We moved to a remote corner of the Isle of Skye with very limited 4G reception and incredibly slow, copper broadband - not great for uploading KZfaq videos!!
As a last resort, we turned to STARLINK satellite broadband... but would it work in a secluded glen surrounded by mountains & forests? Find out in this video!

great video guys, we traveled to sky a couple of years ago, amazing place and totally loved it and plan of heading back in the further. on our trip, we had mixed internet connection, this seems like the perfect solution for such trip. Thank you for taking the time to put this video together.

I've got mine up on an old scaffolding pole, with a cut out for the cable. So far it survived Skye's weather over the last year but never got to test it in 90mph winds last January which almost took my garage roof off, but will be paying a close eye on the dish tomorrow night when there's a bit of storm blowing in!

Yeah, you'll no thave an issue with it once it is well secured. The only downside is that the power consumption can be quite high, as much as 100w plus when using the full bandwidth, eg, speedtests etc. I have a backup 4G that automatically used as backup in case Starlink fails, and it never used it. Enjoy the fast internet!

Works all over teh UK now. I am on the West coast of Scotland on the NC500 using SL and it's working well. Nice to finally have an option better than Voda 4G up here!

We just became full time RV travelers in USA and needed internet so husband can work remote. Starlink is amazing, up in the mountains of Tennesee or on the Gulf coast in Alabamanso far. Bit heavy on the monthly payment but hey ho gotta have it. Loving the videos and hi from a fellow Geordie.

Great news guys! I was very nervous for you and the setup. About 5 years ago when I was looking at remote scottish properties the broadband internet connection was the biggest concern and off put. But with this it puts any location within reach, love your views out the window and the pup randomly appearing!

Very glad positive results for you. It's mostly about location, obstruction and elevation aimed at satellites. Descent internet with a few cut outs is far better than no internet. Great to see you and Jack handsome as ever. Take care

@@livingtheskyelifeou are indeed fortunate with having a successful connection. It isn’t just luck. This effort by Starlink is unparalleled regardless of the extreme happy people or extreme annoyed. Rural internet in the US is a significant problem largely solved by Starlink. City dwellers will mock and abuse the success of Starlink, but the truth is your reception is massively better than ours in the US. But I’m a rural viewer and understand the challenges we face and will always be happy you have a fantastic connection! Congratulations When it doesn’t work, it is because you are in a yet to be active cell of the satellite constellation. Starlink has been very open about their rollout.

Perfect situation to use it, no other options and it's really not bad. I've had it for about 9 months and used is successfully at multiple locations in center of USA. Only times I had issues were in places with lots of trees and very little visible sky.

I agree that drone footage was fab!! My spouse & I have been playing around with our drone...still having problems with getting good color shots from our camera's software, but will keep trying. We have a 2nd property in the mountains of Colorado in a stunning location...but haven't been able to get the same stunning shots that Willie has been getting. More practice is what we need. Willie makes it look easy; but those of us who have attempted, know it is a skill that can improve & isn't usually a "plug and play" kind of scenario.

Ha. This is fun. We got our Starlink about six weeks ago and absolutely love it! When we moved to rural North Carolina, we were worried too about our internet since I upload videos to my channel. We tried everything. We are not having as much luck with upload speeds as you have but I will be giving it a go again soon. I took a break from KZfaq in Nov and Dec be except for watching, glad you like it. I hadn't known anyone who has it.

Aiden on @BuildingAcerView went for Starlink a while back and seems to be very happy with it. He was even recently interviewed by a foreign language TV station about it. Aiden learned the hard way that they can and do get blown around/over when not secured!

Yeah, we saw videos all over the world, but couldn’t find anyone using it in the highlands, or even Scotland, so there was a bit of doubt/worry there - hence making this video.

Hopefully the latency improves over time. It's not as good as they claimed it would be but for normal use it won't matter. From 30ms-94ms I noticed. Would be interesting to know if it's worth the price. Being able to put it pretty much anywhere and move house without it being fixed to the address etc is a big plus. Glad it's working and the right solution for you.

