Does God exist? The Buddha's Answer.
Indeed, the question "Does God exist?" is one of the oldest and most profound inquiries in the human mind. Throughout history, from ancient Greek philosophers to the thinkers of ancient Sumerian civilization, humans have ceaselessly pondered and sought answers to this mystery. But, is the question of God, or a supreme being, merely a product of human thought? We not only inquire about His existence but also about the nature and origins of faith. Even in the Upanishads of India, where spiritual and cosmic knowledge is deeply explored, the question of God is not always explicitly mentioned. This leads us to wonder whether the concept of God is a later invention. What constitutes the entity we call God-an omnipotent, omniscient, eternal, compassionate, just, and wholly good force?
One day someone asked the Buddha,
- Does God exist?
- The Buddha looked at the person and said, "Yes."
The person could not believe their ears, because it is commonly said that the Buddha did not believe in God. So why would he answer like that?
At that time, Ananda, one of Buddha's closest disciples, was present. He too was shocked. The Buddha had never asserted such a thing, without qualifiers or conditions. Throughout his life, he had strongly critiqued any notion of God.
There was an agreement between Buddha and Ananda. Ananda was the Buddha's cousin. Before becoming Buddha's disciple, Ananda had made a condition, "You must promise me a few things. Right now, I am your cousin. But when I become your disciple, I will have to obey you. But right now I can make requests, and you must comply."
The Buddha said, "I know you well. You will not ask for anything I cannot do. Please speak."
Ananda said: "It's nothing much. Just a few small requests. One is that every night, before going to sleep, if I ask you something, you must answer. You cannot say, 'I am too tired today from interacting and talking with so many people...' You will have to answer me. During the day I will not ask, and I will not disturb you. But I am not yet enlightened, occasionally I will have some questions."
The Buddha replied, "I accept."
Ananda continued, "You will not send me far away. I will always be by your side, and care for you until death. You will not order me, 'Go and spread my teachings,' as though you sent others. You will not send me anywhere."
The Buddha said, "Okay. That is not a problem."
Ananda added, "If I bring someone to meet you, then no matter what time, even at midnight, you must meet that person. These are the few special favors you must grant me."
The Buddha said, "I agree to all, for I know you well. You will not take advantage of these..."
So when Ananda was stunned by the Buddha claiming there is a God.
But he could not ask amidst a crowd. That afternoon someone else came and asked the Buddha the same question,
- Does God exist?
- He answered, "No. There is no God."
The situation became complicated. Ananda was utterly confused but endured.
That evening another person came to the Buddha,
- Can you tell me about God?
The Buddha looked at him, closed his eyes, and was completely silent. The other person also closed his eyes. Both were silent for half an hour. Before leaving, the person bowed down to kiss the Buddha's feet and said,
"Thank you for your teaching."

What else do we need in life besides freedom from suffering? According to Buddha, the wisest person in the universe is the one who seeks liberation from suffering. He believed that all universal questions are embedded within our sufferings. Buddha posed a critical question: If you believe that God created the world, why don't you ask God why He created suffering instead of a world of eternal happiness? If God is the creator, then why did He create murderers, cheaters, rapists, liars, the poor and the rich, birth and death? If God has the power of forgiveness, why not create a world of perpetual happiness? Why does the creator allow the drying of tears, crying, and the misery of sentient beings? Buddha considered such beliefs to be blind faith and provided universal answers through logic and reason. Buddha taught that the universe operates under the law of cause and effect. He advised against blind faith, even in his own teachings. Buddha said that God will not come to save us when we are suffering or dying, and there is no guarantee that God will come after life. Buddhism offers teachings that allow us to realize the truth before we die. Therefore, it is worthwhile to follow these teachings, as they help us understand the truth of life before our death.

