Where Do People Come From and Where Do They Go? Buddhist Teachings
#buddha #buddhisminenglish #reincarnation #rebirth
There can be three answers to this question. Those who believe in one or more deities often argue that before being created, humans did not exist, and then humans were brought into the world by the will of a deity. That person lives their life, and after death, depending on what they believed or how they acted in life, will reside forever in heaven or perpetually in hell.
Others, the scientists, believe that each individual comes into existence at conception due to natural causes, lives their life, then dies, ceasing to exist.
Buddhism does not accept either of these explanations. The first interpretation raises many ethical issues. The most important thing to remember is that life is not a business transaction. If a wholly benevolent deity truly created each of us, it is hard to explain why so many are born with terrible deformities, or why so many infants must die in the womb or shortly after birth. Another issue with the deity explanation is the concept of one suffering eternally in hell for deeds done in merely 60 or 70 years on Earth, which seems vastly unfair. Sixty or seventy years without faith or poor morals does not deserve eternal punishment. Similarly, sixty or seventy years of a morally good life seems too short a time for eternal happiness in heaven.

Catechism of The Buddhist Doctrine Primarily in Buddhism it is compulsory to accept Rebirth & KARMA (Wholesome or Unwholesome Commitments) though only voluntarily one should accept The Doctrine, purely through conviction. after accepting Buddhism purely through conviction. It’s mandatory to make 5 sacrifices or observe Five Precepts as a Layman, 1. To Abstain from Killing, Harming or Endangering any kind of living beings. 2. To Abstain from Stealing or taking what is not granted to you. Pilferage, Cheat ,Plunder, Pillage, Loot, etc; 3. To Abstain from Committing Adultery or illegal sexual misbehavior. 4. To Abstain from Falsehood, Pretend, Mendacity, Lying or Deceit. It’s v.important for Buddhists to refrain from falsehood as they seek the Truth. 5. To Abstain from Intoxication or Narcotic Drug Abuse. Standards are of course higher and much more austere for a Novice Monk (like the Poverty vow, Strict Celibate living etc;) Unlike in all other major religions including Hinduism, Buddhism doesn’t accept a creator God but instead Evolution, according to the Commitment or KARMIC Force which enables the ideal situation. Eg; Wholesome Commitments will deliver pleasant or desirable births in a Celestial or Human birth or vis-à-vis in the case of Unwholesome Commitments. For whatsoever a man sows, that shall he also reap. (New Testament - Saint Paul) A rather short and precise emphasis would be, mentally and physical commitment or action(volition,consciously acting by purpose). Therefore what happens accidentally(unintentionally) doesn't create a payback situation.Although KARMIC reaction may not take place quite instantly but for surely in due time-course it will start paying retribution to the owner of it(Eg; if one plants an apple seed you wouldn't get apples over night, but certainly for sure it will give results at its fruition). It's mind foremost. Though Envy, Jealousy, Aversion, Covetousness and Ignorance are all evil and doesn't involve any physical action but it will definitely have a KARMIC reaction in a miserable realm as they are mindful commitments(intention) . Lord BUDDHA has mentioned the type of KARMA and its reactions are infinite. This subject of KARMA is a vast subject in Buddhism with lots of elaborations like the Cause & Effect Theory, · Dependent on the main cause ignorance , volitional (KARMIC) formations evolves. · Dependent on volitional formations, consciousness evolves. · Dependent on consciousness, mentality-materially(Mind & Matter) evolves. · Dependent on mentality-materially, the six sense faculties(Eye,Nose,Tongue,Ear,Body & Brain ) evolves . · Dependent on the the six sense faculties, contact evolves. · Dependent on contact, sensual feeling evolves. · Dependent on Sensual feeling, craving evolves. · Dependent on craving, clinging evolves. · Dependent on clinging, existence( Rebirth in*31 Realms ) evolves. · Dependent on existence, birth evolves. · Dependent on existence,decay,senility death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief and despair evolves * According to Buddhist Cosmology,Lord BUDDHA has mentioned that the number of Galaxies run in to infinity in 625 B.C, a Galaxy comprises of 31 realms of existence and they are, the 4 miserable Hell Realms (1.Animal 2.Goblin or the Hungry Ghostly Forms 3. Extra Gigantic Miserable Ghostly Forms 4. The 136 Hell realms full of torture found beneath the earth.) 1 Human realm, 6 Celestial Heavenly realms, 20 Celestial Brahma realms(Super-mundane). Also Rebirth is quite different to Reincarnation which means the same person appearing again. According to Buddhism it’s NOT THE SAME or NOT ANOTHER Eg; Suppose Julius Caesar reborn currently as Prince Charles, he’s not Julius Caesar now ,but no one else either but a generation of the Cycle of Birth & Death of a being. We're driven by Greed, Hatred and Delusion the 3 evil KARMIC roots embedded in our minds which doesn't need any nourishment, the downward currents fueling our *cycle of birth and death (*SAMSARIC SOJOURN) which causes immense suffering to us. So the perfect solution or the antidote prescribed by The BUDDHA, is to engage our selves in acts of 1.Generosity, to nullify Greed. 2.To Contemplate on Loving Kindnesses and especially to Forgive one's Adversaries and Treacherous Enemies, this technique is to curtail the evil root of Anger, Animosity or Hatred and Jealousy which is embedded in our minds. 3.Finally to develop Wisdom through sheer Contemplative Meditation to make Ignorance obsolete. Ignorance which is the main reason for the existence of both other evil aspects Greed and Hatred. Both Greed and Hatred can't exist without Ignorance. Lord BUDDHA has taught us how to liberate our selves by contemplating on reality of the 1.The NATURAL PHENOMENON OF IMPERMANENCE(both Mind & Matter, arise to pass away or Appear to Disappear) 2.The NATURAL PHENOMENON OF SUFFERING(due to 1st phenomenon of Impermanence) 3. The NATURAL PHENOMENON OF SOULLESSNESS (non continuity or non eternity.This is the most subtle phenomenon) and this technique of meditation is known as The INSIGHT MEDITATION which enables you to exterminate the KARMIC FORCE and would nullify your future existence in any of the *31 realms of existence in this Galaxy or in any other Galaxy (Lord BUDDHA has mentioned that the number of Galaxies run in to infinity in 625 B.C) a Galaxy comprises of * 31 realms of existence and they are, the 4 miserable Hell Realms (1.Animal 2.Goblin or the Hungry Ghostly Forms 3. Extra Gigantic Miserable Ghostly Forms 4. The 136 Hell realms full of torture found beneath the earth.) 1 Human realm, 6 Celestial Heavenly realms, 20 Celestial Brahma realms(Super-mundane). And INSIGHT MEDITATION leads you to the emancipation of all suffering or NIRVANA( cessation of Birth, Decay, Illness,Death Lamentation and all forms of Suffering) Wherever Birth takes place it isn't NIRVANA and in NIRVANA there's no Birth taking place any more. "Transient alas are all component things Subject are they to birth & then decay Having gained birth to death the life flux swings Bliss truly dawns when unrest dies away" -The Buddha(Light of Asia. by Sir Edwin Arnold)

