As a video and photo editor the M2 Mini with the 256gb SSD had almost similar performance to my desktop machine with a Ryzen 7 CPU and a dedicated Nvidia video card with an NVME drive. My windows desktop was only seconds faster and the M2 did not experience any thermal issues with a drop in CPU frequency. Also I do believe you got a bad M2 Mini. My M2 base model was consistently giving me 1500 MBS Write and Read speeds, almost double what you have here.

For future vids like this it'd be nice to monitor the core frequencies to see whether it's just the SSD's or the thermal throttling that's causing differences.

It would be interesting to have these new M2/M2 Pro machines compared against older, intel based MacBooks. I think most of us developers don't upgrade their machine that often so I think this can be interesting for a lot of us. I personally just upgraded from a 2017 15" MBP to a M2 Pro 16" 32GB Ram and I plan to keep that for as long as possible. The improvement to my development workflow is just mind blowing. I mostly do Web Development with a lot of micro services running in docker at the same time. The only downside is that I have no time drinking coffee anymore 😄

They will blow them out of the water, the older Apple devices using intel used older chips (generally 1 -2 gens old but sometimes up to 4), didn't provide decent thermal design (the last one had basically none), used a low/mid-tier gfx card and did not provide translation layers in hardware (x265, et. al.), they also used cheap ssds which were pretty slow and the ram was the bargain bin samsung chips found on the cheap corsair ram sticks, then due to the lack of thermal efficiency they basically lowered the voltage supplied to the cpu to counteract the heat (and noise of the case fan) So all over it will be a significant imrpovement. for code it depends on what you are compiling and running. Simple tasks like compiling JS framework stuff etc. should be pretty damn fast as that is 'easy' for cpus to do, full compilation to machine code may differ. Unsure about complex projects with multiple dependencies too (ignore this if you are just using semi-compiled scripting languages as that is only 1 step out of 3 for compilation), it will largely depend on the compiler you are using and how objects are linked to executable code.

Okay, so what’s happening with the air is that (ironically) it doesn’t have a fan, so the chip is getting warm and saying warm for longer. The Mac Mini with the slower ssd config is still able to keep the processor relatively chilly for more consistent run-to-run results.

In my experience, iops are way more important than bandwidth for large compilation runs with many small files. I had an external sabrent thunderbolt enclosure with a very fast (in terms of iops) m2 pcie ssd in it, but it only used 2 pcie lanes - it was still consistently faster for compilation jobs than the very high bandwidth 1TB ssd in my m1 MBA.
@ZhuJo99

Exactly. Especially doing a lot of small files. Which, ie node is doing A LOT. Those “benchmarks” of SSDs typically show performance of read/write huge files which is very untypical - maybe for someone who is transferring raw photos and videos to the Mac, but those are highly unlikely going to buy low end configuration, or, configuration with just 256 GB of SSD. Those configurations are aimed at light users, students, office work, home users who do browsing, accounting etc. I really hate those clickbait channels (like Max) where they assume that everybody must be doing hard video editing all day. Me, as a web developer (mainly react and php) I don’t give a shit to videos and photos.

The slow SSD speed only matter if you use swap memory. If you have enough ram, for whatever things that you are running. It will not show much difference on the other hand if you reach the ram limit, you will see major slowdown. If you get the base M2 Mini, you will definitely use up all 8 gb ram easily by opening 10 browser tabs + building a project and you will definitely see the problem.
@PaulHojda
@PaulHojda Жыл бұрын
It won't even matter for swap. Even the faster ssd is still orders of magnitude slower than RAM, så swap is going to be slow regardless. Besides, swap is mostly reading and writing lots of small files, where both SSD's are evenly matched. Only large sequential reads and writes are going to be different on the 256 SSD vs the larger capacities.
@super_hero2
@super_hero2 Жыл бұрын
@@PaulHojda Sure swap is slower than ram that is obvious. Saying that does not mean a machine with slow SSD will perform similarly to another with fast SSD in cases where ram is fully utilized. If you multi tasks a lot, or your programs multitask a lot, there is a good chance that the same data is being swap multiple times and that add up when you have SSD that is 2x slower than the other. I am not sure what heuristic MacOS use to manage ram but even when I minimize my 20 browser tabs, it still uses a ton of swap memory.

technically it should only be faster when the assets you want to access are on both of the modules. if a file exists on only of the modules of the m1, the it'll probably have the same performance as the singe module m2. the modules are apparently raw storage so the one module version should have the same number of controllers as the single module ones

Expected this. The slower SSD really doesn't matter that much (alltough it's annoying to have slower SSDs compared to the older Macs). If you compare a SATA SSD with a NVMe/PCIe SSD you won't notice a different either except in specific workflows. Storage speed is just not the bottleneck.