@sovanhap Mom. You’ve highlighted an important point about the Buddha’s teachings. The Buddha indeed emphasized the importance of personal experience and understanding in the search for spiritual truth. He encouraged his followers to rely on their own insights rather than accepting teachings, including his own, without personal verification. This principle is encapsulated in the Kalama Sutta, where the Buddha advises not to accept anything on mere hearsay but to test it against one’s experience and reason. This approach empowers individuals to develop their wisdom and understanding, fostering a sense of personal responsibility in their spiritual journey. If you have more thoughts on how this has influenced your own beliefs or practices, or if there are other teachings from the Buddha that you find particularly meaningful, I’d love to hear more. Let’s continue to explore these profound teachings together.

I think what he’s trying to convince me to believe is that the self-peace within ourselves is the truth way in order to speak to the God. In Buddhism teaching, Buddha claims that there is no god in straight meaning. But he seems hide something which is the true main source of spiritual power.

@@namah4399 Donald S. It should transcend a personal God and avoid dogmas and theology. Covering both the natural and the spiritual, it should be based on a religious sense arising from the experience of all things, natural and spiritual as a meaningful unity. If there is any religion that would cope with modern scientific needs, it would be Buddhism.” Einstein appears to have occasionally made passing references to the Buddha in conversation. Yet something compelled someone to concoct this statement and attribute it to Einstein, the Buddha of the Modern Age. And since the time when Einstein didn’t say this, intimations of deep connections between Buddhism and science have continued, right up until today.

Please don't try to complicate and confuse Lord Buddha's doctrine, As it's mentioned that there are 31 realms of existence, in our Galaxy. 1.The 4 Hells 2.Human Realm 3.Six Celestial Realms 4.Twenty Supermundane Brahma Realms. Among the Celestial Realms you find the Ruler Gods and the less powerful Gods as well. Lord Buddha never denied the existence of Gods(Plural). And all beings have the potential ability to become a God head or even Attain Buddhahood by accumulating an enormous amount of Merit(Wholesome Karma) Also Karma(Commitments) is your creator. Wholesome Karma gives you rewards in heaven and the Bad Karma will drag you down to Hell. And therefore Buddhist don't blame God when evil things happen, you accept the misery as a result of your own past Karma. And distorting Buddhist Doctrine is very Bad Karma. May all beings be well and Happy!

