Tragic Idealism: Why we should pity Daenerys Targaryen

In light of last week's war crime, many have names Daenerys to be the true villain of Game of Thrones. But today I'm going a bit of a more controversial route, and dubbing our Mad Queen to be the story's tragic hero. So let's look at her arc through the lenses of Shakespeare, Marxism, and Don Quixote, to determine why Daenerys Targaryen was always doomed.
Please watch to the end before commenting.

if you want to see this type of story done much better, i would advise on watching an anime called, Code Geass. diferent from Game of Thrones, they actually set everything, and while tragic, both times it happens, are much more harrowing, and sad, but at the same time, they both feel more honest.

@Pilusmagnus, i disagree, having a convincing analysis doesnt make a story good, you can find convincing analysis of movies like cloud atlas, battlefield earth and even the prequels. what people needed was a well developed turn, and IF she was to turn this suddenly, to at least give her a reason to. at the start of that episode, she had NO INTENTION of doing anything besides take the throne, however, because her loverboy, said he didnt want to shag her that day, she went from a invader to a genocider. that's not subtle, that is going 180 for no good reason, and no, taking her frustration on the population WHEN HER TARGET WAS STILL ALIVE is not a good reason.

@@deimantev8641 I think it could work, especially with where she ended up-thinking that only she (and potentially Jon) was/ were just and right and that committing unspeakable atrocities was for the good of everyone. Her dialogue with Jon illustrates the depth of her delusions of grandeur. Essentially, this all boils down to absolute power corrupting absolutely. The problem was that the writing was so hamfisted, the pacing so poor, and the character development so lacking that the transition didn't make sense.

Turning into a tyrant or being cruel doesn’t make anyone insane. In other words, a person can be a tyrant or cruel and be completely sane. The writers did nothing to show she went crazy. They showed she was sad, lonely, neglected, jealous, angry and eventually tyrannical, but definitely not “insane.”
@AeonX86
@AeonX86 5 жыл бұрын
@@aldridkg I get what you're saying but, watching those you love get killed right in front of your eyes in a foreign land where no one likes or trust you and you feel isolated can drive one "insane" then she said to Jon that basically if other cities don't see peace her way then they'll die for it. They did show her going mad. Then to find out she's not the righful heir to the throne and gets paranoid about people finding out after such a long journey. She was clearly mentally spiraling out of control. Also not listening to her advisors and thinking she's the one that's right all the time made her look like she was definitely losing it.

Mr Casual Fighter Fighting game vids - the problem is that we have watched Dany for 7 yrs going through very similar & extreme situations. That is loss & betrayal. I’m not saying that her transition into a nonchalant tyrant is impossible. What I’m saying is that there wasn’t enough time devoted into getting her there. Moreover, as others have pointed, foreshadowing is not character development. She lost her husband, her baby and her home all in one day. As a mom, myself- It is actually more believable for a woman to totally lose it from the loss of a child & a husband in one day than of a friend. So no,the whole ending for her was very sloppy & silly. The whole night king arc was completely irrelevant/ inconsequential, as was Jon’s secret identity. And in my opinion both Cersei’s & Dany’s death were highly anti-climatic.

