Those christian groups having a formalised style of worship and strong liturgies, can mean that its easy to sit back and not engage intellectually as a lay-person, so can unwittingly enable ignorance. But the more serious people will think things through, as well as enjoy the benefits of the well-structured approach.

We are definetly encouraged to engage a lot with all aspects of the faith. Catholic saint Jerome who compiled the bible said "ignorance of scripture is ignorance of Christ". What we just witness in modernity is any type of Christain having a hard time retaining the faith on their children because there are so many distractions and pitfalls. I know that happened to me before i came back to the faith.

Yes, churches do need to improve in this area. When I was a teen with questions, my parents put a couple apologetics books in front of me and basically said, "read about it." I really appreciated that. It felt like they were respecting my intelligence by encouraging me to research instead of just having blind faith.
