More Deets:
In 2016 we set off to explore the world on a sailboat with absolutely no previous experience. We didn’t know what to expect or how to budget for such an unknown lifestyle.
Sure, we had done several google searches on “how much does it cost to sail around the world” but we couldn’t find anything all that helpful (sooo much more info out now). It was mostly a bunch of hypotheticals or listicles of what to consider.
Some things were easier to guess at, like how much we would spend on food (because we’re still going to eat). But we had no idea what we would be spending on things like fuel, repairs, and maintenance.
Over the past four years, we’ve sailed to seven countries and put over 13,000 nautical miles under our hulls.
We’ve learned a lot in that time and learned a lot about our spending habits in this new salty life.
Everyone always says BOAT is just an acronym for Bust Out Another Thousand. And in the beginning, it felt that way. The first year was buying and outfitting for off the grid and it was a total wallet buster!
But since then, we’ve been able to stick to our budget pretty closely and we’ve been pleasantly surprised.
So, what does it cost to sail around the world?
Not many people are willing to share their personal expenses or talk about money (so please be kind). But it’s hard to plan a big life change on hypotheticals. So, here is what it costs us to live and travel full time on a sailboat.
WHO ARE WE?
We’re Jason and Nikki Wynn. We been living #OffTheGrid and exploring the world for almost a decade.
Our first six years of #travel were an epic road trip around North America.
Now we’re on a #sailing voyage about the world. Did we have any previous sailing experience, of course not!
Neither of us is overly talented, smart, rich, lucky, or retired. But that doesn’t stop us from reaching far-flung destinations, having wild adventures, and managing everything that makes living aboard a moving vessel possible.
We’re two ordinary people that just so happen to live an extraordinary life.
Because... Life is an adventure!
Extraordinary moments out there for anyone willing, and wanting, to go after it. Ya know life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
And this is why we publish our lives on the world wide web. We share in hopes of inspiring you to find your adventure.
Shared with LOVE 💕

Thank you all for the comments! Money is a difficult subject to cover as it brings out lots of irrelevant opinions of how one should live their life. But we know it helps many plan for their next life, so that’s why we share. Here’s some answers to the most popular questions: Boat Loan - We paid for and we own our boat. We do not have a loan and that is why you don’t see that in our budget. We did however have to pull a temporary loan from my life insurance policy and we talk about it here (I think, if not it’s somewhere in our buying a catamaran series): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hb-Kg9tl2LKZo58.html Cats - We told the story of our sailing cats here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/otBdmMKVr9irdJs.html Singa - Mr. Singa is in LOVE. He has a new girlfriend on the ranch named Linda. You can see him on Instagram @talesfromthemutiny He is happier than ever running around in the high desert of CO with a bunch of barnyard animals to keep him entertained. It warms my heart to know we’re locked up in an apartment but he’s running around a farm! We love and miss that cat everyday. PIP - Pip the cat is full on kitten now and healthy as can be. We’re doing an update video on her this week or next. She is a ball of energy! Beach Dog - HA! We did not adopt “RED” the beach dog. She likes to walk with us and decided to make her KZfaq debut for our money chat. Savings Plan - We are putting away money into retirement accounts, but we don’t feel like that makes sense to include in a sailing budget because everyone will have different rainy-day and retirement funds. Several questions about making money, perhaps we will consider sharing resources on how to work remotely. TAXES - YES, we pay tax in the USA. Its way too complicated for me to understand let alone share. We pay personal tax and corporate tax. Seems like Healthcare and Boat insurance is a much wanted topic…so we’ll start to wrap our heads around that vid…that subject deserves a 😍 and a 😢. Insurance is great but it really hurts at the same time. We said it twice in the vid but here is goes again: YOU CAN LIVE THIS LIFE ON ANY BUDGET. If you can live on $5 per day then great for you, go do it and leave your comments to yourself. OK, Last time I’m going to say that.

I appreciate your sharing your budget. I wouldn't want to discuss my personal financing on KZfaq but I understand why you do it. With that said, I think you both are amazing and a total inspiration. I like to think at some point in my life, I will get the chance to go tramping by sea or land. It's fascinating to see how you do it and to learn from your experience. As a fellow cat person, (Tango & Sadie), I also know how tough it is to lose a cat.

Great vid. Even though you’re not sailing you both manage to provide fantastic, entertaining and knowledgeable content. This one is no exception. Are you able to now cover how to work remotely? My husband and I are planning to still work while living aboard. Just not should what the best fit would be. My husbands fine he’s a mechanical engineer and has worked as a boat builder, but I’m scratching my head as to what I can do.

Seeing you sitting there breaking down all the costs reminded me of virtually the same scene right after you bought curiosity when you sat in the grass and broke down the costs associated with that whole process (more beach in the background this time and less airplane noise, but otherwise a time warp moment). You've come a long way since then...literally and figuratively!! You were always bright, informative, classy and well-spoken, but now with the years of sailing, you've seen things and places the RV could never have shown you! In that process, you've also become mentors and heroes to those of us who hope to share this lifestyle someday!! It's really been a pleasure and quite the education!! Thanks so much for taking us along! (And I hope you find your way back to Curiosity very soon!)

hey! we've been living on our 58-foot catamaran with no experience and our insurance was $16,000 USD the first year and $12,000 USD --- it really depends on where you plan to cruise... Florida is expensive during hurricane season. and, if you head to Panama, more expensive... etc etc.