Sasha, in theory a slower internal SSD could affect performance in music production. Logic Pro by default saves it’s included sound library to the internal drive, and slower access times means less polyphony ( notes able to be played back at once) however it’s not wise to use a 256gb model for this anyway as it will fill up quickly and as we know the more read/writes to a drive the shorter it’s lifespan.
@ZhuJo99
@ZhuJo99 Жыл бұрын
And that’s the point - those clickbaits assume that 256 GB is slow because it’s slow at sustained huge file transfers which is something a target group of these models is likely never going to do anyway.

The ssd chips are the same speed, it's just less chips on one version, this creates a bandwidth bottleneck. I am assuming for the monorepo you killed an obj and bin files prior to running? Interesting how they swapped positions in that one test, I'm guessing it may be an issue in the compiler or maybe voltage reduction on one due to heat (cept I'd expect them to come closer together then)

8gb ram is not enough for comfortable work. I experienced problems with 16gb m1 air, the swap was about 10gb and everything was so slow. It was webstorm + rider + slack + 2 browsers and an external monitor. Jetbrains products are memory hungry and don't forget that every electron app consumes a lot of memory. Now I got air m2 with 24gb of RAM and 512 ssd for working on the go. I'm satisfied so far. Js project compiles even a little bit faster than my main m1 max 16 inch. The size is perfect. The only disadvantage is only 1 external monitor support. For the developers who don't need a laptop, I would recommend going with m2-512-24 or m2pro-1tb-32. Some of the ram will be used for the external monitor and 8gb is a disaster. If you repeat these tests with apps opened, devtools in browser and so on, I expect 8gb Mac mini to be very slow

At last, the understanding that more performance is directly correlated to better specs. If you favour speed, then buy more RAM and faster SSDs. If you multitask like a power user, then buy more RAM. The base model is not for prosumers that want stuff done quickly.

If you are a developer and work on relatively large projects, Air doesn't cut it just because of the lack of fans and thermal throttling. you run something once and find a bug change it and run time and again... it heats up and runs slow. But, most probably no one builds an entire monorepo multiple times. one works on one of the shared project within the monorepo at a time most of the time. So, Air should be enough. This reinforces the saying "To each his own".

When running large parallel builds the amount of required memory forces swapping to disk then that swapping obviously competes with file reading and writing from the compile process itself. If your mini has for instance eight gigs and your MacBook Air has for instance 24 gigs and you end up swapping on the mini but not the air then the significant difference could be due to the swapping and not necessary The difference in bandwidth of the two processes

@@andyH_England True but if you’re benchmarking you should either make the machine memories the same or explicitly say that you’re not making them the same because of some other reason for instance your benchmarking equal cost computers or the base in this model versus the base and that model. What would be much more interesting would be to understand how a 24 gig MacBook Eyre M2 compares to a 24 gig Mac mini. Is there something inherent in the air or mini configuration such as the SSD that hobbles one or the other?
@andyH_England

@@christopherbowman7743 I don't disagree. As you say, as a statistician at heart, I would make everything equal apart from one variable or two in certain comparisons. That is why I was against Max Tech tests, as he never did a 16GB/256GB versus 8GB/512 GB. It was obvious why he never did that test, as it would rage against his agenda that the slower SSD was the mitigating factor. When, of course, it was too little RAM for the job at hand.