aldridk gessa I feel like this is why they kept proverbially mentioning how the gods flip a coin when it comes to Targaryens, it’s the symbolism that best explains how Targaryens are predisposed to being fragile in mind. Historically, the line btn sanity & madness has proven to be very thin for them. If you reflect on her preceding threats of burning cities to the ground & taking what’s hers with fire & blood, for someone rational that would be mistaken for empty threats meant to intimidate & display her fury towards her enemy, esp since she was painted as someone with the best intentions which by & large she is. But had the perception been that in her mind these werent empty threats & had people taken her at her word back then, they would’ve considered the possibility that she had a volatile nature, one indicative of a mentally precarious predisposition. So when it comes down to it, do you believe a person of sound mind would make threats of burning cities to the ground?Because once they actually go through with it, it’s hard to believe that they were simply speaking out of wrath & indignation.
@aldridkg
@aldridkg 5 жыл бұрын
Judi Gemini cause through history, we’ve seen that those in power who have made threats have all been insane? They developed her character to be good and just. Having a fault like a bad temper doesn’t make anyone insane either. In the Old Testament, King Solomon order a child to be cut in half, not what we would define as reasonable. Yet he is deemed the epitome of wisdom & justice. Mainly because of the results of his decision. Of course, it’s very possible to transition her character into one of madness, but that would’ve needed time to undo what they spent 8 yrs making. Yet they chose to do a repeat of her same old struggles, betrayal & loss that she’s successfully dealt with for years and tell us that this time it’s different, even though it’s the same- this time she’ll go insane. Psychologically speaking, people who overcome these types of extremely adverse situations (which def entails an uncommon strength of character) don’t just flip a switch when faced with similar struggles. The only thing the writers used to excuse this nonsense, is that she comes from a line of inbred Monarchs- but then they have Jon tell us that this in itself is not enough. And if we are to use real world examples- historically, the Pharaohs of ancient Egypt were mostly like that- yet “for the most part”, they weren’t lunatics. The whole thing is just lazy & silly.

Her major flaw was her entitlement to rule others in Westeros. She didn't realize her ideas of the throne had become outdated because she grew up in Essos and had become a foreigner as Westeros had moved on. Instead of understanding the current state of Westeros and its politics, she attempted to impose her vision of herself as a heroine without realizing that her family name had lost a great deal of credibility due to her father. She can still take the Throne if she wants but cannot expect to be loved for it immediately because people don't know her. In other words, she shouldn't have tried to play it diplomatically by not attacking King's Landing immediately. She should have just done it with a minimum amount of destruction and loss of life and then went on to trying to help people in the capital. Not attacking and then attacking later like a maniac was not a good thing. Attacking immediately after Cersei blew up the sept would have been much better as Cersei was clearly viewed as a tyrant in the capital and around Westeros. Then she could have helped the North and helped the people fight against the White Walkers and gained credibility as a queen that saved the realm.

The most useful tool to understand how she was set up to fail in my eyes, is comparing her circumstances to Jons. The characters are very similar in nature, but their chances very much are not. Both basicly just want to help people and dream of a home they are denied. Both sacrefice a lot for their goal of helping and doing the right thing and get discredited for it as it is read differently, but still they turn out very differently. Jon is raised by Ned Stark, one of the most honorable men present in the story, he grows up in close kinship with Robb and utterly adored by Arya so he knowes love and support dispite Cats every ambition to deny him both. He gets educated in what makes a good leader and men, but his bastard status keeps him humble to a point. Later on he always finds a mentor or guide who fills blank spots in his development, tyrion, the old bear, master aemon, the halfhand, mance, ygritte, they all teach him something that make his understanding of the world more well rounded, developes his empathy skill and helps him overcome misconceptions. He also is never truely alone, with first his siblings but later his friends in the watch, ygritte and in the show tormund and davos stepping in after he left his family. Dany on the other hand has as a role model and mentor viserys . . . great, is always surrounded by people who just want to use her, gets loaded up with insane expectations, Jorah has the hots for her, for she looks like his ex, the slaves regard her as a godess on earth . . . she gets worshiped, but not loved for who she is, only for what she could be for them . . . basicly, she has no support systhem and never had one. this difference is extreamly clear in the scene where Tormund drunkenly praises Jon, beeing physicly all over him. He is not afraid of Jon, he respects him, he would follow him into death, but he does not fear him, Jon is not some untouchable entity to worship for him, but a friend he loves dearly. Dany is not just envious of Jon being called a true king in that scene, she is utterly alone and broken hearted over that display of love and devotion as something she never experienced and has no clue of how to gain. Jon is her lover, but he never apeared as happy and open with her, as he does there with Tormund . . . Then there is the thing that she is bonded to a dragon, a solatary apex predator, he is bonded to a wolf, a highly social creature, very similar to a human. He is outbreed, she is double inbreed, both of her brothers and her father went mad, the likelyhood that she has not gotten the genetic inclination for doing so too is increadably low, she never had a home, went through terrible trauma without suficient support and got encouraged to lose it by Viseryses upbrnging, Dothraki cruelty, Quaithes urging to become the dragon . . . . she was set up to fail, not because she is evil, naturaly a worse person or anything like it, but everything went wrong for her

