Dragon Quest III is one of the most popular JRPGs in Japan and is beloved by longtime fans of the series. Is the acclaim justified?
Dragon Quest III was developed by Chunsoft and released in 1988 by Enix for the Nintendo Famicom. It is the final entry in the Erdrick trilogy started by the first Dragon Quest (a.k.a. Dragon Warrior), the game that kickstarted the JRPG genre, and came to the West as Dragon Warrior III for the NES in 1992. It later got a Western re-release for various platforms as Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation.

What do you think of the fact that after DQIII, thief class has to waste a turn stealing from an enemy, instead the chance being automatic at random?

@@rpg_haven I would agree with you after playing some of DQVIII, DQIX and DQXI, where I wasted a turn or turns in unsuccessful attempt(s). They should've kept it DQIII system of thieving, maybe with higher chance of success rate.
@rpg_haven

@@whitewolf3051 That's why I tend to not use thieves much in JRPGs. Having to waste a turn to steal just makes battles take longer. I prefer when games put a twist on the thief class to make it viable in combat. Octopath Traveler had some good ideas, like letting your thief steal SP and share it with teammates, or giving them a chance to attack when stealing.

I don't like how many (not all, but still many) modern RPG's make the Priest/Cleric class a mere healer... In older RPG's such as this the Clerics had some of the strongest offensive spells, even stronger than Mages, except Clerics were limited in amount of Mana or Spell Uses (less ammo) Not to mention they were badass with a Mace on hand... Usually my favorite class to play

Will forever be my favorite Dragon Quest, DQ III. Love it so much, excellent video man discussion it’s legendary reputation on video games and RPGs. We need more of these out there like ClanOfTheGreyWolf, yours or Mr Gentleman’s Goat DQ 3 documentary video. Fantastic video man on the lasting legendary legacy of Dragon Quest 3 on RPGs and gaming history as a whole and its incredible impact even still today. I can’t freaking wait for DQ III HD-2D Remake coming out. Octopath really did sprite games and modern RPGs for classics as well justice. I never got into DQ3 so much until playing the GBC version and doing a solo run, no exp to share so you leveled up much faster. The HD-2D version is really going to be fantastic from what we've been shown and i got to try out Octopath Traveler 2 which makes me want to finish the first and is making me eager for more info on the upcoming HD-2D version of DQ3. I've taken to try some role playing and making characters from other games in the series as party members for DQ3 on Switch, similar to how i have done that in DQIX on the DS which really needs a release on a newer system.

I love most of the mainline Dragon Quest games. But out of all of them, DQ3 is the one I replayed the most. Maybe it's because I'm more of an chill & relaxing guy and I like to play shorter RPG'S. But the way this game does that, combining with alot of quality improvements over the first 2 games has and how expanded & unique the worlds, setting & adventure, it really is not just an smooth & cozy game, but it's pretty darn impressive how great the game is even after 30+ years it's released and remaked or remastered on other consoles. No matter what version I played, I'm always gonna have an good time with DQ3. Not to mentioned it's the most influential and important part of gaming history. So there's that.

One of my fondest memories was renting this for several weekends in a row when I was in middle school in the 90's and doing nothing but playing my Nintendo on my tiny little TV in my room all weekend until I beat it. I remember at one point that I bought a giant sub sandwich from Walmart and survived off cuts of it so I wouldn't have to waste time making myself food. The game actually still had its manual when I rented it which was thick like a book and contained a full walkthrough. Thems was good times, man, my first experience with a game so addictive and engrossing that the real world faded away. It's rare to find a game good enough to do that. I had such high hopes in the late 90's. MMORPGs were so good and getting better--ultima online, then everquest. I thought that, within a few more years, games would get so good that I could be engrossed like that all the time, whenever I wanted. It didn't work out, though. MMO's are hardly made now. Blizzard, which could be depended on for guaranteed amazing games, fell totally into decay. Even the newer jrpgs just somehow lost their magic. I find myself going back and playing the old games, the dragon warriors, the ultimate online free shards, classic EverQuest. What could have been, wasn't. The gaming singularity never came to pass. The good games are still the old ones. They persist like ghosts in strange corners of the internet.

@@rpg_haven Better give a bit of a warning, though. The Ultima games are OLD and not user-friendly. There are fan-patches to correct some of the problems, but don't be afraid to use a guide (if not, prepare to take a lot of notes). Another thing is that the Ultima games were ported to a lot of stuff, including various Japanese home computers. The most definitive versions are the PC ports with the fan patches (without, they used to be some of the worst). I recommend avoiding the console versions (except maybe the SMS port of Ultima 4). The Ultima games used to push computers to their limits back in the day and consoles (due to their radically different architecture) often couldn't run them well (or not without sacrifices). If you want more information about the Ultima series, just ask. I haven't finished most of them but they are fascinating games and I love talking about them.

