Does Skateboard Truck Size REALLY MATTER?

When you're trying to pick out the right pair of trucks we're always told to match our axle width with our deck width, or at least stay within a quarter inch difference
But exactly how much play can you get from the width of your trucks compared to the width of your board???
In this video I test out how a set of trucks suited to an 8.5" board feels on a 9" deck and the results are surprising!
What size trucks do you guys ride in comparison to your deck width?

Another thing you can do to help size smaller trucks to a bigger board is to get wider wheels. Asymmetric wheels that are offset are the best, but they’re kind of hard to come by. The best example is the oj mini combo shape. Other than that there are a lot of old school wheels like the powell mini cubics and rat bones, but they’re usually 60mm and up.
@LeonPaxton
@LeonPaxton Жыл бұрын
Dude, I actually thought of that too! The only problem for me is that when I have wider wheels I find it harder to do tail slides because the riding surface of the wheel is bigger and grips to the ledge more so maybe i have to change to Independent trucks to make the wheels sit in from the base plate or try 101a wheels that are harder and won't grip to the ledge as much 🤔

Wheel with is one of the only things I haven’t been able to notice a difference with in skating. I know lots of dudes swear by skinny ones for bluntslides and tailslides, but I haven’t really noticed a difference. I usually go with wider ones because I think they look a little cooler. I also have thought that they might not flatspot as easy since you would have more surface area you would have to wear away. I can see them being sticker on slides though. I usually have stuff waxed up either way haha.

This is interesting, I've heard about other skaters actually sizing their trucks up a half size for more stability and heft for flip tricks. However when I tried this it became really annoying as the board would become extremely sensitive to scoop. I'll keep this in mind as ive been trying to lighten my setup as well so maybe i'll go for the even/smaller truck size. Love the content man!

That 9 inch anti-hero has a wild wide wheel base too. Plus thunder trucks, they make it even wider. So that alone is going to make your board feel way heavy when popping it. I rode that board with ace 66 classics (9.35 axle width) it felt great and super fun.

I need some sweet-looking Trucks for the Downward Spiral Deck (Welcome x Nine Inch Nails TDS Album Cover 9.0" Skateboard Deck SKU: us38416506980425 Size 9.0) I just picked up. I haven't skated in years and the chances of me getting out skating is probably slim to none, but I’d love to get some wild Trucks to mount on it for my Deck Wall. I need to get a Tony Hawk deck now too. I have my McGill which I rode when I was actively skating, I’ll probably end up completing my collection with Lance, Steve, and Rodney, and Tommy. Thats quite a bit to shell out for a whole Series though. I’ve just been buying one here and there as I see them in the store. I’d normally say they have to be Independent, but I’m not sure I want to support them after they folded to the mob and changed their Logo. 😢👎🏻 🤘🏻 My Bone density isn't all that great due to health issues and having to be on Prednisone multiple times. I’d probably fracture something if I tried.🛹

8.5 trucks (which are technically 8.375) on an 8.25 deck, 3 speed washers on the inside, 52mm green powell dragons. Edge of deck and wheels are perfectly flush. Works perfect for my flips.
@PHeMoX
@PHeMoX Жыл бұрын
I definitely prefer to have the axle flush if possible, so any kind of primo stand won't 'snap to the floor' like a mousetrap the wrong direction should you ever land primo or purposefully try freestyle stuff. Thing is, one of my boards is the 9.13" version of the Andy Anderson 7-ply deck and I have 8.5" trucks with wider freestyle wheels on it. It's still flush with the deck that way too. Just like the washer trick. And unless you really want to have the most comfortable balance point in like 5050 grinds locked into one side (heel or toes), you probably won't really notice it much. With your setup I would say the direction the board would tip over from primo position is the correct direction and probably not something unmanageable. But I had setups were it would snap to the floor the board direction (from primo to flat on the ground) and stuff like that destroys my back. I definitely prefer a flush setup and stable primo, should it ever happen accidentally or purposefully. To be honest, I never understood why some people would go wider than their deck. Makes no sense to me.
@LeonPaxton
@LeonPaxton Жыл бұрын
Yeah due, that's very true! I'm not doing too many flip tricks these days though so that problem doesn't really bother me but I can see how that would be a big problem for people. Well Dan Corrigan rides wider trucks than his board so he can see where his axle not is from the top view which apparently helps him aim his trucks to lock into grinds more but that would just feel too weird to me lol

That was exactly the question I asked myself today, 8.5'' trucks on a 9'' deck? I recently bought a Jart Dirty Pool Before Death 9'' deck and still have almost new ACE AF1 55's lying around. In addition relatively wide wheels, Powell Peralta SSF G-Slides 56mm or optional Spitfire F4 Radial 58mm, so that with additional washers the nuts probably no longer fit completely on the threads. I’ve got to admire being able to ride that deck. I’ve got the same one but haven’t ridden it yet bar like 10 mins. 9” with 33” length and 15” wheel base is massive. And then Thunders too lenghtening the wheel base a little more even than like an Indie or Ace. If you want a possibly lighter pop you could go for Indie Titaniums. Light (not entirely as light as the Thunders) and shorter wheel base. Though I know you aren’t a big Indie fan.

The lock in fulls are a wide wheel so they make the board quite balanced. Slappy 5050s lock in better I think cause you're not sliding all over the place with a wider axle. Tried to go light once and got trapped trying to cloud walk and it limited my skating. Theory now is start heavier and then you have more flexibility for styles and spots - rough streets add risers and heavier tankier wheels but lighter trucks, beach curbs and dancing widen the board add rails with lighter trucks etc etc Between the flexibility to try new things but keep your practice weight and the strength benefits it is has panned out to be a better option for me not just financially (can build from sale items combining wheel and truck combos) but the ability to alter my set up no matter the spot or style I want to skate but keep the weight dialed is flash.

@LeonPaxton
@LeonPaxton 2 ай бұрын
I think as technical skating got more popular back in the day, people were finding smaller boards to be easier for flip tricks and technical tricks but then there was no stability or comfort on smaller boards like that. These days skating has progressed so much and set ups are being customised to tick a lot of boxes at once 🤔 Then you have anomalies like Franky Villani who skates a 9.1" deck and is super technical with it too lol

Hi! I am Planning a 9.125 egg deck, but keep a Thunder 149, in my idea should be ok, cause a egg taper way more than a standard popsicle on the trucks, so even if it’s 9.125, it’s going to be like 8.875 on the trucks, and that should be fine, as i anyway like to ride half inch smaller trucks, (usually 147 in a 8.5) do you think I my calculations are right? Usually for example if you have a 9.0 egg and 9.0 trucks the trucks will stick out a little bit so a quarter inch down usually works pretty well, so 9.0 egg with 8.75 trucks. But this really depends on how much your egg tappers as well.

But it actually makes a differences if you ride lets say 8.25" trucks on a 8.25" board or if you ride 8.5" trucks on that same board, especially when it comes to flips - you need a less strength for tipping over the board with smaller trucks