They've announced plans to improve the latency down to below 20ms

Where I live at 63N the latency has varied a lot since sometimes we have got connections from Norway to Australia. It happens when we hook up to a polar laser chain that has not connected directly with Europe yet. Got to hope Starlink will put up at least one ground station north of 60 degrees, but so far they seem to have canceled the ones they planned. The lasers do work, but the ping will vary with where the signals are connected.

Hi after ages on the waiting list we had ours last March for internet in the Cambrian mountains in wales. Really pleased with it. It’s been super reliable and fast speeds of up to 478 Mbps download. It’s not cheap but at least the monthly fee has reduced since we’ve installed it. The only annoying part is the size of the cable end you need to drill a hole for into the property. Definitely a game changer for us. Well done Elon

That's really interesting, thanks for recording the video. Do they give you fittings to attach to a building and what sort of speeds were you getting previously? Did you have wired phone broadband? What is your mobile phone signal like? Again, love both of your personalities!

No problem - we made it because we didn’t want others worrying the way we did. They don’t supply fittings, just the base, but it has holes for attaching to a flat roof. They also supply alternative mounts for different scenarios, but you have to buy them. The speeds before were crazy slow 2mbps at best! That was wired copper broadband. Mobile signal fluctuates between nothing and weak. And thanks - very kind!

As I relocated for work in a remote area near Aberdeen I was in a similar situation internet wise and I ordered Starlink myself. I don't have as much access to sky but even with that I get anything between 120-250 mbps in the middle of nowhere in the forest as well, on a very rare occasion the connection drops but that happens if I'm lucky to catch it haha

Just to say I have recently found and am enjoying your story. If you check the voltage on your router it is likely to be around 12V DC. So you can run without mains power - no point using a 12v or 24v leisure battery to power an inverter than plugging in a transformer to convert it back to a low DC voltage. Useful if you had a power cut or wanted to use in a van or camping.

Great video and really enjoying the channel. I'm so conflicted with Starlink, it's a necessary service for sure but I'm grumpy because as a photographer the satellites really mess up astro photography haha! One thing I've noticed in your vids, across the different channels is probably a better need for audio, check out the dji microphone kit, you get 2 wireless mics so you each can be hooked up nice and clear and don't need to worry so much about wind 🙂

Starlink satellites are only visible during the extreme dawn and extreme dusk times when the sun's light still reflect off the satellite down to earth. They're invisible during the times that most people are trying to take pictures of the stars.

@GregSheard Yes, I just made a similar post about Starlink being a great benefit for ppl in remote areas, but how the light & eventual "space junk" pollution has caused significant problems for both professional & amatuer astronomers, photographers, researchers, etc. I also agree that the DJI mike kit would be great for the improvement of this channel, especially since it is in such a windy area. One of my neighbours has Starlink, just too far from the exchange for usable broadband, they have been happy with it… I’m lucky to be nearer the exchange and get nearly 40meg download…. Not bad for a wee bothy in rural Aberdeenshire 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

It's so good that the Starlink worked for you. I have no mobile signal where I live in Devon, unless I hang out of my upstairs window, or walk up the lane! So at least I have a landline telephone, and the internet, but the speed is very slow as you can imagine! xxx

Look up jurassic fibre, they are presently supplying low latency symmetrical (up and down) 950mbps connections across much of Devon.

@@ZonkedCompanion Sadly, because of our isolated location, we can not get fibre here - it is in the village, however, which is only 1 mile away. My neighbour has paid a lot of money, to have a faster service, but I would not be able to afford to do this myself. Thank you for your message though. xxx

@@jillychandler ahh yes that's annoying, I have seen a few cases like that where one or two houses are missed as its not worth them digging up the road. There are options for microwave connections as an alternative but as you say they aren't generally cheap. If it were me and I was on friendly terms with my neighbour, I'd offer the neighbour to split the bill then run some cat6 between the houses with a firewall in the middle. Otherwise like you say you are stuck, and with BT due to phase out landlines in the coming years... 💩