A segment from 'Saved by the Light of the Buddha Within'... My new understandings of what many call 'God -The Holy Spirit' - resulting from some of the extraordinary ongoing after-effects relating to my NDE, when I was struck by lightning during September 1970. Myoho-Renge-Kyo represents the identity of what some scientists are now referring to as the unified field of consciousnesses. In other words, it’s the essence of all existence and non-existence - the ultimate creative force behind planets, stars, nebulae, people, animals, trees, fish, birds, and all phenomena, manifest or latent. All matter and intelligence are simply waves or ripples manifesting to and from this core source. Consciousness (enlightenment) is itself the actual creator of everything that exists now, ever existed in the past, or will exist in the future - right down to the minutest particles of dust - each being an individual ripple or wave. The big difference between chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo and most other conventional prayers is that instead of depending on a ‘middleman’ to connect us to our state of inner enlightenment, we’re able to do it ourselves. That’s because chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo allows us to tap directly into our enlightened state by way of this self-produced sound vibration. ‘Who or What Is God?’ If we compare the concept of God being a separate entity that is forever watching down on us, to the teachings of Nichiren, it makes more sense to me that the true omnipotence, omniscience and omnipresence of what most people perceive to be God, is the fantastic state of enlightenment that exists within each of us. Some say that God is an entity that’s beyond physical matter - I think that the vast amount of information continuously being conveyed via electromagnetic waves in today’s world gives us proof of how an invisible state of God could indeed exist. For example, it’s now widely known that specific data relayed by way of electromagnetic waves has the potential to help bring about extraordinary and powerful effects - including an instant global awareness of something or a mass emotional reaction. It’s also common knowledge that these invisible waves can easily be used to detonate a bomb or to enable NASA to control the movements of a robot as far away as the Moon or Mars - none of which is possible without a receiver to decode the information that’s being transmitted. Without the receiver, the data would remain impotent. In a very similar way, we need to have our own ‘receiver’ switched on so that we can activate a clear and precise understanding of our own life, all other life and what everything else in existence is. Chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo each day helps us to achieve this because it allows us to reach the core of our enlightenment and keep it switched on. That’s because Myoho-Renge-Kyo represents the identity of what scientists now refer to as the unified field of consciousnesses. To break it down - Myoho represents the Law of manifestation and latency (Nature) and consists of two alternating states. For example, the state of Myo is where everything in life that’s not obvious to us exists - including our stored memories when we’re not thinking about them - our hidden potential and inner emotions whenever they’re dormant - our desires, our fears, our wisdom, happiness, karma - and more importantly, our enlightenment. The other state, ho, is where everything in Life exists whenever it becomes evident to us, such as when a thought pops up from within our memory - whenever we experience or express our emotions - or whenever a good or bad cause manifests as an effect from our karma. When anything becomes apparent, it merely means that it’s come out of the state of Myo (dormancy/latency) and into a state of ho (manifestation). It’s the difference between consciousness and unconsciousness, being awake or asleep, or knowing and not knowing. The second law - Renge - Ren meaning cause and ge meaning effect, governs and controls the functions of Myoho - these two laws of Myoho and Renge, not only function together simultaneously but also underlies all spiritual and physical existence. The final and third part of the tri-combination - Kyo, is the Law that allows Myoho to integrate with Renge - or vice versa. It’s the great, invisible thread of energy that fuses and connects all Life and matter - as well as the past, present and future. It’s also sometimes termed the Universal Law of Communication - perhaps it could even be compared with the string theory that many scientists now suspect exists. Just as the cells in our body, our thoughts, feelings and everything else is continually fluctuating within us - all that exists in the world around us and beyond is also in a constant state of flux - constantly controlled by these three fundamental laws. In fact, more things are going back and forth between the two states of Myo and ho in a single moment than it would ever be possible to calculate or describe. And it doesn’t matter how big or small, famous or trivial anything or anyone may appear to be, everything that’s ever existed in the past, exists now or will exist in the future, exists only because of the workings of the Laws ‘Myoho-Renge-Kyo’ - the basis of the four fundamental forces, and if they didn’t function, neither we nor anything else could go on existing. That’s because all forms of existence, including the seasons, day, night, birth, death and so on, are moving forward in an ongoing flow of continuation - rhythmically reverting back and forth between the two fundamental states of Myo and ho in absolute accordance with Renge - and by way of Kyo. Even stars are dying and being reborn under the workings of what the combination ‘Myoho-Renge-Kyo’ represents. Nam, or Namu - which mean the same thing, are vibrational passwords or keys that allow us to reach deep into our life and fuse with or become one with ‘Myoho-Renge-Kyo’. On a more personal level, nothing ever happens by chance or coincidence, it’s the causes that we’ve made in our past, or are presently making, that determine how these laws function uniquely in each of our lives - as well as the environment from moment to moment. By facing east, in harmony with the direction that the Earth is spinning, and chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo for a minimum of, let’s say, ten minutes daily to start with, any of us can experience actual proof of its positive effects in our lives - even if it only makes us feel good on the inside, there will be a definite positive effect. That’s because we’re able to pierce through the thickest layers of our karma and activate our inherent Buddha Nature (our enlightened state). By so doing, we’re then able to bring forth the wisdom and good fortune that we need to challenge, overcome and change our adverse circumstances - turn them into positive ones - or manifest and gain even greater fulfilment in our daily lives from our accumulated good karma. This also allows us to bring forth the wisdom that can free us from the ignorance and stupidity that’s preventing us from accepting and being proud of the person that we indeed are - regardless of our race, colour, gender or sexuality. We’re also able to see and understand our circumstances and the environment far more clearly, as well as attract and connect with any needed external beneficial forces and situations. As I’ve already mentioned, everything is subject to the law of Cause and Effect - the ‘actual-proof-strength’ resulting from chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo always depends on our determination, sincerity and dedication. For example, the levels of difference could be compared to making a sound on a piano, creating a melody, producing a great song, and so on. Something else that’s very important to always respect and acknowledge is that the Law (or if you prefer God) is in everyone and everything. NB: There are frightening and disturbing sounds, and there are tranquil and relaxing sounds. It’s the emotional result of any noise or sound that can trigger off a mood or even instantly change one. When chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo each day, we are producing a sound vibration that’s the password to our true inner-self - this soon becomes apparent when you start reassessing your views on various things - such as your fears and desires etc. The best way to get the desired result when chanting is not to view things conventionally - rather than reaching out to an external source, we need to reach into our own lives and bring our needs and desires to fruition from within - including the good fortune and strength to achieve any help that we may need. Chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo also reaches out externally and draws us towards, or draws towards us, what we need to make us happy from our environment. For example, it helps us to be in the right place at the right time - to make better choices and decisions and so forth. We need to think of it as a seed within us that we’re watering and bringing sunshine to for it to grow, blossom and bring forth fruit or flowers. It’s also important to understand that everything we need in life, including the answer to every question and the potential to achieve every dream, already exists within us.