*The Origin of the Universe and Life* The universe and life appear at the same time. When a mind appears the universe and life appear. Everything in the universe and the origin of our lives thus begin. Without a mind, universe and life does not exist. When there is a mind, time and space will exist. Time and space are initialized when thoughts begin to vibrate or move. Neither time nor space exist when there is no mind. Existence of movement is called delusion. When self-nature moves, this mind is called Alaya. Alaya can give rise to myriad of phenomena. This original movement is not that serious because in it there is no attachment nor discrimination. All unfortunate conditions appear when there is attachments and discriminations. Fabulous environment will appear when one has no attachment and discrimination. Pure Land appears when there is no discrimination and attachment. Amituofo 🙏🙏🙏

@EgoPodcastenglish
@EgoPodcastenglish Ай бұрын
Thank you for this insightful reminder. Indeed, the Buddha emphasized the importance of not clinging to words and language as absolute truths, but rather using them as tools to access deeper wisdom. His teachings encourage us to look beyond the superficial meanings and to reflect on our own experiences and the true nature of our minds. This approach helps us understand that while teachings are expressed through language, the ultimate truths they point to are beyond words and must be experienced directly. This is a fundamental aspect of the practice of meditation and mindfulness, where direct observation and awareness of the mind and its patterns can lead to profound insights and liberation. If you have personal experiences or additional thoughts on how to effectively practice this reflection on the true mind, I would love to continue this discussion.

The world population is not fixed, by the end of 18th century there were approximately 1 billion people living in the planet earth. Today the world population is more than 7 billion. If consciousness is transmitted from one body to another then how does this explanation remain consistent with population growth?
@EgoPodcastenglish
@EgoPodcastenglish Ай бұрын
Thank you for your intriguing question! This topic has been a subject of discussion among scholars and practitioners within Buddhism and other religions that hold a belief in reincarnation. Your question touches on the assumption that if the number of beings were fixed, then population growth could indeed pose a contradiction to the idea of rebirth. However, from a Buddhist perspective, consciousness or the stream of continuity (mindstream) is not limited to human form alone. Buddhism teaches about the existence of numerous realms of existence, as outlined in the doctrine of the Six Realms (Deva, Asura, Human, Animal, Ghost, and Hell). These realms are part of what is known as ‘samsara’, the cycle of rebirth and suffering. Buddhist texts, such as the Majjhima Nikaya in the Pali Canon, discuss how beings can transmigrate between different realms based on their karma. This means that a being in one realm, due to their actions (karma), might be reborn in another realm. As venerable teacher and scholar Walpola Rahula states in his book, “What the Buddha Taught,” the increase in human population can be seen as a transformation where beings from other realms, such as the animal or spirit realms, are reborn as humans. Furthermore, the idea of a growing human population does not necessarily conflict with Buddhist teachings because there is no specific doctrine stating that the number of conscious beings in the universe is fixed. Beings can also arise spontaneously, a concept supported in various sutras and commentaries, which can contribute to the increase in population. Thus, the change in human population over time can be consistent with the broader and more complex understanding of life, death, and rebirth across multiple realms of existence, where consciousness can manifest in myriad forms, not limited to the human experience alone.