Did I hear you correctly that the MacBook Air 1TB also has 24GB RAM and the M2 Mini has a 256G SSD and is the base config - e.g. only 8GB RAM? Does the RAM difference come into play here, especially as it relates to memory pressure / SSD swap? BTW, I appreciate your reviews on these devices for software developers, instead of only video production. So many KZfaq video users are using their devices just to create more videos. While this is interesting, this is not what most users use their Mac’s for. Do you ever use your Macs with Parallels and Windows 11 to test your software projects on the Windows side? If so, what configuration have you found works best for you for that type of work? I am a electrical and computer engineer and do software development and simulations. I use a M2 MacBook Air with 512GB (and 8GB RAM) and it seems to work well when I need to use development or engineering tools only available for WIndows, if I’m only running Parallels / Windows 11 and not much else on my Mac. Since the M2 Mini is such a great value, I’m wondering which configuration of an M2 Mini might provide the price / performance value for the same kind of work, when I only need to be at my desktop.

It is unlikely to use swap memory for such workflow. The RAM still might make a difference as the OS use file cache: the larger the RAM, the more and the longer files can be kept in the cache. That would benefit workflow where the same (large) number of files are reused. By the way, OS files caching is also a reason why the SSD speed does not matter as much as many reviewer want you to believe.

I just ripped 64 GB of RAM out of my 2020 iMac because it kept shutting down when it was at maximum RAM. Hopefully, it stops doing it. If it is no better then there must be another cause, like fluff inside the machine causing it to shut down to save the CPU when it gets hot. In that situation it needs prising apart by an expert. More hassle, and it could break it, but the upside is that if that was the cause I could reinstall the RAM and restore it to 128 GB. I will have to see how it goes.

Now they have wowed everyone, they need to realign their model lineup, so that the more money you spend, the more speed and performance you get. Judging the follow-up from a brand new architecture to version 2 is unfair and unjust. The M2 marks the start of the focused model lineup, and everything will flow from that, not the M1.

@@andyH_England Are you suggesting they lost money on the Mac Book Pro's, because they wanted to impress? Let me answer that for you :). The M1 caused a 25% increase in first-quarter earnings, driving an 11 billion dollar quarter, which was a record quarter for Apple. They can put two 256 chips into their premium product (like they did in there record quarter earnings the first time). It's a pretty indefensible position, to defend Apple for this. I don't hate Apple, I own their products, and will purchase more. But regardless of that, this is still a dick move.

Anyone who's watched actual technical reviews of the M2 Macs knows Apple changed from two, smaller capacity storage (NAND) chips to one. The chip speed is roughly the same but having multiple storage chips allows Apple's architecture to use a form of RAID 0, which effectively doubles the apparent storage speed. The way to get the "lost" speed back is simply to buy an M2 Mac with more storage. Apple continues to tease consumers with low prices but just like on all previous Macs, you never buy the entry storage level. Just like on iPhones. Since internal storage can't be increased after purchase, consumers need to spend the extra money to get a Mac that will serve them for several years, spreading out the upgrade cost.

The m2 Mac mini is so affordable, and is even comparable to the m1 Mac book air and Mac book pro. This shows that because the processor is this fast, the ssd speed does not matter much. No one will actually care, as the Mac mini has fan and can work faster for longer time, the better thermal even sometimes beat the 2000 Mac book pro. 500 vs 2000 dollars. Mac mini is really good.

That M2 base model is a value king. $499 with an educational discount. It will take a lot bad performance to overcome that much great value.

Let’s install all the necessary libraries and documentation to your Mac m2 base ohh, m2 takes 4 times as long as on my M1 Pro. This relies not all on cpu or GPU aside from a little copy /write management. Let’s copy my email mailbox folder. Hmmm once again m2 base four times as slow as my m1 mini. Ok my mailbox is only 32GB in size so chances are I overran the SSD cache on both.

I thought it was going to be one of those roasting the mac mini like Max tech does lol. So in conclusion the slower SSD is not a big deal and the mac mini even runs faster in some situations.

I mean, only gamers care about txfr speeds because they want to load their games/levels 10s faster 😂 If you are compiling code, the machine spends most of the time compiling, not transferring files And 256gb ssd shouldn’t be use for development. Just loading up various programs and packages takes up gigs and gigs of storage. You really need a minimum of 512gb and if you want to cheap out, get an external ssd to store compile outputs etc …