Yes! The comparison to Jon is very important, and the books actually make them even more parallel than the show does. He goes tp the wall to work for a place in the world needed to learn and addapt and only ever got rewarded for stuff he did for others while directly paying for pissing poeple of. He does not want to rule, but does it out of duty anyway, following neds exmple, so he never truely falls into the trap of thinking himself special. He gets rewarded for caring for sam, for emphesising with the wildlings, she gets rewardid for her blood, her dragons, walking through flames . . . . their difference in how they regard station, especialy with him being so closely entertwinesd with the wildlings could not have been nurtured any more different

It think the ending when he say he will look for Drogon was supposed to be a revealed that he had warg the dragon before. Maybe he did warg the dragon just after Daenarys's death. It could be the only time he knew how to do it because the dragon was not link to anyone anymore. Or maybe he started warging them when Daenarys and Jon kiss. Yeah having Tyrion as her hand was a big mistake because Tyrion didn't want his sister to die but the longer Dany left Cersei alive the more advantages Cersei got and the more Daenerys lost and started becoming rightfully bitter and losing faith in Tyrions advice it was sad how she was being treated after she helped defeat the dead

@@sydnitheromantictaylor112 Rightfully bitter? Tyrion has been busy stopping Dany from burning everything for 2 sesaons. Her first impulse now is always to burn any obstacle. There is not much rightful about her bitterness. The dragons she loves are nukes. Her claim to the throne is arbitrary (the Targaryans took the throne by force, so Roberts claim is not actually worse than hers). And she is a hypocrite - when she learns about Jons better claim, she suddenly doesn't care about legitimacy. Her claim is in the end now solely based on her ambition and power. She'll take it whatever the cost and regardless of lawful claim. She was already threatening to burn armies and cities in the second season. She's not a tragic hero. She's a cute looking vilain.

I am happy about this video and she is my favourite character because of her complexity. Below are my thoughts on her and it suits more towards her book character. Daenerys as a character is someone who believes she is special and is destined to greatness. She believes in destiny and she believes she is the one destined to right what she feels as wrong around the world. Her doing the impossible by birthing the dragons and surviving the fire only made her believe she is the "one". But it is also complex that she was given powerful destructive weapons to her and she is often tempted to use it to take the easy way. Her Essos arc is about how she struggles between her desire to right the wrongs and her impatience to not take it the easy way with fire and blood. In the Dothraki sea her temptation to use fire and blood wins and she gains the Dothraki who worship power behind her. This is how she becomes the conqueror ready to take Westeros. Westeros and the Iron Throne is her obsession because it is the only remnant of her family. She is repeatedly brainwashed by her brother and their hosts that they have to reclaim it. Her brother died in desperation for the same purpose and as the last Targaryen she made it her purpose. Her birthing dragons made her believe she got them for this purpose. For her Westeros is an idealistic dream, a place where she thought she belonged after spending her childhood running between cities under the mercy of other people. And it is Westeros that became her downfall. She has to face the harsh reality of her dreamland. How she is not welcome there. How she is not the Savior queen she thought she would be. How she is seen as an invading conqueror, the daughter of the mad King. She felt unloved and unwelcome. She is prevented from taking the easy way to throne by her advisors. They delay her destined path. Then comes Jon who is her parallel in this side of the sea. A person who achieved as greater things as her. A man who came back from death. She sees him as her equal. She admires him and falls in love with him. Then it slowly dawns to her that he is not an equal but a better replacement to her. He is what everything she wanted to be in Westeros and Westeros would cast her down for him. Her faith in her destiny shatters and she starts losing everything she holds dear and started losing her mind too. Now the only thing that remains with her is "fire and blood". She uses it and get what she wanted only to die in the hands of the man who she loved. It is a better end for her because the throne is an empty promise which wouldn't have given her happiness. She lost everything that made her a person to reach it. Perhaps death was the thing that freed her from the path she was forced into. And that is the tragedy of Daenerys Targaryen.