@@EgoPodcastenglishu may have offered an explanation but it is not grounded in the reality in which we live in. What basis is there to believe there are different "realms" in addition to the one we already know and currently experiencing. Dwelling on souls, ghosts or whatever seems like wishful thinking. Perhaps they exist only in human minds and in literature, u believe something exists for the sake of believing and not because it is truly so, so it is a bit of a biased thinking. Human beings are reluctant to accept their mortal existence so they come up with ways to comfort themselves, that they are not nothing, they can't or are too important and egoistic to go back to non-consciousness, or go from something to nothing or somebody to nobody. Be aware of this type of attachment to wishful thinking or people who try to sweet talk you into believing a falsehood, it leads people astray and perhaps even prevents them from achieving nirvana, the current realm is the only one we know and experience, and therefore there is good reason to focus our actions and thoughts on the here and the present, and not in "other realms" where we cant even prove nor disprove its existence or know how the stuff on the "other realms" work either!

Chapter 2 ending about Hell beings reborn as sick persons is incorrect. In the Upayakausalya sutra, the captain of a ship with 500 merchants killed a bandit who planned to murder those merchants to take their bounty because that captain saw no other way to save everyone from hell. His name was "Great Compassionate" and he saw that the 500 merchants were far along the path to awakening and did not want their progress to be retarded by the murdering intending bandit, he saw that if the bandit committed those killings, he would spend countless eons in Hell, he saw that if he told the merchants, they would kill him in anger and vengeance and they too would go to Hell, he was that he himself would go to Hell if he killed the bandit, but at least the bandit would not be guilty of murder and the merchants would have a higher chance of living to develop their awakening... so he chose to sacrifice his own future and he killed the bandit, and sure enough he went to hell when he died. But he his sentence was shorter than expected and he expired in Hell to arise in a heavenly realm, then back to the human realm.Great Compassion captain was none other than The Buddha Gautama in a previous life. The station in life is a result of thoughts, actions, intent as well as a few uncontrollable factors such as weather, etc... It is not possible that karma determines 100% of one's place, one's being, in the universe, as this would mean there is an imbalance skewed to living beings and all the inanimate non living things have zero agency. We know that there is balance in every aspect: hot, cold, etc... free will vs. immutable laws that bound us. The same goes for karmic and non karmic factors which create the reality we reside in. Both things are equal in agency.

The concept of reincarnation is very interesting and can explain some but not all things about "traveling" consciousness. For example, how did all of this begin? Following the Theory of Evolution, humans and the human brain evolved from simpler animal organisms, which in turn came from much simpler forms of egzistance, even groups of cells living in the oceans. Now, what did those cells do wrong or good to be reincarnated into one form or another? How have we started with a bunch of innocent cells and ended up with so much suffering? I don't think there's any rational explanation for this. My second problem with reincarnation is in its complexity (heven, angry ghost, etc.). How could Buddha figure this out? In general, some version of much simpler system of reincarnation would make more sense to me. Can our consciousness be just another form of cosmic energy moving freely between all living and static objects? After all we're all made out of energy. Maybe Buddha just couldn't put this together without possessing our current and vast (yet still limited) knowledge about the human brain, child development, psychology, astrophysics, and other sciences. I still greatly admire what he was able to achieve through meditation and his life-long experimentations.
@johnmonk3381
@johnmonk3381 Ай бұрын
If you have too many problems with your current understanding of reincarnation then you don't have to accept it as being true on any level while still practicing as a buddhist. You can be a secular buddhist, in the sense you practice what is in the present and the now, instead of in the future or the past, because the concept of reincarnation will naturally involve a continuation of form or a self that is unchanging and therefore cannot be true, according to the buddha. There is no self. Change is persistent and unrelenting. The concept of a permanent soul that passes through time unchanged and penetrates other lifeforms to continue existing not only sounds illogical, it is also incompatible with real buddhist teachings

