The west has long been preaching a mixture of the two. Yet look around and one can easily find traits of how freedom of the press divide communities, how elections produce incompetent leaders, and how an independent judiciary protects only the rich. Eric Li, a venture capitalist and political scientist, explains reasons behind western democratic failures and encourages international scholars to explore new paths and models for democracy.

A story about democracy: A farmer asked his son before he died, "Pigs complain about poor feed, cows complain about heavy work, and chickens complain about dirty nests. What should you do?". The son said: "Change to good feed, buy more cows, clean up Chicken coop." The farmer shook his head and said. "No, don't do anything. Let them vote, let them choose you or your wife to take care of them, and let them think they are the boss”.

There are actually a lot of thinkers like Eric in China. They don't speak as good English though and their videos at KZfaq can be hard to find if you are not from a Chinese community. These thinkers presented different solutions to today's problems in China, but most of them agree on one single fact: US political system is flawed, and a flawed superpower with nuclear domination can be quite dangerous to the world. China needs to be very careful when such a nation is targeting us.

Liberal democracy is an inherently contradictory system. A socio-economic system such as Capitalism, which is authoritarian and exploitative by nature, cannot coexist alongside a democratic political system. When you allow individuals to control private property, capital, and the means of production you allow them to accumulate extreme levels of wealth, to the point where they are able to easily influence society and government. Capitalism eats democracy, chews it up, and then spits it out. What we end up with is a corporatocracy that breeds a kakistocracy (a society dominated by stupid, rich kids). That describes modern-day America. Only through Socialism, which is basically the democratization of the economy, can we free a democratic political system from the influence of capitalists.

I wish there were many more like you - well educated, analytical who understands western mentality but at the same time kept an open mind and look at facts. I just like to add 1 view point. When we look at at least the recorded history of the human race, no matter what kind of system - democracy, communism, authoritarian, dictatorship, Nazism, religious cult - any form of governing when they fail to look after the lives of the people, the mass, they toppled. The well educated, the intellects are arguing over ideologies, freedom of speech, human rights (which differs even between different democratic countries) from their high moral grounds and failed to understand the real society they supposed to help or think they can improve on. It is all paper pushing - full or sound and fury, signifying NOTHING. The world needs action not constant rhetoric. Keep up your good work Eric !

A debate with Chinese characteristics! I think the point is made. Democracies need independent institutions to survive. Democracies can lead to in-effective governments. Solution is to elect a less in-effective government. Recent history is littered with failed democracies because they don't have independent institutions ie they serve an elite. While others succeed because they do.

Democracy should be measured by one metric. Does the govt actions line up precisely with the people’s will. In liberal countries, this is absolutely not the case. Policy invariably lines up with the wishes of the 1%. Americans hope and pray the govt would listen to them just once! In socialist countries, like cuba, china, nicaragua…we see govt’s extremely responsive to the people’s needs, even WHILE suffering under the boot of American blockades, sanctions and embargos. There are reasons there is not enough gas in cuba, america is SANCTIONING them and their suppliers. What is America’s excuse for not providing their citizens gas at a reasonable price?

@@larry6601 Most of state owned companies are making money in China. Some companies are losing money because government keeps them so. For example, China's railway has a debt of about 5 trillion rmb, but with its assets of 150K km regular railways and about 40K km of high speed railway, the debt/assets ratio is still low. China keeps the railway passenger tickets low and unchanged since 1990s. The low price benefits every one who use the railways. Basically, all the political ideas that we as humankind could come up, are that everyone acts on self-interest (western realism and Chinese legalism), that when people are left alone they do the right things (liberalism, Taoism) and Accountability which was implemented in China in the form of the mandate of heaven. I think it had a lot to do with circumstances not only with innovativeness or creativity, but still, it is probably the most advanced political idea we have. On one hand, it is a very complex thing to keep happy 1.4 billion people, on the other hand, it is really that simple, things are and have been historically working out in China because if they hadn't, people would have overthrown the dynasties, which happened with the Qin and Yuan dynasty and the Guomindang, and in other cases more politically by other members of the government. John Lock in his second treaties also discussed the rightful overthrown of leaders, but it somehow never made it to mainstream political thoughts, hence western governments were never held accountable by the people. Liberalism wants to create larger institutions to hold governments accountable, but who holds them accountable? Confucianism has the answer, but orientalism is a too large part of western culture and we prefer to believe that we hold the monopoly of rightness.