From William Blake’s poem, a perfect fit for Daenerys Targaryen. While destroying a tyrant she became a tyrant herself ‘The hand of Vengeance found the bed To which the purple tyrant fled; The iron hand crush’d the tyrant’s head, And became a tyrant in his stead.’ William Blake (1757-1827). The Poetical Works. 1908. The Pickering MS. The Grey Monk ‘I DIE, 1 I die!’ the Mother said, ‘My children die for lack of bread. What more has the merciless tyrant said?’ The Monk sat down on the stony bed. The blood red ran from the Grey Monk’s side, His hands and feet were wounded wide, His body bent, his arms and knees Like to the roots of ancient trees. His eye was dry; no tear could flow: A hollow groan first spoke his woe. He trembled and shudder’d upon the bed; At length with a feeble cry he said: ‘When God commanded this hand to write In the studious hours of deep midnight, He told me the writing I wrote should prove The bane of all that on Earth I love. ‘My brother starv’d between two walls, His children’s cry my soul appalls; I mock’d at the wrack and griding chain, My bent body mocks their torturing pain. ‘Thy father drew his sword in the North, With his thousands strong he marchèd forth, Thy brother has arm’d himself in steel, To avenge the wrongs thy children feel. ‘But vain the sword and vain the bow, They never can work War’s overthrow. The hermit’s prayer and the widow’s tear Alone can free the world from fear. ‘For a tear is an intellectual thing, And a sigh is the sword of an Angel King, And the bitter groan of the martyr’s woe Is an arrow from the Almighty’s bow. ‘The hand of Vengeance found the bed To which the purple tyrant fled; The iron hand crush’d the tyrant’s head, And became a tyrant in his stead.’

I think many people who identify as "emotionally passionate" usually act on their emotions and then try to intellectually justify them whether their arguments are sufficient or not. As for Daenerys (and NOT her only!) when someone becomes overly enthralled by something that passion can make them do uncharacteristic things that are unbecoming of them. One obstacle for Dany was that her passion for the throne (the throne being symbolic of power and sovereignty) was an unhealthy one, when it gets to that point of "it's my way or no way" then things can get very ugly and uncompromising. Consider that Dany herself said "I will take what is mine with FIRE and BLOOD!" Another key example is Stannis Baratheon, he was not "entirely" bad or evil but he was so eager and inclined to take the iron throne that "nothing" (good or bad) was going to halt him in his pursuit for power and authority. That is why he stooped to tyrannical levels when he tried to kill his nephew (even though a bastard, he was innocent) Gendry and then BURN HIS OWN daughter alive at the stake while she screamed! He didn't take any pleasure in this but that's what the thirst for power can do to good people, we have seen this throughout history in the real world, cruelty by (perhaps) good people in the bloody pursuit of power and glory!

Dany isn't mad. Just because someone does something cruel (especially in blood lust of war) doesn't mean they're insane. Were the Columbine shooters 'insane'? Was Ted Bundy? Or better yet, Stalin? Hitler? Mao? Castro? People comfort themselves by believing only 'crazy' people do crazy things. But many perfectly normal people do horrible things, especially in war. Why is no one complaining about the writers deciding to make Greyworm insane? Or the northern troops that were murdering and raping? Or the Dothraki? Had the Dothraki also gone 'crazy'? And yet the only explanation for Dany's behavior is insanity. Don't think so. Dany is beautiful, she is desired by male viewers and female viewers want to be her. She mouths a bunch of progressive sounding campaign mush and people ate it up...and they played heroic music with her scenes. People saw what they wanted to see. Very much like first season Sansa when she met Joffrey. Some of us have been wondering when y'all would buy a clue. Some of us have called this since season one, you know, when she began her power quest by burning the rape victim alive in a blood sacrifice. For which she was justly rewarded with three demon/dragon babies to rain down death and destruction on cities and yes, people. Go back and watch the series again. Listen for how many times she threatens to burn people/cities in her quest for power. How many times her advisers have to beg her not to. Her cruelty was on display this whole time. But so many, like first season Sansa, were fooled by her pretty face.

