A Patron comes to the rescue with a parts delivery, we enjoy some easy light air sailing in the Exumas on our way to Shroud Cay and return to one of the most beautiful beaches we have ever seen. While there, we come across a mega-giga-yacht rumored to be owned by Mark Zuckerberg. No idea if that's true, but someone on the boat offered us Champagne! We also continue our tips for preparations to make for cruising - things you can do even before you've got the boat.

I made a 7x on my money in 2020 and now have 400k. I don't expect to do that again this year but with another 3x (1.2million) I think I'll feel safe enough to finally buy a boat. It's been a lot of years of dreaming but hopefully in a few more years I'll be seeing you two on the water!

House on the market next month and once it sells looking for a boat, great info guys as always, especially the tip about having one CC for auto pay and another for other items in case it gets shutdown for fraud or other reason, but CASH is KING is soooo true. As I get closer, I just wanted to thank you! Your videos have provided me a ton of info that will help from tips on buying the boat to outfitting it. Of course the great scenes from the Bahamas certainly keep me dreaming of being right there one day soon! Looking forward to the medical video next week, should be more great info to digest.

I didn't see any in your toolbox video but after making any electrical contact add Sil glide brake silicone lube it will virtually end corrosion on your electrical connections. Picked up that tip from a friend who lived in Houston and became tired of regular cleaning and repair of poor electrical connections on his vehicles. You cannot use too much and it also doubles as a great general purpose lubricant for all sorts of applications. I am becoming very attached to your channel and almost feel like I'm onboard helping with the repairs. Probably also because my wife and I RV with a 5th wheel and can commiserate with the everyday trials that are the reality of the adventure. Have you guys ever considered rainwater collection for some of your water needs? We have set up a small operation in conjunction with our RV and for showers and wash downs ect. You will be shocked just how fast a water tank will fill with rainwater. Be Well and fair winds

I thought it was a great episode when I saw the fuel burn data. Then we got to the financial stuff - Excellent video. You guys are killing it. I've been a landlord for 32 years (10 units before and 5 now) and I've never had good luck travelling. (I've always tried to do everything myself - maybe that's the problem). Some tenants are very hard to deal with and need constant attention/correspondence, while others could go on indefinitely without being late or having issues. Finding the right ones is imperative. I'm seriously considering selling my last 4-plex before/if we go cruising. Decades of dealing with tenants and city employees have ruined my landlording enthusiasm.

@Eexus
@Eexus 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah just so you know I was referring to PERSONAL safety. Have you guys encountered issues like that in your travels. How do you manage sleeping at night on anchorages, leaving your boat for long periods of time when on land... what is that life like? How do you handle those general situations. How do you know what regions are considered Dangerous Waters? What are the best/safest routes to cross the ocean etc.
@TheOKellys
@TheOKellys 3 жыл бұрын
We don't worry a lot about theft or piracy. Problem areas are well known. And if we were to be boarded, we will be fine. If they are going to risk their lives (and that's what they are doing by boarding this boat), then they need whatever it is more than we do.

Usually the alternators have a very long life but if the low output is a repeater it may not be the alternator. The positive red cable connected to the alternator may be burned out inside. High rpm will led some amps come out but the cable can become very hot and brittle. Or if the cable is good checking for voltage drop help troubleshooting identifying the problem. Also, Corrosion in the terminals or inside the cable can contribute to the low output.
@TheOKellys
@TheOKellys 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Checked all that. That alternator hadn’t been replaced during our ownership. When I replaced it, we had no tach and low output until engine first revved. Then it produced as expected. So field or regulator was no good out of the box. Replacement works fine from the beginning. But appreciate your knowledge for sure.

