I was walking down Howe St after work one day. I did know the royal couple were in Vancouver but busy working. All of the sudden the motorcade drove by, I stopped and watched while the Queen and Prince Phillip drove by. She was waving and smiling and I fell in love with her in that moment. All the troubles over the years and she showed up. She understands her role and loves her people and every decision is made with her subjects in mind. God save our queen.

Unanimous consent from the House of Commons, the Senate, and each of the provincial legislatures is required to change the constitution. A monarchy we are and a monarchy we will remain. Because all of them couldn't agree on the colour of the sky, let alone whether to remain a monarchy or become a Republic.

To change the United States Constitution requires two-thirds (2/3) majority of the House of Representatives (290 out of 435) and the Senate (67 out of 100) and three-fourths (38 out of 50) of the state legislatures. (One U.S. House member represents 754,574 American persons. One Canadian Member of Parliament represents 112,340 Canadian persons.) There have been 27 Amendments in the 241-year history of the U.S. Constitution. How many amendments have been made to the Canadian Constitution?
@Christopher_Vose
@Christopher_Vose 2 жыл бұрын
@@RaymondHng The United States doesn't require it to be unanimous like Canada does. There have been thirteen amendments in Canada since 1982, which may sound like a lot, but they've all been extremely limited in scope, dealing with matters that only affect a single province at a time, not the whole country. It's easy to get something passed when it is so minor that there is no opposition. It's much harder to get unanimous consent for something controversial. Many would say unanimously passing controversial legislation is impossible by definition.

Surely today's institutions and society should be encouraged to respond to today's needs - as the Monarchy has been and is doing. Rather than seek vengeance on them for the lesser comprehension and consciousness of their (and our ancestors) surely it's more worthy and useful for contemporary society to embrace 'old' institutions and encourage them out of history into the light of today. Humanity needs its institutions, needs them functioning and responding to us today. During the past six decades we've consigned much to the rubbish bin, much which could have been renovated and put into the service of humanity. The results of that are all around us. If it ain't broke don't fix it. As it is, the monarchy saves a lot of political shenanigans and it works. It could save us from the fate that right wing Republicans are trying to inflict on America. If it starts to reflect active oppression, of course it should be changed, but right now it offers a safety net that seems to currently be lacking in republics. It unites us with Australia, NZ., and many more like minded, peaceful countries. United we stand, divided we fall.

I don’t believe Trump could do that under the American system without breaking it. There’s no procedure in US law to become permanent dictator. Similarly here. So I don’t see how the monarchy prevents or impedes any “shenanigans”. Sorry. All it takes to stage a coup is the military or political will. That being said we aren’t talking about US-Canada, we’re talking about the monarchy. The monarchy doesn’t restore order during political unrest or oversee lawful military action. It is largely symbolic of a time where that was its role and it is no longer necessary. Human beings have not benefitted equally from the system of oppression over which it presided for hundreds of years.

Actually, the monarch is very tightly bonded to the Canadian Constitution, and there's a very big chance it will always remain here, even if, in fact, UK abolishes. Because according to article 41 of Canadian Constitutional Act 1982, major changes like any change to the royal figurehead, require unanimous consent from all 11 governments of Canada (the federal government and the 10 provincial governments). But having all 11 governments on the same page at same time isn't something we can expect to see so easily and quickly. So many political theorists are pretty content to call the removal of monarchy in Canada as, in fact, practically impossible.

The former President of the United States showcased to the world why and how the republican model fails as the best model of government. The insurrection at the US Capital, at the direction of America's head of state would never occur under a constitutional monarchy. The Canadian system of government, with a politically neutral head of state who is dedicated to serve the whole country - and not just the folks who voted for her - is the best model. As a Canadian I've never worried about a situation where a PM refuses to leave office - because it is Her Majesty's Canadian government, and not the PM's government.

After rhe repatriation of The Constitutional Act in 1982, Canada is a sovereign, fully independent nation with no legal connection to Great Britain. We do not owe or pay anything to Britain. Every time someone in the Royal family dies, there is talk about Canada ditching the monarchy, and becoming a republic, or a "free country." But it's not going to happen any time soon, and not that simple. But since we are much closer to the US of A than we are to the UK, we are distracted. Many Canadians want desperately to be like the United States, or even become a part of them. But other Canadians want an identity and to be distinct from Americans. Still others want to still remain part of the monarchy. We are quite divided.