Many people think that she did this to place herself on the Throne and be the next ruler, but i think that is wrong. She was not going just for Red Keep, and she was not going for Cersei either (like we saw in last episode). her intetntions were to destroy Kings Landing (and Throne) and put an end to Games for Throne. There was a reason(symbolic) why Misandei said "Dracarys". As a former slave and her only friend that was left she said to Dany to burn everything and once again brake the chains for people of Westeros. Free them from opresing rulers that force them to play their games (no matter who is the one that sit in the Iron Throne there will always be unjustice and fear). I personaly never felt that her decent into maddnes was forced (though it was badly portrayed and written). Throne is something that she stirived all her life, and then when she was so close she lost it by her lover and also lost same lover because of throne. That is why i dont agree with you that she should destroy Red Keep, become a ruler and then fall into madness (that would be out of her character and her story would be just sad and her decline would be pointless). She is tragic character and if the show ends like i think it will, with her saying to people that they are free and there will be no more rulers of Westeros and then die by killing herself or by Jon, then she will be remembered as tragic hero, that did become mad but someone who broke the wheel and brought new rightfull goverment (propaly council), that will make Westeros prosperous.

"You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain." Her idealism was essentially her ultimate Achilles Heel that leads to her downfall. The greatest thing about her is her determination and strong will to keep fighting, no matter the cost. I think if she had approached her journey to Westeros differently and actually plan a strategy to earn the loyalty of the people rather than demand it, as so many other rulers have before her, things might have not gotten out of hand as fast as they did. From early childhood, being raised by her obsessive and delusional older brother, she had likely been brainwashed to believe her blood and name gave her entitlement to the throne and the people of Westeros. No one can deny her struggle, pain, and how hard she had to work to overcome every obstacle in her path, like most of the characters in this series. Yet, no one could ever justify the horrible actions she has taken since the moment she arrives in Westeros all because of her past. Burning and crucifying slave masters is extreme but obviously deserved, I don't like anyone would argue otherwise, but these weren't slave masters, they were families and little children. Remember in a previous season she chained and locked away her own dragons, who were her children, simply because of the burnt a single child to death? Where was that Daenerys at while she was murdering children her self? I feel she lost herself trying to achieve her goal and forgot the girl she used to be. In her paranoia that everyone would be betraying her, she inadvertently causes that very betrayal. I understand her fear regarding Jon because it doesn't matter if he didn't want the Throne, he had the better claim and he had the love of the people, at least in the North, and based off of the politics in Westeros that is a justifiable reason to be fearful. The only problem is she never stopped to consider how Jon's heritage could work in her advantage. She had become so obsessed with believing she was the only real justice in the world that she somehow didn't realize how Jon was essentially the physical unity between House Stark and House Targaryen. Through his parent's their houses are united in marriage, and through him, in blood. If Dany wanted to retain the North, simply marrying Jon, who shared a mutual love for her, would've effectively ended the tension. Sansa may have not been happy, but with an honorable Stark king beside an (occasionally questionable) just queen, she would've relented eventually (I'm talking before Dany burned King's Landing) It also seems like she has a lack of understanding about how things work in Westeros. Did she expect she'd simply show up in Westeros and everyone would fall at her feet like the Dothraki and Unsullied, and she'd be handed the Throne after a couple battles? If she has really been paying attention to what her advisors, many of who were actually raised in Westeros and held a deeper understanding of it's political and social complexities, should've known better. Her brutal and direct style of warfare works well in Essos because the Dothraki only answer to power, and they are a war driven society, just like in Slaver's Bay were the strongest and most powerful are the most respected. She is a natural commander and warrior (one of the few Queens who can actually use a damn sword), but having the Charisma to command soldiers and lead men into battle doesn't necessarily translate into having the tactfulness, sociability, and pragmatic thinking to lead a Kingdom. She also over the seasons