I actually looked up protein treatments, the best one is called ApHogee keratin 2 minute reconstructor (AMAZING!). I use this weekly, then every 6 weeks i use ApHogee 2 step protein treatment ( HIGHLY RECOMMEND!😍). I use a moisterising shamppo and conditioner - ausie brand, and ogx hair oil to keep the moisture and protein balance. My hair is so healthy now and have tighter curls! 🥰🥰🥰

I'm new to this, but the Woman to Woman spray doesn't mention any of the ingredients you have listed. A lot of oils though which would weigh down my fine and thin hair. Any other leave in /refresh suggestions? Can I dilute a protein/moisture deep conditioner with water and put it in a mister?

Needed this video badly. No matter how many videos ive seen, I still don't really know if i have high or low porosity hair, so can't wait for that video. I kinda have stringy stretched curls in places and some that are also kinda hard and dry with breakage so... ahhh. Water also completely beads on my hair yet its color treated and dry. My hair doesnt know what it is. I'll figure it out eventually im sure x
@JannelleOShaughnessy
@JannelleOShaughnessy 5 жыл бұрын
I'm still putting that video together but if water is beading up on your hair its likely normal or low porosity. Also, does it take a long time to dry. If yes=low porosity if no=high porosity! Also, have you clarified recently? Sometimes buildup/hard water build up can act the same way!

After 17 years of using the hot iron every week to straighten my hair, I'm now 6 months transitioning, but my hair still doesn't want to curl entirely, it's straight/wavy. I assumed that with all that heat damage I should be high porosity, but so far all the tests I've done like a hair in a bowl of water etc result low porosity. Plus my hair takes 4-5 hours to a air dry after washing. What I do know for sure is that my hair is medium-thick, it is definitely not thin, plus I've got a lot of hair, thick density. So the protein part I haven't really figured out yet. But this I do know for sure, I once a week deep condition with the Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor oil deep conditioner and my hair seems to love that. Best hair day the entire week! But then the curls don't last long, day 2 or 3 it's almost straight again. I have to admit though that when I first bought CG products, and I bought a lot, I didn't really give much thought to ingredients. Now looking at the ingredients listed, they all seem to have a lot of proteins in them and pretty high up in the list ha ha ha... I don't know if that's good or bad. But one thing I have figured out is this: I just started on a As I am gel and I've discovered that I've been scared of using too much product, since I've been experiencing product build up easily (like my hair feels stick and greasy easily) but on the other hand when I didn't use enough of this product my curls (which are more waves at the moment) wouldn't hold as long. But now when I used more of the gel I could at least get a 2nd day of wavy hair before it turns straight. Sounds a bit contradicting all doesn't it?

Its not easy getting to the bottom of our hair needs. I've found that when my hair is super moisturized like borderline too much it lays flatter. Also when I have too much product. But that could also be from product build up. Do you ever clarify your hair? I personally find it important to do once a month or so to ensure my hair is free of other products and essentially a clean slate.

@@JannelleOShaughnessyThank you for replying. I honestly don't strictly co-wash only, once a week I use a sulfate free shampoo. But every now and then, like once every 4-6 weeks I admit I do use a shampoo with sulfate, just to make sure. But there might be something to what you say maybe the products I use are too much or too heavy for me. I use Shea Moisture products and someone did say something like that once before to me. Hmm, I'll have to try something else to know the difference, right?

I mean, I know my hair needs moisture, that's for sure. When I do the hair strand test my hair snaps easily, I've read that it might also have a protein overload... How do I know if I should use proteins or not? I'm going to explain; My hair hasn't looked good in a looong time. My hair is very fine (scandinavian) and hightlighted, so it's probably medium/high porosity in the ends. Closer to my scalp it's probably low/medium porosity. I've been washing my hair with a schampoo that has dried it out, and since my hair is fine+bleached I suppose it could have also stripped protein out from the core. My logic therefore tells me that my hair would need both moisture AND protein because of the 1) lack of moisture 2) thin core of the strands 3) the schampoo might have stripped out proteins Or am I wrong? But then, my hair products have contained a little protein, so it could potentially be protein overloaded - but how do I know?

If your interested in figuring out your curl pattern you should research and try out the curly girl method. I'm shocked only a month and a week in and my curls have sprung up so much. I literally cant wait to see how much curlier my hair will become. I thought I had frizzy wavey curls my whole life, meanwhile I'm now sporting a head full of ringlets. It's hard for curls to clump and appear in your hair when we are using harsh shampoos, conditioners and products. They just coat our hair weigh it down and cause curls to turn to friz. Also heat and curls dont mix flat irons blow drying and over manipulating the hair can also cause you to loose curl pattern. Anyways I hope this helps. You might be sitting right now with the hair of your dreams and not even know it.