A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Therefore by their fruits you will know them." Liberalism isnt necesarily correlating with living standarts.. take the case of tunisia not luxemburg cause obviously be in the middle of europe and being part of the old continent with all that implies (economic relations) isnt the same. And that countries even being liberal as fuc have a lot of social policies that for example other liberal countries lack.. for example Us. Search data about letting the healthcare in private hands and not in public ones compared with countries much poorer in europe for example..

Democracy, liberalism, capitalism, communism, fascism, etc. were all ideas that were formulated the philosophers/scholars/economist from the West and were practiced by their elites. The ideas of harmony, yin & yang, etc. came from the East. There must be an integration of polarities.

The trouble today is that the US succeeded in selling democracy as the be all and end all, at least the idea of it. People should also take into account that there must be a reason democracy disappeared for millenias after the Athenians used it. It only resurfaced when the US used it again to form their government. And to think that Democracy as we think of it now - representative government - was not what was practiced in either Greece or Rome.

In looking at the analysis he made of the case of Tunisia saying there is a contradiction between the conclusions of the Freedom House and what the people of Tunisia say, I don't think he is right. He say the people are miserable while Freedom House say there is democratic improvement thus there is a contradiction. An economic crisis can affect the well-being of the people living in democracy this doesn't mean democracy isn't true in that society. He seem to compare two different things. Any idea that freedom of the press divide communities and that election produce incompetent leaders are dangerous. As such these can't be the basis of new paths and models for democracy to explore. Freedom is absolutely important for human beings. Freedom of the press seeks freedom the truth, because when the truth isn't free, freedom can't be true. Too many people are suffering from dictators, there is no need to come with the ideas that freedom of the press divide communities and election shapes incompetent leaders. The paths suggested here can only make things worst.

Barry Buzan, Jaap de Wilde, and Ole Wæver wrote a book about how political actors make up shit to override human rights and rule of law, by using security language. In the same way as the US and its rat clan invaded Iraq talking about "weapon of mass destruction" now they use the term genocide against China in economical warfare. When we talk about genocide, most people would think about the Nazis or Rwanda, but the whole Uyghur thing comes from bullshiting the world and saying that because Uyghur birthrate dropped China took those potential lives, without considering that learning mandarin and integrating Uyghurs into urban society is a very large part of the program and urbanisation has a very significant effect on birthrate.

According to Eric Li "Democracy equals performance "IS this true for China where the countries like Japan and Taiwan has improved much more than China while China has gone through the cultural revolution the gang of four terrible famines when Chinese were eating there babys and Tiananmen square . The Chinese people are approving of their government only because of properganda . not because of the wonderful CPC. This is why Taiwan is a problem for China and the pressure is on to invade it shows what China could be if the CPC allowed them to make money in the past they would be much richer now and making money is what the chinese people are very good at.

Taiwan grew during dictatorship. After it turned democratic, average wage started to stagnant and political division grew. It's currently a very polarized society that is heading towards the worst possible outcome with China, seemingly incapable of making good decisions. China started with a very backwards system, which as you said made many mistakes. However, the system has something strange about it. It learns from it's mistake, and keeps tinkering with itself, making changes that contradicts it's supposedly communists roots, result in the current iteration which nobody even knows what it is; it's got public, private, collective, autocratic, meritocratic, top-down, grassroots, and even democratic features. It's an abomination, but with each iteration of changes, the results seem to get better and better. It reminds me of a AI that plays chess. Initially it's very stupid. But after learning from thousands of games, it becomes unbeatable.
@henli-rw5dw
@henli-rw5dw 2 жыл бұрын
I guess it can be summed as follows. A democratic system is static. It can not improve itself because procedurally it can not change, else it isn't no longer democratic. Whatever China's system is called is dynamic. It can change over time. Given enough time, a dynamic system that can improve will always out perform a static system that has no flexibility to deal with change.
