For the original poster It looks like hes only going to use it for those close to the router so the speeds won't be impacted to the point it would be noticeable. The only time you would beed anything over 100mb/s is if your streaming a hidef movie or playing a high end online game. Otherwise the speeds noted from having the router surrounded by wood would be more than enough for the user.

Surely you could make a nice simplistic cabinet like that guy did but put like a mesh grid on it like a speaker cover, so the signal can still get through...surely that would work better? 🤷‍♂️

Would a concave mirror placed near the WiFi router help? I’m thinking of how a small blind spot mirror can help when driving a car, as it’s placed in a corner on the side mirror, giving the driver both normal and very wide perspectives of what is behind that side of the car.

Ermmm Liron you forgot to put your router into the same (presumably particle-board) tower thingy that the “designer” did? I suppose it would probably have the same result as the cardboard though. Also yours is a Mesh router, no? The one in the TikTok had antennas galore, it looked like. So, the two results would potentially be quite different. Also I am guessing the use case for the TikTok router is in the same room or, at most, two rooms down. Going to 100 plus feet away is a bit overkill. But, cool and educational video anyways. Thanks! 😊

Would it be worth repeating that test with the same material that was used in that tiktok video? I'm wondering if particle board or a real wood have different properties that might affect the signal differently.
@LironSegev
@LironSegev Жыл бұрын
the point is that it really depends on the layout of the property and how material can have an impact. Now no one is going to be stupid enough to stick their router in a pot, but having it in a cupboard and you are relatively close to the router, should have minimal impact. It will vary based on individual setup.

Just an arbitrary metal plate can have all and unpredictable results possibly including a stronger signal too. It is like a ship without captain, can go anywhere. Form, size, position and distance from router antenna will influence results strongly. Ready made directional and gain antennas are best choice, but some can easily be diy built by following many avaliable instruction videos on KZfaq too.

Thanks again for all your help I really enjoy watching you
@rikardlalic7275
@rikardlalic7275 Жыл бұрын
Hi! In hotels, if signal is weak, access points are often somewhere in the hall, placed very sparsely. It is best if you can seek for the location in your accommodation for the strongest signal and hope to find some stronger then -60dBm. At that location you may install your local and usually cheap WiFi repeater, to cover your space.

Balancing act, guess if the speed and strength is sufficient for your needs then fine. When does strength, quality or speed have an effect?
@LironSegev
@LironSegev Жыл бұрын
exactly. The better the speed between you and your router, the better your overall internet speed is. So if you have 150Mbps from your ISP to your router, and then you have only 10Mbps to your device because you stuck it inside a metal pot, then your internet speed will be slow.

You are measuring only the field strength and potential speed for receiving a signal. Browsing the web and even email is a 2 way communication where your smartphone has a much weaker transmitter and smaller antenna than the router. Resulting in a poor user experience. I would like to invite you to do this “test” again and then run a speed test app and browse the web.

Would the results have been significantly different if you had tried the online ping test?
@ChrisWrightGuitar
@ChrisWrightGuitar Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't have thought so do. That app is testing the link to the router itself, but interestingly also shows the signal strength as well as link speed which he didn't mention. You could see it dropping while the link speed was staying high when right next to it, notably the metal tins dropping from -20dB to -30/-40dB. Even with a degrated WiFi link, for most people the ISP link would be the most significant contributor to ping/latency, and likely also for link speed, so you'd probably just end up getting the same result across the board. The better test would be to ping the router itself if you wanted to test latency specifically. Anecdotely, for wired I get min/avg/max/mdev = 0.374/0.467/0.746/0.097 ms and for WiFi I get min/avg/max/mdev = 0.937/1.285/6.246/0.679 ms. My WiFi endpoint is in the loft about 5m away from my computer WiFi antenna which is sat next to a power brick under a 2" piece of kitchen worktop. Considering, that's not doing too bad, and almost certainly still far lower than any external connection is going to be.