@@suzylove6502 yay!, im so happy to hear this. I had a feeling you were curly lol. Also their are allot of rules with the CGM as you know. I wanted to mention that if your scalp gets itchy or doesnt feel clean. Then I recommend you using a sulfate shampoo once a month and follow with a deep conditioner. I am a hairstylist and the only thing I see wrong with the CGM is that hair flurishes while scalp goes to hell with build up. Our scalp is getting too much oil, product and moisture. This in end causes blocked hair follicules that equal hair loss 😱. In my experience my scalp went crazy third week in. I tried vinegar rinse and etc nothing natural worked. I feel allot of people are putting up with scalp issues because their hair looks good and they dont want to break any rules. However a unhealthy scalp equals unhealthy hair. In end it is so uncomfortable is itchy and has bumps. This is just the beginning of a bad thing and it will effect your hair and how it looks with time. I Hope this helps I was really hesitant to use sulfate again then I remembered everything I was taught about scalp health in school. I washed with it and instantly felt better, I had no itch. Also those weird sore bumps dried and disappeared so fast. I havent had scalp problems scense thankfully 🙌🏼😊

How can you tell if a product has a small, medium, or large amount of protein? I’d love to see a video not just on your favorite stylers that contain protein but maybe what ingredients to look out for when looking for products with a lot of protein - or at times maybe when you’re trying to avoid protein just what ingredients to keep an eye on. Loved this video!! I’ve been learning lately that my hair is really in need of protein and not sure if it’s because I’ve already used coconut oil and it’s just overly moisturized so your video came at the perfect time for me. Nicole Sweiss all you need to do is see where on the ingredients list the protein is. If it's in the first few lines, it's high in protein, if it's in the middle of the list, it's medium. Any lower than that, it's relatively low.

Hi Janellee! I have two questions: 1. You have mentioned Olaplex 3 in previous videos - where does that product fall in terms of how much protein it offers? 2. What are key words to look for in the ingredients list to determine if a product is offering protein?
@JannelleOShaughnessy
@JannelleOShaughnessy 5 жыл бұрын
Olaplex doesn't technically have protein, it has aloe which contains amino acids. I give a disclaimer regarding olaplaex and protein because amino acids/aloe behave like most proteins for many curlies. And if you get technical are kind of a protein in themselves but thats another story. The aloe is very low on the ingredient list but because it is not a conditioning treatment the signs are more obvious to show up. I will be pinning a quick protein guide to the top of the comments shortly because i got that question a few times. Take a look when you can!

My hair bounces back like rubber. 😂 I still have an endless halo of frizz though, so I'm not sure what's causing that. Maybe it's breakage from tying my hair back in a tight pony whenever I leave the house...

How can I tell if it’s stretching or not? I pull and it snaps pretty quick....I think it stretches a little bit first but I can’t tell if it bounces back? I have very fine natural blonde hair and it’s extremely hard to see (think like half the diameter of a transparent fishing line...lol). I have been doing some masks with protein and moisture. Any suggestions on how to tell if your hair is crunchy from lack of moisture or protein overload?

good job there with the video, i found the same. when i do rice water rinses it feels like its too much protein for me and leaves my hair stringy but when I use bounce curl for styling i get the best results :)

After many years, I accidentally figured out the protein thing on my own, learning to ignore the industry’s insistence on trying to sell me silicone products for frizzy hair. So I wish you came along 20 years earlier, but thanks anyway.

Have you tried using a DIY gelatin protein treatment? Supposedly it’s like using the Aphogee protein treatment. Just make sure to do a deep conditioning afterwards. There are a lot of videos on it, but I’ve not tried it yet since I just did a different protein treatment, but I’m going to try it next.

We Are Legion I haven’t personally tried it but have heard excellent things as well. I tend to lean towards the lazier side of hair care 😂 so getting to diys doesn’t always happen

@We Are Legion - I just did one yesterday! I've never done a protein mask and have spent so many years trying to avoid protein so it took me AGES to understand that my hair was over conditioned. It felt so soft and smooth, which are words many natural curlies use as words to describe their goals when they have coarse and high porosity hair. My hair was badly needing protein so I used a whole packet of unflavored gelatin (ended up being about 1 3/4 TBS) in about a cup of distilled water with 1/2 tap of apple cider vinegar. Squirted it on damp clarified hair with the moisture squeezed out, applying in sections. Just dribbled it on in cooled liquid form because I couldn't wait longer. Left it on just a few minutes, maybe 3-4. Never felt particularly hard but felt almost waxy or slightly straw-like but rinsed out pretty easily. Used Deva One Condition to co-wash the ends and left it on as a normal condish, not a deep condish. Styled as usual with a leave-in with protein I only use sometimes, but no additional protein. Curls are much healthier, firmer, a bit tighter, curling further up the shaft, and the frizz looks more even around my hair in a good-for-volume kind of way rather than a hair-is-shattered-all-over type way. Most importantly my curls definitely stayed stronger all day, and sort of lasted overnight. Will try a treatment again in a few weeks to see how it helps! Now I know the signs of over conditioning and have learned the importance of researching the same topic in lots of different settings because there really are so many different curly needs and approaches that it might take you hearing the same idea in lot of different contexts to fully understand what your situation may be.