Huge suggestion for the "pay your recurring bills with a dedicated credit card" suggestion. Pay with Privacy. It's a banking service that generates separate credit card numbers for you to pay with. It debits your regular bank account via those credit card numbers. The beauty of it is that every single payee gets a different number. No one can steal your credit card info online and hope to use it because Privacy ties that number to the first company that uses it. In my case I purchased a flashlight online and they got their system compromised. Someone attempted to use that card number to buy Dominoes Pizza and Privacy rejected the charge because the number was tied to the flashlight company. What this allows is for you to buy things online, including those monthly bills like Netflix, without worrying that someone would steal your card number and force you to change credit card numbers on all your other payment accounts. Privacy debits whichever checking account you designate for each "card" you generate. If you have several bank accounts you can tie them all to Privacy. I have two cards for Amazon, one that takes money from my personal checking account and another that charges the "Family" checking account. It's only fair that I pay for my own books, right? You can also make "burner" numbers that can only be used once. Plus, if you sign up for a monthly subscription and you can't get them to stop the subscription? Cancel that card in Privacy. Since that card only pays that one bill, you don't have the problem of changing the card on all your other bills. Privacy is a real bank, complete with all the required "Know Your Customer" laws, so they're going to demand ID, just like any other real bank. I can't recommend them enough. They've saved me a few times from online stupidity and fraud. privacy.com/join/D9B52

Hi Megan & Nick, Thanks for another great, informative video! When I was at Shroud Cay years ago, did the exact same trip and remember the sand at the entrance/exit ocean side was some of the softest I'd ever experienced, sinking up to my ankles while walking on it. @TheOKellys
@TheOKellys 3 жыл бұрын
Probably the screecher. Lot of variable winds. We are talking San Juans, Salish Sea, Desolation Sound, right? But pairing with the screecher would have to be an asymmetrical spinnaker. There are those days where you can make a run from PT down to Elliot Bay and you want the chute. If you are talking about the Columbia River, etc., I don't think you need either, but a Code 0 or spinnaker will be best.

For the last 3 years I have been planning to purchase the boat outright but, lately I have been considering the idea of financing 'some' of the purchase price. Cruising life for me is planned to be financed by the income from rental properties. So if the money saved by financing part of the boat can go toward another (or part of another) rental property, it just makes more sense (and dollars and cents!)

I'm going to ask a wee bit about banking. I know you guys are mostly carribean cruisers, but even that can deal with a fairly wide range of monetary nationalities. Do you find it easy to withdraw cash at whatever local ATM is there? Does nationality of currency make it more or less difficult? Does your bank support this without hassle? What would you suggest asking your bank about such things in preparation to go cruise? How did you get into reading audio books....? Thanks again!

Lot to get into here, but sill just say dollars are a real safe bet in the Carib. Getting Euros never a problem if needed. Bank fees depend on your bank, but can be high at an ATM

Do you guys have the budget to get a StarLink internet connection? I have been watching many of your videos and the videos of other full-timers. I have not seen anyone talk about their internet. I believe that the current cost for StarLink is $100 / month and $500 for the equipment

This was a particularly good and useful video. The financial piece especially. What I’m grappling with is whether to turn our home into an income property or just sell it and invest it. If we sell it and invest it, we’re subject to what prices are if we want to come home. If we rent it, we still own it and can come home . What am I missing here?
@TheOKellys
@TheOKellys 3 жыл бұрын
It’s an asset, like any other. If you think other investments will outperform your home value, then you have your answer. But also, if you really love the home, keep it.

Love your shows and something that maybe you guys could address that I have NEVER seen another sailing channel address is cash and how it is stored onboard and how much cash needs to be kept on hand. I am not asking for specifics due to security and privacy issues, obviously, but does one need 2 months worth of cash on hand for remote sailing, do these boats have some type of hidden safe for securing said cash, etc. Just would really like to see how this works and no one, I mean no one, ever addresses it. I don't know if it is a security thing or just a blindspot for Vloggers and not realizing this is something audiences and potential cruisers would like to know. Any way, my two cents worth from the landlocked country of Nepal!
