Does REN's 'MONEY GAME 3' Take Top Song Honours? Pro Guitarist Reacts @RenMakesMusic #reaction #ren #renreaction

It’s Grieg Piano Concerto No 16 A Minor, the arpeggiated sequence is very similar to the intro to For Joe & the wee bit he hums is the Money Game melody that he uses throughout all three Money Games now. The instrumentation in this is so well composed. I like the classical element. Using that Money Game melody as a recurring motif & having it almost divided into movements really gives it a grand finale feel and fits with using the opening chords from the concerto at the start. Props to the pianist & the string quartet. It’s so well done. Cool reaction Mike xx

@@michaelgoyettemusic No it's not Grieg Piano Concerto No 16 A Minor. Ren said on twitch he wrote it with help from a classical pianist. I listened to the entire Grieg Piano Concerto No 16 A Minor and heard nothing that sounds like the start of this song.

Thank you so much, that's been bugging me since it the song came out! I knew I recognised those chords from somewhere but I couldn't place it. I've been humming the tune that follows (in what I now know is the Grieg piece) and had it stuck in my head. I've been going through various piano concertos to find it but I'd forgotten to check that one! It's not exactly the same, but close enough. I love that Ren quotes and pulls inspiration from such varied sources.

Ren’s description of this piece: “I grew up watching films like Scarface, Godfather, and shows like Breaking Bad. I love stories of character development from innocence to pure corruption and wanted to try and capture that in song, because I hadn’t really heard it done. It’s the story of the life of a character called Jimmy, who slowly sinks more and more into corruption and moral depravity. I also liked the juxtaposition of putting rap over a classical piano and string arrangement, two things that shouldn’t necessarily work together, that combine to create something pretty unique.”
@rovcanada19 ай бұрын
Yo! Ren wrote the piano score, but he had to use a midi for one particular part that he physically could not play. He enrolled the help of a classical pianist to see if it was humanly playable. The pianist eventually made it playable (without using midi), and that's what we got. I think the pianist is known a Charlie, and there will be more to come on the BTS stuff which will be coming out soon. ETA: Ren discussing how he composed both piano and strings. This leaves no ambiguity: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f9J_mc2g3bvPfXU.htmlsi=mLTxoGf51APoUMYb&t=3123

I think the only reason he had it on a midi file was too give it to the pianist to study and he didn't record the studio version yet. He said yesterday on Twitch he played the entire thing for the studio version but he obviously couldn't play the whole thing for the video.

It was recorded live. The video was only cut once before the rain came in when Ren was in the wheelchair. Took around 8 times to get the first part down, second part with the strings took about 18 times. Confirmed by Ren through his livestream on Twitch.
@rodennis4189 ай бұрын
I must have missed that. I heard the part about the one hidden cut moving the mic when he takes the jacket off.
@robmarar9 ай бұрын
I watched the twitch stream of Ren as well as the interview with Knox Hill posted today and Ren said that the main reason they placed the cut when they panned around the wheel chair is because they had to set up the string section properly and make sure he did that on a true one take. Ren explained that because of the rain machine they set up, he couldn't practically do multiple takes of the ending. He laughed saying he only had one suit and once everything was wet they were done. In fact they had to pay the violinist on the left extra money to replace her bow which got wet and was ruined. They practiced/rehearsed the ending with the strings 18 times, but it was a true (Hand To God) ONE TAKE for the ending. You're spot on about Ren saying the 1st part was around 8 times before Ren and Sam where satisfied with that take. ✌😁

His director Sam gave an interview with knox hill who said they had that building for only one day and they didnt have time for the water pressure to build back up, nor did they have a 2nd wardrobe so that is probably the reason for the cut. Get the rest of it perfect in several 1 takes then film the last scene very very carefully in one shot.

The strings: They were playing Money Game 1 & 2 melodies (same as Ren's mirror scene). Ren stated that he was profoundly moved on set when the quartet fired up behind him, despite the fact that they were playing the tune he gave them to play. I'm thinking that we are going to see a lot more strings in Ren's future productions! ETA: Ren discussing the composition: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f9J_mc2g3bvPfXU.htmlsi=mLTxoGf51APoUMYb&t=3123

Musical genius. That first vocal bit is evocative of Violet and sets the stage for this being another storytelling song about generational abuse/damage. And when the string quartet starts to play they are being evocative of "For Joe", introducing the concept of su*c*de to the song, foreshadowing what is to come. Then the quartet blends that with Money Game theme. In that moment Ren sums up all three parts of Money Game: the money game is suicide. Amazing stuff. Blessings.

