I have a ton of nostalgia for 8/16 bit JRPGs. I grew up loving them. But I can't really get super into them anymore. That time, for me, is past. I still like the aesthetic and playstyle, but I don't get into them like I did. There are good new ones, too. Ara Fell, Cosmic Star Heroine, and Cthulhu Saves the World are fun. I'll probably play this eventually too, when it goes on sale for $10 or so.

I can definitely understand that, I do burn out on them at times, but they still hold a soft spot for me - out of those three, it did give me more serious Ara Fell vibes oddly enough - just longer, with a bit more depth to the systems.

Chrono Trigger graphic and FFV battle system, gotta love it...

FFV was a bit more flexible - though I can definitely see the comparison.

To me, it seems like you’re being overly negative about this game. This is one of the best JRPGs I’ve ever played, and I’m someone who doesn’t like the genre that much. I found there to be far more variety to the combat in this than in nearly all others. When it came to the overdrive system, I absolutely felt I needed to keep the characters in the green for the most part, or I’d get annihilated. The game was challenging nearly the whole way through for me. But rarely ever unfair. I do agree with you regarding the crafting system and it’s artificial complexity, though. That was my biggest issue with the game.

the fact this was not made in rpg maker already makes it a leg up to most indie jrpgs. but i have been burned way to many times by indie jrpgs trying to be ff. they all have intresting combat but lack luster writieng. and the lack of exp in this game is a turn off for me.
