Finally! I've been waiting for someone to review Spanish knives. In general, Spanish knives are excellent quality and price. They are lifetime knives. High end brands are Joker, Cudeman, CDS, Jeo-Tec, J&V, and Muela, with many of them made in Albacete Spain (East Coast). Do you see the BS9 stamp on the blade. That stamp means that it is specifically made for bushcraft/survival, and stands for Buschcraft Supervivencia 9--Extremely high quality knife. My favorite BS9 knife is the Cudeman Quercus BS9. It's a beast. Thank you for reviewing. Don't forget the beast folders offered by Jeo-Tec, Cudeman, and J&V.

Since Roman times, Troops on the Iberian peninsula have fielded far superior blades of a Falcata or Large Spatha type, not to mention good knives, and armor. But their hey-day is in the 1500's -1600's The fact that the swords from Toledo didn't break time and again under combat stresses, when others would have, was what enabled the Conquistador's to fight hand to hand as much and as long as they did.

As a Spaniard who lives in Toledo (Spain), I know a friend who has worked in one of the sword factories because the making of swords is a tradition here since the Middle Ages. There they make many old swords that they sell to tourists or for those who practice fencing, but they also make knives for the army of many countries. On one occasion, many years ago, he told me that they were making knives for the American Army. I don't know if they are still making them, because my friend no longer works on it. But it is true, in Spain the manufacture of cutlery is an ancient tradition, and the most famous provinces for it are Toledo and Albacete. If you ever see knives for kitchen or for whatever use and you see that they are made in Albacete or Toledo, they will surely be of good quality.

Still on the top man. But we thing a knife may cost 120 euros or less. The heat treatment that we give to this knifes make a flexible blade, easy to sharpen, resistance to corrosion. In this country we have wet and dry weather. Knives are prepared to be used in this different conditions. Olive tree is one of the hardest woods to work, and this knives work very, very well with that wood, pine, curly birch, walnut etc.. The people who doesn't understand a lot of steels, believe, having a cpm, an vg10 is having the best steel. Look victorinox, Buck.. They used other budgets steel but the heat treatment give them strenth and flexibility. Kabar knifes are using 1095 carbon steel, the heat treatment is so cool. Sometimes is not the steel, is the way you work with it

I'll also get the Nomad, for a larger option and that sweet convex. Maybe a scandi as well, like the Ember. It's the scandi variation of the Bushcrafter, which is a wonderful full flat. Great video and knives. I've had a Joker folding slipjoint knife, which I've been using for Edc over the last year. Lovely little traditional blade. One of my favourite to edc here in the UK. Like yourself I didn't know much about the brand when I purchased. But since have done a little research and believe the region of Spain these are made in is well known for its cutlers. Much like Sheffield here in the UK is. It has a long standing guild that Joker are members of. The guild are known for keeping their quality standards high is everything that comes out of their factories. As some have said before Spanish steel used to be thought of as some of the best in the world, and I see no reason not to believe that still.

I love the looks of this knife and the orange scales...hard to lose a knife with bright orange handle. That leather sheath looks to be of a great quality. In some full tang knives I prefer a good leather sheath over kydex; however, the opposite with small knives like Esee Izula. Those two other knives are good looking knives as well, especially the larger Nomad. Looking forward to your review on them. Great review, Aaron! Joker is one of a handful of Spanish makers that are breaking out of the traditional mold, diversifying their catalogs with steels that are not 1.4116 (they all do a hell of a treat on those, but it's been done in Spain forever), current handle materials, kydex sheaths and so forth, while on examples like the Lynx here paying attention to a correct stock thickness for a knife that size AND ditching the ubiquitous hollow grind. Some of them are also catching up to folder trends, like the Salamandra Temis, a bearing flipper in N690 AND WITH A POCKET CLIP!! (c'mon Spain, putting a clip on a knife is not that difficult). Another brand to keep an eye on is Nieto.

I bought the Joker Ursus after seeing your reviews. Fantastic knife and everything your are saying is true in my experience. The only negative is that the leather sheath needs to be wet formed to avoid it being cut when re-sheathing. I cut through the sheath that came with the knife and they were nice enough to replace it. Now that it’s formed, it fits perfectly and no issue with getting in and out. Fully agree the snaps on the belt loop are a drawback on the sheath as well. It never feels secure, so I’m going to mod it and maybe make my own Kydex sheath as well.

I just went down the Joker rabbit hole recently. Can say the quality is great, but for the price? Amazing. Have a Nomad and it feels excellent in the hand. Haven't put it through it's paces much yet but it fills a sweet spot gap in my collection as far as blade length, width grind etc. The sheath is excellent and the ferro rod is one of the best I've used. Add the matching handle slick factor and you have a pretty sweet knife. Got my GF one of the traditional bushcraft style blades in Sandvik for Christmas

Simply put, asking "does Spain make good knives" is a lot like asking "does Italy make good pasta". As has been pointed out, Toledo steel (from Toledo Spain) has always been of the highest quality. In the past, swords made in Toledo were highly prized. Toledo sword-makers are even found in historical fiction, serious and not-so-serious. "Alo! My name is Enigo Montoya! You killed my father! Prepare to die!" []

Yes that's how it is. Romans were praising Iberian forgers, too. Moreover, I wouldn't expect this mainstream "knife guy", to know such things. Probably, only able to point where Spain is on the map...

Nice video, beautiful knife. FYI, for centuries Spain made some of the the finest swords in the world. A sword from Toledo Spain was highly prized.

I bought one on Amazon, in Bohler K720 steel. The blade had corrosion marks on both sides :-( The blade had some sort of oil on it and a plastic wrapper. I bought another one, with Sandvik steel. That one is in perfect condition.

Joker, J&V, Jeo-Tec and Ifield all grate! And I believe are the same parent company. Cudeman is also a very fine knife as well.

I own a Muela Husky RWL34, basically a hunting knife and a Nieto Terrano Scandi N690co, a bushcraft knife. Have a look at the Nieto Terrano Scandi or Flat in N690co or O2. I think the Nieto N690co in Scandi is an amazing knife, and best bushcraft knife, prized half or a third its value. Spanish blades were some of the western worlds best since the dark ages.

Nice. I thought the Spanish-made knives were forgotten. I have an Aitor Magnum Bowie circa 1995. I was in college when my Mom gifted me the knife because I was always doing jungle treks. Steel is strong, keeps sharp and easy to sharpen but the sandblast finish was weak. Corrosion started on some areas of the sandblast finish so I always clean and oil this knife. Once upon Spain was known for its sharp, high quality steelware. Most Spanish cutleries were bought out due to intense competition with less expensive knives on the market.

The Chinese did a lot of damage to the Spanish cutlery industry because they counterfeit everything and sell fake products that later discredit the original brand. But there are still good factories in Spain that make very good products, some have even moved their production to China, because that way they can at least control the manufacturing process. But I think that what I say is not news to anyone, the markets are full of counterfeits made in China.

The Victorinox bushcraft knives are made in Spain, that should tell you something about the ability of Spain to produce good knives.

I have come to know from your videos and others that the Joker knives are no joke. I am looking to acquire the Nomad and the Nessmuk. However on Amazon they do not offer the Nessmuk but the Canadian. Is the Joker Canadian the Nessmuk. I am from the Adirondacks and would like to honor George Washington Sears in carrying a variant of his knife while trekking through the same wilderness he did. Thank you for your reviews and insight. I find them most informing. Keep up the great work.