seems to have lost whatever little ability she had to listen to anyone but herself. Aside from Olenna (and I don't think Epsidoe 5 is what she meant when she said to be a Dragon), and occasionally others, she doesn't really listen to what her advisors are telling her. She'd rather listen to her own inner voice and make decisions based on what she thinks is best as opposed to listening to what others have to say, despite them being more experienced and knowledgeable. The best leaders are those who listen to those who know more than them, especially when they disagree. No good leader ever did well by surrounding themselves with a bunch of "Yes" men that only say what they want to hear. Even when her closest advisors had the balls to confront her about her actions, she either dismissed them or ignored them, like a petty child who doesn't want to be told "No". History is the legacy we leave behind and it is the only thing to give legitimacy to our existence. Our history is all that is left of us. History remembers not only who takes the Throne but how they do it. She doesn't understand that. You can't just burn down everything in your way and expect people are going to be grateful for it. That's something she should've considered before allowing her emotions to rule her judgment in this episode. All in all, I've been rooting for her since the beginning but even then I had some idea she'd fall down the path many leaders like her have. I hoped she wouldn't make those same mistakes but I suppose that's the route writers chose to take her character down. To be honest we should've seen this coming. She had said from the beginning she would take back what was "stolen" from her in "Fire and Blood", and she did exactly that. Those people in King's Landing were already dead the moment Cersei brought them into the city. Starvation from a siege, Wildfire, or Dragonfire, anything they chose would've killed many if not all, so those people were dead before they even knew it. She also could've focused the Dragonfire around the Keep where Cersei was and the outer portion of the city. Leaving many areas safe for civilians. I'd imagine she has a pretty damn good view of the city from Drogon, so I'd think to be able to tell apart where the majority of the soldiers were versus the common people wouldn't have been too hard. She could've given her men orders to attempt evacuation and told the people if they leave they will be spared. She knew what Arya was capable of and that she was an expert assassin since she was able to kill the fucking Night King, so obviously, she could've sent her in on a mission to kill Cersei, which she was always planning to do (only the crumbling and burning city stopped her). The entire damned thing could've been avoided. Also, why not bring Messandei on Drogon with her, instead of putting her on a ship, that could be taken out in the war? She was her closest advisor and friend, if anyone should've been able to ride a dragon beside her it's Messandei. Even if you play a somewhat devil's advocate in Dany's favor, there are still so many ways this mess could've been averted, and even before King's Landing, so many was she could've inspired love and loyalty not fear. At her core, the only way she knows how to lead is through force. That's how she has done things from the beginning. She would've been better off to make her home in Essos and never sailed the Narrow Sea. If she hadn't however, the White Walkers might have taken over all of Westeros and Cersei would still be on the Iron Throne. For better or worse, she had a major role to play in shaping the world of Game of Thrones, and hopefully, her legacy will be remembered as more than simply a Mad Queen who lived by "Fire and Blood" but a complex and dynamic person trying to achieve what has never been done before and in the end was only human and is the prime example of how power can corrupt even the purest of hearts with the purest of intentions. This season overall has seemed a little rushed, and without spoiling anything, I am still very pleased with where the story has ended. I understand why many might not be but we weren't ever going to get a pleasant and happy, feel-good, fairytale ending that would've made everyone happy. If you think that this is one of those fantasy worlds, you haven't been paying attention to what Game of Thrones really is about.

except all the remaining stark offspring got a nearly perfect fairytale ending for their characters - Sansa a queen as she always wanted, Jon free of obligations and back to the one place he truly belonged, Arya l living out her 'I'm not a lady' fantasy of exploration and wonder and Bran.... if we assume he isn't a villain that manipulated everyone to get the throne then he's just going to be the perfect king - incorruptible, immune to traitors, 100% just. It's as fairy tale ending as can be for everyone except Daenerys (and even her ending was following the tragic villain trope down to a T) People that thought that GoT would end in such a boring/cliche way are those that haven't been paying attention.