Thousands of years before Buddha appears, India is the religious centre of the world. The yogi practitioners in India were the first people to see heavens in their deep meditation. That is how the world came to know about the existence of heaven. But yogis thought their attainment to heaven is the Nirvana which is not the case. Many yogis fell back into human realm and some even descended into hell after their meditative power diminished. Their anger and their desire to know the truth about life and our universe caused the Buddha to response to their request. That was the reason why Buddha appears in India and not elsewhere. Buddha told us that there are three stages of heaven with 28 levels. The first stage has 6 levels. It's called Heaven of Desires. The second stage has 18 levels. It's called Heaven of Form. The third stage and the highest has 4 levels. It's called Heaven of Formless. Gods exist in the first stage of heaven of desires. Gods also have very powerful supernatural abilities like the Buddhas. The different between Buddhas and gods, Buddha's characters, behaviour and thoughts are flawless. Whereas, God's characters, behaviour and thoughts are not. Buddha's Teachings should be introduced as an education, not a religion. Using spiritual penetrations and psychic abilities to attract people to believe in Buddhism is not the proper teachings and only serves to mislead others. 🙏🙏🙏Amituofo

If the content in the video referenced a particular viewpoint about the existence of God in Buddhism, it’s likely derived from interpretative discussions rather than a direct sutta, as the Buddha traditionally refrained from conclusive statements about God’s existence in the canonical texts. However, topics like these are often explored in more interpretative or philosophical discussions surrounding Buddhist teachings, such as commentaries and later writings. I apologize for any confusion and will ensure that future videos provide clearer citations or explain when the content is more of a general interpretation rather than directly from specific suttas. If you are looking for in-depth study, I recommend looking into the ‘Brahmajala Sutta’ where the Buddha discusses various views held by other spiritual teachers of his time, which might touch on themes related to concepts of a creator god indirectly. Please let me know if you would like more specific recommendations or further clarification on any points discussed.

@EgoPodcastenglish There are many suttas that talk about Gods, the nature and character of Gods and there are a few that talk about the Brahma (God) who claims to be the original true God eternal creator it fact Buddha talked to him. Then another sutta that discusses why an all powerful God could not be the creator of a world full of suffering. Your video is partly true, partly made up and falsely represents how the Buddha taught and what was said by him regarding a creation and the nature of God(s). If you think it is what the Buddha might have said then say that, but if there is no recorded event of this happening with Ananda you can't just make it up.

