theon,House Stark changed their motto to « Thank you! » I think Bran is taking this Three Eyed Raven for granted ! He is Bran when it benefits him and vice versa!! It’s like he is malingering !! So sneaky !!

Jamie was important to live so it impacts Tyrion’s decision making. Then once captured Tyrion allows him to escape. This impacts his relationship with Dany.