Destshade I don’t see how it’s a fairy tale ending. They received good enough endings because they were honorable people, that didn’t lose sight of their goals. They didn’t become corrupt with power. Bran couldn’t be corrupted because he already would see the fruitily in it. Arya is a killer but even she has a code, and we’ve never seen her kill an innocent person. Jon is practical Eddar Stark reborn, when it comes to honor, he lives and dies by the way he was raised. Dany received the ending she did because she has be come just as much of a tyrant as Cersei. She had every opportunity to do the right thing, all the way to the moment those bells rang. She made that choice and actions have consequences. Just because she had good motivations doesn’t mean she’s above those consequences. Ignore your advisors, burn an entire city full of innocent civilians, and declare yourself the ultimate justice and that everyone else in the world doesn’t get to choose, that’s exactly what a dictatorship is and it got her a knife to the heart. Intentions mean absolutely nothing if your actions do not align with them.

@@MethuselahWinter See, that's the point! GoT used to be the show where intentions and moral compass didn't dictate you getting a happy ending - the very reason s1-4 were so hyped. I have 0 issues with Daenerys going mad queen and/or getting killed. It was done in a shitty way that ticked all the boring tragic villain trope boxes which sucked. And the starks get 'rewarded' for sticking to their 'code'? The starks were beloved early on because they were the honourable underdog that got shat on by reality/more clever foes. But they get to live happily ever after because they stuck to a high moral code? Wish Rob and Ned had a good moral code otherwise they wouldn't be dead - oh wait. It's fine to be satisfied with the ending, just realise it's a fairy-tale stark ending.

What happen to Daenerys is called Enantiodromia - from Carl Jung's psychological terminology. To avoid falling into Enantiodromia one must value both opposites - Exactly what she failed to do - being highly ideologically "right" and "good". Enantiodromia is psychological transformation that can be very quick. Because It is not about "gaining power" - but rather about switching polarities.

Great video...and yes I think this was what DD were going for....but I think Dany was unconscious of using class consciousness as a TOOL to mobilize the masses for power....as if she was a total power tripper...no... Her show arc in the beginning was painting her as having empathy, having the power to SAVE lives as she herself became stronger and wanted to take what was hers. She has earlier scenes of actually enjoying being around children, the lower classes, slaves, etc. She was painted as genuine...not pretending to like them like Margaery.

It is quite tragic, that Dany was seen as foreigner both in Essos and in Westeros. Somehow I do think that she was more Essosi than Westerosi. Yes, she was raised by Viserys, who taught her about the faith of the seven, Westerosi history and it’s customs. But she knew it only from him and sailors she met in the ports of free cities. She doesn’t dream about the chambers of Dragonstone, which she doesn’t even remember, she dreams about lemon trees and a house with the red doors. She is more familiar to Volantene red priests or Braavosi moon singers that septas and septons. Among Dothraki she wasn’t one of them, but in Qarth she was seen as a savage horselord. It would’ve been best for her if she married some Volantene noble or a Sealord of Braavos...

