Is it worth scenting and curing your Kokanee bait or corn? Do Kokanee respond to scents? I put that question to the test using identical setups and pin unscented vs scented Corn against each other on the water fishing from my ‪@OldTownCanoeKayak‬ AutoPilot 120.

Here’s my thing…I have noticed that some days, scent catches as many as unscented and then there are days that scented really outperforms unscented. I have not seen a day where unscented noticeably outperforms my scented gear (or buddy’s unscented gear) so for me, it doesn’t hurt to scent up my tackle - plus it’s fun and makes me feel like I have “the secret” 😅

So I just discovered your videos and THANK YOU! I used to fish with Granddad about 45-50 years ago on Priest Lake in the Northern part of Idaho. You could practically hold your hand out and they would jump in it, there were so many. Our daily limits back then were 50 fish! I just recently returned to fishing the lake and know that fishing has completely changed for Kokanee in the NW. I've been trying to use all the old gear (yes, still have it all) and been skunked every day. Thanks to your videos, I see dodgers appear to be much more effective, trolling speeds matter, leader lengths and so on. I am heading back out in the morning, armed with new equipment to make something happen. I'll try to post back here with some results over the next few days.

This one is tough, because it depends on what role scent plays. Does scent only entice them to bite at close range, or does the slick put out draw them in from a distance, after which they predominantly sight attack? If the former, then an experiment with scent on one side and an unscented lure 8 to 10 feet to the other side could be said to yield discernible data, but if the latter then it's difficult to gauge how much the unscented rig is actually benefiting from being next to a scented rig. The answer would seem to be to run the experiment with alternating scented and unscented rigs down, but the problem there is the rigs cannot then be in the same position at the same time in the same conditions. You're removing one variable and adding more. It would be interesting to see if spreading the lures farther apart negatively impacted the unscented rig. If they were, say, 14 or more feet apart would there be a difference? Would that be indicative of anything at all? It's a damn good thing you get to eat your guinea pigs, Tyler, or it would be maddening trying to pull trends out of this. ;)

Great videos. Keep it up! My vote is snake oil. I’ll probably keep scenting my corn because it’s fun. I remember 30 years ago we never scented our shoepeg and caught a lot of Kokanee. Good advice on the salt firming up the corn. 👍

I just love your comparison videos. All variables can not be accounted for in this one. S turn drop might advantage one or the other etc. I would also like to see how artificial corn kernels might produce for kokanee? I also hope you stick with the Autopilot kayak for future videos. Thanks the the entertainment.

Great video! I think corn is the best scent. It would be interesting to see if a unscented artificial corn would produce. I bet it would not do well.

As a new lake fisher here on the west side I’m learning a lot from your vids,thank you! What happens with Kokanee in the Fall? Is that when they spawn? Thanks again
@kokaneeoutdoors5188
@kokaneeoutdoors5188 3 жыл бұрын
Depending on the strain of Kokanee and where you are they spawn anywhere from August to September. My local lake usually shuts down with the spawn and you won't catch next years spawners until ice on. This year however, we are catching next years spawners and it is almost October. They are growing exceptionally fast too. They are already at 12 to 12 and a half inches. So, until it gets too nasty of weather to fish, we are going after them. Tight Lines!!!

BTW, I understand at Cordelaine Lake in Idaho they were catching last years spawners in October. With Kokanee, for every rule there seems to be an exception.

Can you catch kokanee on a paddle kayak. I'd like to know if it's possible because that's all I have. And how should I set it up.
@spiltmilt
@spiltmilt 3 жыл бұрын
You can. You have to adjust position of the rod holders. Generally I am going to run the rods pointing forward out of the way. The other option is to jig for Kokanee which is more easily done in the spring/early summer when they are schooled up.

I tried some of the old goats lures last weekend. The bite was great but the catch rate was awful . Did you have trouble with the double hook rigs like I did ? Should I retie my harnesses to the slit shot hooks size 4 or do have a better suggestions. Fish are averaging around 19 inches to 21 inches? Also, do you know of a rubber net replacement other than black , net freaks out koccanees for sure ?