This isn't a music video - it's theatre - a mini movie. Something completely new. Melodic rapping with spoken word poetry, song, acting, narration, and classical elements. Increasingly we realise that Ren isn't 'only' a mega-talented genre hopping creative artist, but at heart; a Story-Teller. One moreover who is also a powerful Social Commentator - unafraid to tackle harsh truths. As he said; "this is not 'entertainment - it's real life." Ren doesn't lecture or harange, he just reveals a character and life story that we can all relate to at some level.

The timing of each sequence ..... and all of this can be represented by the total confidence Ren has in the wheelchair being in the exact place for him when ( at the line " The Doctor sighs and says I don't think you'll be walking again " ... ) he, unflinchingly, drops into the seat, knowing it will be perfectly placed for him to do so. Absolutely mind blowing creativity at every level. A massive shout out to Samuel for his amazing work. What a team these two are. Their ability to share the exact same vision for each song and video is unparalleled. Brilliant reaction Michael. Thanks brother. 🙏

@@michaelgoyettemusic If its possible I think the end of the scavenger hunt, while nowhere near the production MG3 is, moved me more than MG3. At the end he gave the gents 2 briefcases, 1 opened and full of money or 1 locked... They could take the money no strings attatched or light the money on fire and get what was locked in the other briefcase. They decided to be greedy and light the first one on fire and in the second one was a bunch of seashells and an apple with a note that said bite me. Once bitten a video played that started with the story of adam and eden and ended with a disertation on free will and the things we are doing to ourselves....that we have the choice to change. The end of the scavenger hunt had me in tears and contemplating humanity. MG3 had me doing the same but without the tears. .

I love his playing of the piano in the background, and it sounds like he does some ornamentation of the melody in places as well. Beautiful work on his part. I noticed that when the strings play the first time, the violins play the tune that Ren hums in "The Money Game". Oh also the tune he hums when looking in the mirror was from the previous two songs in this series, as well as the tune from "Violet's Tale". They did an amazing job blending in tunes from other Ren songs, and imagery from his other videos like the wheelchair in Hi Ren, and even standing over the gun like he did standing over the petrol can in the first Money Game. Brilliant, brilliant work done on this video production!

I really think the point of it all is not telling us we shouldn’t be comfortable or not enjoy our lives but to realize that the goal of always feeling you never have enough will always leave you empty.. you can “fill your coffers” with money or gold or wheat or whatever the things you value but in the end you will always feel empty if you don’t fill your mind and heart with the things that truly matter.. The pianist has an earpiece that lets him hear Ren's microphone for cues. Its from Money Game parts 1&2, if you didn't think what that piece of music you were questioning is before the end.😮 He is wearing a mic. The song is from Money Game 1 and 2. Ren likes arpeggios, and so the piano is reminiscent of various classical themes. Funnily enough, he reminds me of Frank Zappa in a way. Always some humo[u]r there, never afraid to tell it like it is, always carefully worked out, never caring about switching genres between songs or even during songs. Musically, chalk & cheese, but as regards the approach to creating art [for that's what it is] they seem cut from a similar cloth. Also Lennon comes to mind at times with the message. Rollercoaster is an understatement. I don't think I've seen or felt anything like this. Hi Ren made me feel hopeful for being able to overcome and accept your demons. This just took me through the entire emotional gamut, heading towards the finish with dread that Jimmy wasn't going to overcome the driving need to impress his father (and being right). Finishing with a callback to the first MG: "...a child into a killer, his finger on the trigger of a money game." Just WOW.

The "safety" cut occurs just when the wheelchair is swung around - the camera zooms into the dark back of the chair until it fills the screen - the cut occurs here. Ren said that they couldn't wait another day for the floor to dry if they had to do a retake after the rain came down. BTW, it was raining on the metal roof in the large shed at this farm, during parts of the shooting, which was quite loud. Sam says Ren was able to overcome this during post production. I'd like to know the exact miking used. I suspect that it was a boom mike, (if so, it would have been a major pain to keep it out of frame), perhaps with selective additions from an ambience mike. You can hear his feet shuffling sometimes and the room acoustics of the dropped/bouncing bottle.