Sakyamuni Buddha actually says a Yes and a No! Don't changes this facts for non Buddhist teachings! The name God's is not the creator of the infinite consciousness and space or time! It is under the sub hierarchy of the creations itself! No God's can proclaimed the entire consciousness of creations! The creations itself have no beginning or ending! Is infinite multidimensional of consciousness! This creations created consciousness of intelligences and thereafter throughout Eons of evolutions and mastered manifestation to becomes a higher entities and its higher created realms and dimensions too! The category of the term Gods falls into the category of the the 6 reincarnations cycles of Samsara! They created heavens lives in heavens! While the tenths of thousands perfected Buddhas stays mainly in infinite Purelands and some in heavens too! They are free from the cycles of Samsara! The category of God's falls short belows Bodhisattvas and Bodhisattvas falls short below the Perfected Buddhas!

My understanding is that Buddha himself does not know if God exist. Hence, he says no to the believer, yes to the non-believer and silence to the truth seeker as he cannot definitely say yes or no and leaves it to the person to find out what he believes in. He is wise in his answer.

He knew that there is no creator God who is responsible for creating Life and the Universe! He knew that Life was not created, did not in the past not exist and was suddenly willed into existence by a Supreme Being. Awakening allowed him to see that Life is, as he expressed it, " Unborn, Unbecome, Not Made, Uncompounded"! He also said that any attempt to conceptually describe the Primal will be wrong because there is nothing like it which could be used to paint a mental picture of it. Any God or Gods mentioned in some Buddhist literature as far as I am concerned are mythical fantastications based on Devas who are creatures because of their good karma are temporarily reborn with beautiful bodies in one of several Heavens and who, compared to humans, have magical powers but in a Heaven that is the norm. Hindu Devas are not like Buddhist Devas because that word in Hinduism refers to a creature who can be good or bad, can cause trouble for humans or help them. The report that he was asked if there is a God and said if any exist they will hold that position until their good karma is expired at which time they will die and move on to their next rebirth may be true but I'm not sure because so many things he supposedly said are not true but here in my opinion is the most important statement he ever made and it is; "To cease to do evil, to do good, to meditate, this is what I teach"!

Thank you for sharing your perspective, Gosavi's Jawahar Khadi Cottons. Your description of God as paramatma, an infinite amount of energy, aligns with certain philosophical and spiritual views found in various traditions, including aspects of Hinduism. This concept of a universal energy or consciousness from which the universe evolves is indeed a profound and beautiful way to understand the nature of existence. In Buddhism, while the focus isn't on a creator god, the teachings do explore the nature of reality and existence through concepts like interdependence and emptiness, emphasizing how all phenomena arise and cease through conditions without an inherent, independent essence. The notion of chaitanya or adishakti you mentioned as vital energy or divine force is also a fascinating area for discussion, showing how different spiritual paths use various frameworks to describe the unseen forces at play in the universe. If you're interested in discussing how these concepts compare or intersect with Buddhist teachings, especially in terms of understanding the fundamental nature of reality and existence, I’d be more than happy to continue this conversation. It's enriching to explore how diverse spiritual traditions interpret these profound truths.

It really does not matter whether one belives that God exists or does not believe so. Both are the obverse & reverse of the same coin. What matters is the urge to realize of the Ultimate Truth, in which event if God is the Truth then He will be revealed. This, as I understand is what Buddha showed and pointed out to. Mere beliefs are just a mental, psychological act.

I have a question. What does it feel like to believe in the existence of a god? I am Japanese. In my experience, many Japanese people are non-religious. Funerals are typically conducted in a Buddhist style, but I have never personally adopted a religion and I am curious about what it feels like. In Japan, there are many shrines, and each is believed to house a deity, but this doesn't feel like religion to me. It seems different from religious faith. For example: Ohtani: "I heard you can eat a Big Mac at McDonald's!" Betts: "I want to go to KFC because you can get fried chicken there!" Freeman: "Let's go to Starbucks because you can drink a Frappuccino there." It's like this. Praying to the deity at that shrine gives you a sense of temporarily enhancing your power. In reality, it doesn't actually enhance your power. It feels like getting a temporary power-up effect in a game. However, it doesn't mean you have faith in that deity. It's like going to McDonald's to eat a hamburger or to Starbucks to drink a Frappuccino. Is this Japanese culture considered religion? Or is it not religion? Can someone explain this to me? I'm not joking. I'm seriously asking this question.