With ourselves living Canada, health coverage is basically covered for us all via our taxes, but what would the cost be for a 'couple' in the USA? Many are trying to get dental coverage included in our health coverage, but who knows if that will ever happen....but whether you have a ton of money, or homeless here, all have health insurance coverage. I don't remember you mentioning 'dental' coverage, so perhaps you could expand on that?
@laraslife123
@laraslife123 3 жыл бұрын
@@dalewatkins9889 please don’t give the general public the idea that health insurance is free here in Canada. Working class people can pay $200/month for a family of 4. An ambulance ride can cost $300 if you don’t have coverage. Dental is out of your own pocket unless you are on social assistance. I know this from experience. Not everyone has everything covered.

@@dalewatkins9889 Medical and pharmacy insurance in the USA is based on whether your employee contributes money to your insurance, what state you live in, and your income. Good insurance Runs about $800/month per person or higher. Not good insurance is about half that. In California, depending on your income, the state will contribute to your insurance cost to lower that price to something reasonable. Dental and vision are usually a separate insurance, and I’m not sure what it is, maybe something like $80/month for both. Without insurance, a single ambulance ride is something like $1600. Appendix removal and two nights in the hospital is something around $30,000-$40,000.

We were there with an Airstream get together and I think you guys were just starting your Florida tour. I always regret not having stopped by to meet you. I've met other KZfaq travelers and they tell me that they value their privacy. When we were traveling full-time in our Airstream trailer, I can remember how little we spent. Some months less than $1000 easily. The key is to boondock or wild camp for free. The experience is better than staying in RV parks and much cheaper. Anyway, I hope you get back to your boat ASAP, I know this must be wearing on you.

Your comment about the cost of health insurance worldwide (excluding the USA) is spot on. We had worldwide insurance for a year and the add-on cost to have coverage in the US for 2 weeks was nearly the annual price without US coverage. Crazy expensive. Since your US land-visit (setting mom up with the Sprinter), your videos continue to get more personal, relatable, ...they feel...less curated. Really great to continue to watch you two! Thank you! :) Question re: maintenance skills. It's purely personal aptitude, but how did you perceive the learning curve to figure out all the maintenance? From electronics to mechanics, from sails to engines... It's an incredible all-around job; it can't be always easy or intuitive, and it's likely time-intense when you learn it all?

We came from Dallas also. We thought about sailing even bought a Baba 30. But the wind changed and we bought a Winnebago and are cruising the U.S. and probably Canada. one thing we would like to do is take a riverboat trip thru Europe from Amsterdam to th Black sea.

I would add a couple of things about insurance: 1. Boat insurance for an expensive boat that has a loan is going to be much more expensive than, say, a less expensive boat with no loan (i.e., there would be no regulatory requirement for insurance.) One could probably be comfortable just purchasing a liability policy to cover damage to other property. 2. I completely understand individuals being risk averse and choosing to buy insurance for personal belongings (e.g., your cameras, rings, etc.) but always keeping in mind that insurance companies work on a positive expected value model - i.e., they make a profit. It's kind of like Las Vegas... :) So, if one is risk neutral, a more rational (in a game theory or economic context - no offense) choice would be to self-insure. One of the better videos on boat costs (AND you have a dog in it. Can never go wrong there. :) )

Appreciate the encouragement provided for those are considering casting the lines. We are life long sailors (had a L39 & L45L inbound) and could clearly see from our shared ride on that Leopard Powercat from the late night Miami boat show, that you all are the real deal. Thank you! Can you share the cost of running your business? Internet, camera, editing computers, website,.... You estimated 36K in annual expenses, but would guess that you need to invest 10+K in the systems, that fund those expenses. Love your input here. Cheers and thank you, s/v RadiantHope

I'm wondering what portion of the boat maintenance is related to having internal combustion engines rather than electric engines? So what did you spend on the starter, the fuel pump, alternator, oil, X cetera. If I were to outfit with electric engines I would still have a generator so I would still have the fuel tanks.. Converting a boat over to electric engines would be expensive but I could offset that by selling the diesels and maybe recoup the rest over time by saving maintenance.

I think you're more open and honest than a lot of other You-tuber's, bloggers who've gone off grid. Be it on a sail boat or a log cabin. A lot of people dream of going off grid but have no idea what's involved. From knowledge to be acquired to start up costs. The same can be said in starting a business. A lot of people jump before they look and than wonder why they're face down in the dirt or on their backside. You showed us the process from beginning to now. Your failures and successes. We might/ might not follow in your footsteps but have a better understanding of the journey and therefore enjoy it that much more.

As a KZfaqr wanna be, Your Business Expenses would be extremely interesting. Not anything personal, but your basic essential costs that you need to have for KZfaq. So pretend you only had an Iphone. What do you spend for software, Wifi, other business expenses?? Actually you probably don't need to reveal $$$ just what you have to make this all work? What would cause your channel fall apart if you didn't have it? Its a great channel (Maybe you don't want to reveal your Secrets)