Sick Boi #1 - he did it!! Yep, he did the first bit of piano playing, mic on his jacket collar on the left. It was a live 'one take' - and a half... (from his live stream on Thurs 12th) they had a cut before the rain section - he only had one suit. He said a highlight for him on that shoot was hearing his composition for the strings being played - I think for the first time. All in all - it is fluffing genius.

Yo! I don't think I have seen a Ren video affect you so deeply. I don't think your blue lights suited this one. Never mind. I have heard "Hi Ren" about a hundred times so when I have seen this a hundred times I will see how good it is. Right now this is his great masterpiece. One thing I experience again and again with Ren is joy and disappointment at the same time. I want it to be like Parts One and Two because I like familiarity but WOW! Yo!

Watching Rens art and storytelling is so captivating and immersive, the last time I remember being this immersed in music and the captivating stories is when Pink Floyd released The Wall

Everybody else has said what should be said - but I wanted to mention his callback to his King Dotta Dis - “you’re losing the race, you’re just serving the King” with the same cadence. Even with something this serious he’s true to his love of Hip Hop. Mad respect.

Ren wrote all the music and was playing at the beginning but said even though he wrote it some of the music was beyond him to play...lol. Ren paints a picture, musically, visually, performance, production... there isn't a single weak link. It is live (there's a mike on his shoulder) it is almost a 1 take but Ren said there's a cut just before the rain (as he put it the point of no return) he only has the 1 suit...lol.

I watched the twitch stream of Ren as well as the interview with Knox Hill; plus the Knox & Sam interview, posted today and Ren said that the main reason they placed the cut when they panned around the wheel chair is because they had to set up the string section properly and make sure he did that on a true one take. 😁❤cheers brother!.

Ren was playing piano in the beginning. He also wrote all the piano and strings arrangements, as well as being a 50% partner with Samuel in the video production. He had a team of friends around him doing all sorts of logistical things..for instance on the day of recording they didn't have a gun, and Connor had to specifically source a Colt 45 ..in the UK, where no one has guns..:) That particular gun is real but modified so it can't fire. There's a rumour going around that the 2nd pianist was Knox Hill (to be confirmed).

When he put the gun to his head my memory flashed back many years past when one of my brothers was in his room holding a gun to his head, I didn't see that part, my mom did and she slowly and carefully got it away from him and with out turning around she called me over to take it and hide it away. I held that thing in my hand as it was was some venomous snake about to strike, with two fingers on the grip I carried it to mom's room and held my breath as she talked him down. My brother was ill, physically and none of us knowing for sure from what, until the coughing and blood became obvious. He spent two years in hospital in Florida, where we were living at the time, in the tuberculosis ward. The TB he contracted from his father when he visited him. After that visit awhile later our dad was in hospital for TB, none of us knew then that my brother carried that virus, several years later, just percolating away in his lungs. Of course all his family and friends were tested, lucky no one got it, since most had been vaccinated years before. After that ONE time, only one time in my entire life I ever touched a gun, any loaded hand gun. I never went near another one since. I am now 74 years old and hate guns because of the insane way some people use them, either for good or for ill, there is never a reason to own a gun. That is my own personal opinion, others may disagree and spout all kinds of reasons when saying they are safe, and fun or for security. We don't live in the wild west of old, but maybe we still do. I will still never have a firearm in my home, ever! Other than that, the whole story was outstanding! Ren of course outstanding. A quick and condensed life of one man with a father that only cared about money, what about Jimmy? Did his father ever show pride? I don't think so. I know my father never showed pride in any of his children.

I’m glad I found you way back down the Ren rabbit hole. Your appreciation of Ren is not lost on me. It’s a true quality. I think saying it’s in the same vicinity as hi Ren is spot on. I don’t know if hi Ren can ever be surpassed as its topic is interpersonal. Hmm however money is clearly an important factor, as ‘they’ don’t listen to what we the people value. We want change, wealth and power more equal distribution. And less division between communities and cultures. Yo-yo I always make it to the end Michael. Great work. When are you going to air some of your own work? 🎈🎈🎈

Yo. I finally put my finger on it…..The Jimmy character reminds me of Dickie Roper, the villain in The Night Manager, BBC miniseries 2016. Dickie was a product of privilege and good education. The video sequence where Jimmy is in the wheel chair and gradually pivoted around to show the string quartet behind him was so cool. The verse about being parasites in a petri dish, cannibal minds, and mold consuming all ‘til it dies is absolutely brilliant.