As far as my reading goes, BUDDHA never said that GOD doesn't exist. He just refused to discuss GOD---- BUDDHA was interested in "relief of human suffering, due to NARCISSTISM". BUDDHA 's 4 NOBLE TRUTHS have nothing to do with GOD. BUT, but he did believe in RE-INCARNATION ( because he was in HINDU CULTURE ,BELIEVING IN RE-INCARNATION . So this faith in RE-INCARNATION makes BUDDHISM a religion as well. Buddha may not discuss GOD --- but believed definitely in RE-INCARNATION.

It’s also important to understand that everything we need in life, including the answer to every question and the potential to achieve every dream, already exists within us.

for four thousand years we been going on and on and on about god. and still nothing has ever surfaced except claims here n there about some divine incidents as they have claimed. if god is that powerful, why havent we received anything as proof ? something that has no answer will remain unanswered forever. and also has anyone ever wondered what is GOD ?

Dharma is not Religion: Dharmas (Bauddha, Vaishnav, Shaiva, Jain, Tantra, Sikh, etc.) are about seeking truth ‘Satya’ and disciplines of inner progress ‘Yoga.’ Dharmas overlap, learn from each other, and don’t fight. Hinduism is the collection of all the Dharmas evolved in our region. It is a geographical definition, not doctrinal. The central theme of Dharmas is inner and outer Peace. Dharmas are different spiritual path \ marga \ tao \ways \ disciplines. We, Hindus, go to and pray in all temples \monasteries \ gurudwaras. It is up to an individual to be interested or practice any, all, or none; or specialize in any particular path. Religions (Christianity, Islam, Communism, Fascism, etc.) are brainwashing systems for social control. Each claims exclusive truth, all others evil, and assumes divine right and duty to attack others. Violence is the central theme. Religions are sets of doctrines to believe and sets of commandments to obey, without any questions. This is militarization of society which is the totalitarian control of individuals leading to 'we vs. they', 'we are superior', ‘misogyny’, and 'violence.’

The creator or known as GOD, with the capability to craft planets, system, universe, time space, is nothing but just engineering and physics, until he found the references to boundary, this boundary is where the crafting matters flow in from boundary, living and non living matters, whereby a single complex symbol at the board, is able to let him create human in his image, he noticed something else. He tried to duplicate a symbolic non-existence man in his image, which is exceed his spirit crafting capability by referring to that. Anyway, something greater than god, perished multiple times, recorded in bible as well, and tried to be duplicated by him, so what actually happened? Why the design whole universe looked like reviving a large tomb? Worship and religion perhaps is the best solution then.

God is defined as a supreme creator which doesn't exist. However there are countless of unseen beings or higher beings which we don't understand. If none of us will give freewill to anybody to harm anybody particularly our loved ones. Neither would God if he exists. Otherwise we are more wiser than God. Therefore God should worship us instead of the other way around.

Isn't it dumb if peoples still asking this question in these modern era with science to prove if the scriptures are true or false. The real issue is, there is massive amount of peoples choose not to take up the responsibility to believe in God because they see don't fit in to the lifestyle and where the real world is heading. It's not the matter even if God axist or not, most of us knows by now the possibility of this could happen if they read enough books.. but for the ordinary ones they tend not to care too much so this is the waste of life.

Thank you for sharing your belief, Cathy. In discussions about spirituality and religion, it’s essential to recognize and respect the diverse views that people hold. While Buddhist teachings traditionally do not focus on the concept of a creator God as found in monotheistic religions, they certainly respect the spiritual experiences and beliefs of all individuals. If you’re interested in exploring how different spiritual traditions address this question, or if you’d like to share more about your views, we’d be glad to hear from you. Understanding and discussing these differences can enrich our perspectives and help us appreciate the varied ways people find meaning and purpose in life.