I got into Dragon Quest from 11, but I’m going through the 1-3 HD remakes on the Switch. While I really liked 1 and 2, 3 was simply excellent. Even now in 2023, I think it’s a great game. I can only imagine how amazing people felt when it was first released if I’m this impressed even now. The story was great, gameplay good, superb music, and MANY quality of life improvements over the first 2. I REALLY enjoyed how it made everything connect to the first two games, as well. Playing the the Erdrick trilogy was a ton of fun, and 3 really was a fantastic way to end it. 9.5/10 in my book. I can’t wait to go through DQ4 and also for the HD remake for 3! Yes and no. Class customization is arguably the strongest point of this game, giving players a degree of class control that even future Dragon Quests couldn't match. Stylistically, Dragon Quest III is also a contender. At the same time, the in-game lore is a product of its time limited by only what the NES was able to contain (future Dragon Quest games excel on the front of narrative). I also was largely underwhelmed by the lack of difficulty / challenge compared to every other entry I've played through. The end-boss lack of a second phase makes the fight feel unearned, especially compared to the work needed for the first two games. Definitely appreciate the question and perspective, always love me some good Dragon Quest content :)

Half the classes phase out (thief, merchant, mage, martial artist), the sage is just a slower version of a mage that became a priest, and now modern games have more variety with all classses having skills. The Mobile and switch game took out pachisi and you don’t have fast forward auto battle and ff pixel remaster animations. Gadabout is a fun challenge (high luck may be set up to martial artist or merchant big money dig and then sage) and I miss the bunny girl lol. Personality is busted. Just make sexy/vamp chicks for stat growth exploits; no idea how women don’t say this is a girl power game.

I just gave up on this game after getting to around 1/3. The grinding is killing me. I feel like 90% of the time is spent on fights I don't want to fight. There are sequences where every 2 or 3 tiles there's an encounter and I just can't have fun anymore. Specially after reading the final boss requires insane hours of more grinding. Went for 3 after finishing 1 hoping they improved on this aspect, but somehow they made it worst! Have massive respect for what they acomplished historicaly, but I guess it's not the game for me right now. I'm still hoping to try 4, 5 and 8 on mobile, and finally 11 on pc. Fingers cross it gets better 🤞

It's pretty old-school and barebones for sure. Sounds like you'll probably enjoy 4 and 5 more since they offer more variety. 4 switches up characters a lot, and 5 lets you capture and use monsters. They also give you more to explore and do and aren't as grindy. Still pretty grindy, though.

I can only agree with all the praise it gets - in general and in this video. I had no idea the game sold a million units on release day. Nuts! When I played this, I started out with a Gadabout and turning him into a Merchant. I thought the high luck stat would grant me cash that way. That strat really didn't pay off, and I wasted the Gadabout's advantage of being able to turn into a Sage. Oh well. Hope you'll enjoy the next Dragon Quest titles, personally I love IV through VI the most.

Man, you got 2 Books of Satori? That's insanely lucky Maybe the remakes lower the drop rate, but in the original game they were a 1 in 1000 drop from a certain enemy, iirc Anyways, nice video, enjoyed )

The mobile version seems to be based on the Super Famicom remake rather than the game boy color version. It lacks animated enemies, though

You're gonna love the 4th, if you haven't played it, and if you did, i'm sure you did love it. the 5th, has time travel. One of my top subjects in any game or story. But the 3rd still ranks as my best DQ game. I recommend you the 8th, as (SPOILER) Empyrea appeared in another DQ under a different name. Take a guess.

I'd say why you mentioned about Halo is true in the US, but not so much in the West. Aside from maybe the UK, It is not as popular in Europe or America south of Texas.

The answer to the question initially posed? "Yes". Draqon Quest 3 is one of the best RPG's on the Nintendo. It is also better than most RPG's on the SNES. Sorry, I won't follow this new trend of naming these "JRPG's". The worst thing to ever happen to Enix was Square. I was a Final Fantasy fan in the early '90s but the series is just crap compared to Dragon Quest. The last good Final Fantasy was 6.

Say RPG, not JRPG. JRPG is offensive to Japanese developers because of the unfair stigma RPGs from Japan had back in the day.
