Few German performance cars are quite as hyped these days as the E30 generation BMW 3 Series, but with that hype comes not only the likely chance of prices spiralling upward for mostly nostalgic reasons, as can be seen with the vastly overinflated JDM market, but also the risk of these cars not living up to the hype when it comes to actually owning and driving them...
Naturally then I jumped at the chance to actually try one out, here in a lovely green 1989 shape 320i 4 door Saloon spec, with that smooth 2.0 litre straight 6 M20 engine and 5 speed manual gearbox. So all that remains then is to head out on the road to find out if this more practical, daily driver oriented variant of the E30 lineup can offer an insight into why people love them so much...let's review the BMW 320i and find out!

To be fair, there is a big difference between a 320i, and a 325i let alone an E30 M3, which is basically a race car for the road. Compared to other mid range brand family cars of the late 80's though, these E30's were fantastic quality, and mechanically very good indeed. I guess the styling is something subjective to the viewer, but personally I love them. Boxy and those quad headlights are just perfect. One thing I love about the interior, is the way the centre dash is angled towards the driver, something which is now lost since the E92 gen cars, and it's a shame because it made the interior very driver focussed.

I wish manufacturers would stick to naturally aspirated engines instead of going for the turbo torque shove. Without forced induction more displacement is used and we could have way more inline-5 and inline-6 engines with 2.5 and 3.0 liters that consume as much fuel as turbocharged engines but are much smoother.
