In this video, I show you how to install Thermafiber Mineral Wool Sound and Fire insulation. Does mineral wool really work? I run some tests with a sound level meter (or decimal meter) to see if the insulation is worth it. Hope this video helps you to see how sound proof, or not, your insulation is! Thanks for watching!

A complementary test would be when the drywall is put up, to help soundproofing and see if the noise is more reduced. Or when the furniture act as noise absorbent, to test too. Is an a idea.
@davidwostrel

Please do with drywall. I did this im bedroom and the sound reduction felt like it went down with the drywall, but that could be down to the reflections from in the room that no longer was exposed to the open rockwool
@Matt-cl4mp
@Matt-cl4mp 11 ай бұрын
The point of the test is to determine if there is any noise reduction with the mineral wool insulation, not the drywall. That would be a ton of work to have to put drywall up and then tear it all out to test ot again but with insulation added.

I renovated a bathroom recently. It shared one wall with our rental suite (bedroom on the other side) and you could definitely hear conversations across the wall. I added the same type of insulation in that wall without knowing how well it would work, so it's good to see someone actually put it to the test. It's too early to tell how well it worked in my case. Nice demonstration sir! I know in the beginning you mentioned you'd need a vapor barrier to use that stuff on exterior walls, but actually mineral wool is non-wicking when it comes to water, and its insulative properties don't decrease with moisture either. You can put that stuff in the wall without the need for a vapor barrier at all!

When I remodeled my upstairs bedrooms I did exactly this method. Fiberglass on the outside walls and mineral wool on the inside walls. The wall that separates the two rooms for my boys (4 and 6) also got a layer of sound isolation board on one side. What a huge difference. You can’t hear a peep from one room to the other. Last thing I will be doing is swapping out the hollow core doors and we will get some better performance. Keep up the good work and the videos.

Keep in mind that every 3 dB is twice as loud/quiet, meaning it reduced sound by 3-4 times or so. It would be complimented by 2 layers of drywall, sealing first layer with sound caulk; just not sure if worthwhile for regular house that has no neighbors on other side of the wall

I'm very late to this. But 3db is double the power; 6db is double the amplitude (voltage) of a signal; neither are necessarily doubling of perceived intensity. Perception is interesting, but since our ears are logarithmic, 10db is generally regarded as a perceived doubling of volume.

I used rockwool in my garage and I will never use anything else. SO easy to cut and handle with no itching for days afterward! No bugs, no mice, no fire worries and a MASSIVE drop in sound. Once you have up your drywall and it's sealed, you'll have an even bigger drop, even with your thin walls. For those with media rooms or a musical instrument room (or a common wall with a neighbor), layer a second set of drywall with offsetting gaps and the green glue between sheets and it will be like it's not even in the house while you shake the floors and walls in that room.

Garage doors are never going to be airtight, so it breathes enough on its own to allow rain and snow that comes in on vehicles to evaporate and escape without any impact on the insulation. I removed my previous message, I think I got it. The sound will transfer through the drywall, the stud, and the drywall next to another chamber or through the ceiling's plywood of the apartment above. The important thing is that the drywall doesn't touch the stud. I found some SONOpan 3/4" at Home Depot in Canada. I intend to put the sound insulator directly on the ceiling's drywall, then adding another drywall. The vibration caused by the lower frequency, or a bass, would be the worst. If instead of 2x4 they are 2x10 and putting the best sound insulation between the studs, the sound or vibration will still be transferred by the drywall to the 2x10 and the plywood's floor above. I might double the SONOpan to have 1 1/2". Some sound or vibration will still be transferred through the walls around by the drywall, the stud, the drywall next to the adjacent apartment. I don't have to do the wall, but what I found out is: don't let the drywall touch the stud. I am not a sound expert, I just made a lot of research about it and I made my own conclusion. I intend to put the SONOpan directly on the drywall's ceiling, then I will cover it with drywall.

if you really want to reduce the dB but a stupid amount, and you don't mind going bankrupt in the process, you'll need to build a "second" wall with studs offset from the primary wall, and fill that wall in with thermafibre + bass reduction rubber + the green stuff. The wood is the primary conductor of sound in this situation so you need to separate it from transmission.