@@tupimpacaterpillar3516 we see the seeds, but they never sprout, as people say, foreshadowing is not character development, we needed to see Daenerys develop not suddenly snap into what she became. Diego Natan quoting another KZfaq video about foreshadowing not being character development does not make that fact lol We have watched her develop over seasons 1-8, she has always burnt her “enemies” or those who would oppose her when she has already conquered even when she didn’t have to . Those civilians in Kingslanding were no longer civilians in her eyes. She has chosen to let FEAR rule over love. She has said this. She has shown this countless times. She has always had a taste for taking what is hers with FIRE AND BLOOD! we saw this coming and we called it way back in 2014. Those who paid attention have seen this develop add to everything she has just gone through. She is in a lot of pain. Did you not watch a grieving mother named Catalyn Stark cut the throat of an innocent girl when her her child Robb Stark was killed? Well this is a Targaryen, she lashes out and grieves the same except this one has a dragon. GRRM has the advantage of fleshing out characters even more over hundreds of pages , a tv show doesn’t have the time or the luxury to do the exact same. Any further “development” on the TV show’s part would’ve made it boring and a show all about her ..the shock value in watching your hero be the villain all this time was essential! this is tv after all. The books will go at a slower pace just for you though. Enjoy the finale. I know I certainly will as I always have done. 🔥🔥🔥❄️❄️

One of if not THE best analysis videos regarding Dany's fall from grace. Seriously. Liked and subscribed. Can I just add, (in the books) the more Dany grew in power the more she would repeat her own inner mantra: if I look back, I am lost. So after the burning of kings landing, shes trying to justify it not only to others, but also herself. Shes come so far, lost too much to regret. I kept thinking about it during the finale. When she was pleading to Jon about remaking the world, I kept imagining that mantra playing on repeat in her head: If I look back, I am lost.

She should know it and let him be king and help him, rule together and they could continue the targaryen dynasty. But no, she thought that if she can't be the savior no one can. She helped to defeat the night king for the lands she wants to rule, she asked to jon to kneel. She didn't do enough to deserve the affect or respect of westerns. All the mistakes of his advisers was only that, the final desition is hers. A lot of times blaming others for her errors.

Micaela Froman when Danny is in Winterfell, after the battle, her perspective in my opinion of Jon being praised by Tormund and others leaves her feeling more alone, in fear. Just as people were chained in a cave ( Allegory of the Cave) afraid of their own shadow, Danny’s making this fear so real it’s all she can see the scene as. The cave is like a prison, the prison is the mind, but in this prison the locks are on the inside. We see what we see, if she believes she is alone and afraid, she is correct. I am not as talented in explaining things, if you know the story maybe you can help me say what I’m trying to say lol. It’s like she was in the cave only knowing this shadow, escaping the cave to see life is good outside the cave but could be better and wants to destroy all the caves and chains for the people who are too afraid to leave the comfort of their shadow (mind). To then go back into the cave mentally because she fed her fear that she’s always been alone, she can’t trust anyone, she doesn’t know Westeros, never really did other than what she has been told by her brother etc, to go down the mental spiral into the cave because she’s lost so much she’s conquered so much to lose kids (dragons, friends etc) to the point where she fed the fear and ended up where she started in chains (mentally, physically etc) knowing only that big shadow that may or may not be , a dance of faith, hopelessness, justice to injustice, to just fear. I don’t know if that even answers the question, but efforts were made and I hope you can pull something out of that. ❤️☮️

@@cellardoor4921 ' I am not as talented in explaining things'... um... if this is not some form of humblebragging , I can say you explained it quite well.

I'm so glad and grateful that I found this change! This breakdown is the best explanation of the fullest character of Dany. I'm going back to listen to all of your videos. Amazing work and thank you!! I'm a very happy new subscriber.

This was Incisive and very well explained! Thank you for the clear analysis, this was my interpretation too, only I don't think I'd have been able to express her tragic arc quite as well! This leaves me a little bit more content with the finale :D

Thank you! I've never liked her much since she started taking cities. She had this unrealistic ideology. The only thing that changed my mind was Varys putting trust in her. Because I actually trusted Varys's judgment.

Even though season 8 has certainly shortchanged GoT's potential, I believe the nuances in characters & circumstances are still present and shouldn't be outright dismissed in response to their lackluster execution.

It's like you read my mind and could feel what was in my heart. You've verbalised exactly my thoughts and feelings. GRRM said he wants us to grieve for his characters, I'm certainly doing that for Daenerys.