Very educative. Please allow me to interrupt. I do research on how Buddhism disappeared in Bihar. I realized it never disappeared from Bihar. Buddhists simply failed to research Indian Buddhism. They looked at Buddhism through the sphere of their own cultures searching for only the Buddha. Buddha had a myriad of names in different villages according to his teachings there. Example. His favorite teaching was 'Lust and desire causes pain. Remove lust and desire, and pain is removed'. Translated into Bihari (where the Buddha story took place) it is DHUKH HARAN meaning to remove dukha. Three dozen villages pray to DUKH HARAN Baba. Its clear that DUKH HARAN Baba is none other than the Buddha. Problem is Buddhists are searching only for the Buddha. In the real Vaishali the Buddha begged for alms. The locals there pray to 'BHIKHAINI' Baba (Beggar Baba). Bhikhaini was mispronounced by Buddhists as Bhikshu. Who is BHIKHAINI Baba. The Buddha no doubt. But people are searching for a man called Buddha. In the real Vaishali, in Beluha the Buddha suffered a sickness and felt he had grown old. The locals pray to 'BURHA' Baba (Old Baba). Who is BURHA Baba. The Buddha no doubt. In the real Vaishali the Lichavies pressurized Buddha not to die. They trailed him to Bandagawan pressurizing him not to die. To put pressure in Hindi is DABESHWAR. Three dozen villages around the stupa where Buddha gave the Lichavies his patra, the villagers pray to Baba 'DABESHWAR NATH' meaning the man who won the pressurizing game. It was the the Buddha no doubt as he gave the Lichavies his patra and succeded in sending them back. But Buddhists are searching for the Buddha. Forgive me for commenting out of the topic. I just wanted to impart this information to you.

I wouldn't use the word punishment more like cause and affect but, about your question, if he said that he didn't want to fight, why did he kill a person? It depends on the thought when he killed someone. Did he kill that someone to save his life? If it's yes, that will be the intentional killing, that person killed someone intentionally to save his life which is not good ofc. Or did he kill that person to save someone else's life? If it's so, it will be the still intentional killing but he had a bright intention, so he will get half good karma and half bad karma.

"Therefore, with the breakup of the body, the fool fares on to [another] body. Faring on to [another] body, he is not freed from birth, aging and death; not freed from sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeausre, and despair; not freed from suffering, I say" (S. ii. 24). The problem now becomes what exactly is faring on, is it the "atman" or something else? I cannot find a single mention in the Pali Nikayas of the self or atman faring on. But there is little doubt that it is consciousness or in Pali viññāṇa [literally, in two parts knowing] that fares on after the death of the physical body insofar as during rebirth it can descend into a mother's womb (Mahānidāna Sutta, DN) according to the Buddha. In another discourse (S. ii. 13) the Buddha says: "The nutriment consciousness is a condition for the production of future renewed existence." At (S. ii. 65) the Buddha says: "When consciousness is established and has some growth, there is the production of future renewed existence."

How am i responsible for thoughts that come into my mind, not me thinking
@EgoPodcastenglish
@EgoPodcastenglish Ай бұрын
Thank you for your thoughtful question! In Buddhism, it’s understood that many of the thoughts that arise in our minds do so without our intentional control. These thoughts are often seen as the products of past conditioning and the continuous flow of mental activity that characterizes human consciousness. However, while we may not be responsible for the initial arising of these thoughts, Buddhist practice emphasizes the importance of how we respond to them. This is where mindfulness and awareness come into play. By observing our thoughts without attachment or aversion, we learn not to identify with them or act on them impulsively. This practice helps us gain insight into the nature of our minds and ultimately leads to greater peace and liberation from suffering. Your question highlights the importance of understanding the difference between having thoughts and identifying with them. Through consistent practice, we can learn to see thoughts just as they are-temporary and not defining of our true nature. If you’re interested in exploring techniques to better manage or understand these spontaneous thoughts, meditation and mindfulness practices can be very helpful.

The biblical prophet Elijah has returned, as prophesied, and testifies: The best-kept secret in this entire world of limitation is the reason WHY we are experiencing it. And you must have this piece of information before everything will make perfect sense to you. Buddhism is correct in indicating that ALL IS MIND. And if we put a name to It, "GOD" is the Mind that is ALL. Mind is THOUGHT (also called "Spirit"), and we are the Thought of that Mind, given the ability to think WITH that limitless Mind. But we fell into limitation - TEMPORARILY - due to an error that we made. And we will all OVERCOME that error and return to our natural and limitless state, in time. For that's what TIME was designed to accomplish - by the limitless Mind that cannot fail! "GOOD NEWS" indeed - which men have perverted into a bad news "gospel" of judgment and sacrifice for "sin." And that's why I was sent..."to set the record straight" at a time when many "Christians" are so deluded that they are worshiping an anti-Christ (Donald Trump) as god....
