Dr. Chris Wells and Tina Harlow talk about overexcitability in relation to giftedness. Do they always go hand in hand?
Enjoy discussions like this and so much more at the 2024 Dabrowski Congress! This biennial gathering place will be held July 11-13 in Denver, Colorado as well as virtually. You can register here: dabrowskicenter.org/register
The Congress is for those with an interest in the Theory of Positive Disintegration developed by Dr. Kazimierz Dabrowski. The theory provides an alternative perspective to the pathology paradigm in regards to intense inner experiences; seeing them as potentially transformational processes instead of detrimental illnesses.

Kids/adults with conduct disorder can also be gifted... yes? Prisons are full of them (many 2e AND with heavy trauma histories). Was the kid also assessed for 2e? Also curious if the kid who tested at 105 have any learning challenges at school? Was this child 2e? Was that considered and tested for (i.e. auditory processing, visual-spacial challenges, dysgraphia, dyslexia, dyscalcula, ADHD etc.)? Just curious? Thanks.

Yes, of course, people with other diagnoses like conduct disorder can also be gifted. The child I mentioned in this video was indeed assessed for 2e, and there had been previous assessments that factored into why it was a compelling example for me at the time (although not so clear now, years later). What I didn't mention here but thought about later is how many messages I've received from teachers and clinicians over the past couple of years thanking us for bringing to light the fact that OE is not only for the gifted. People regularly express gratitude for our efforts to open up this non-pathologizing perspective beyond those who can be identified as intellectually gifted. They see OEs clearly in their neurodivergent children, students, or clients who aren't necessarily gifted/2e but have strong OEs. We have a long way in understanding the nature of OEs and positive disintegration outside of the gifted community, but some early efforts are underway.
