This is a semi-review of the Sigma fp. One of the most interesting and perplexing cameras to come out in years. I say semi-review as compared to my usual reviews this is pretty short and I don't go into everything that it does. This is much more focused on the pros and cons of the camera. Make sure you watch till the end as the final edit of the cinema DNG footage is utterly gorgeous. This camera is capable of one hell of a great image!

Edit: the “off” profile now has the sharpness removed since firmware 3.0. It has been like this for a while and I think the negative reviews of the fp now are sort of outweighed by the brilliant software support the fp has, not to mention ssd drives are now a third of the price of when this video was made, so that’s basically a compression feature - I’m doing an 8hr shoot in fhd 12 bit and the data rate doesn’t go over 700bmps!! So uncompressed cinedng if you’re sticking to 1080p is now easy - note that with latest firmware, ssd can only go up to 2TB, but for £150 now, you get a 2TB ssd. My custom housed £150 Samsung 980pro laughs at a £600 2TB cf express card. Sony doesn’t have anywhere near the same level of support - otherwise I would’ve gone for a zv-e1 but that thing is purposely crippled to overheat and you know there’s not going to be any updates because the a7s 3 didn’t get any Thank you for pointing out the baked in sharpness in the “off” mov mode. That is a an absolute stomach clencher that the iPhone 14 is also doing the same thing 🤮. There I was excited to finally match my zeiss biogon lens and there they bake in all that sharpness so that it will be absolutely pointless or should I say sooty? 😅. WTF Edit: firmware 3.0 fixes this.

Thanks. Good summary. I have one and I love the images out of it. Either raw or mpeg. Having said that I just sent sigma an email literally seconds before I saw your video (funny that) asking sigma to introduce a compressed raw, so I echo your call. Also would like to find a easier way to listen to sound whilst recording. That’s a pain. However I find the internal mics are some of the best I have ever come across but outside the wind makes it very hit and miss. Inside or in calm conditions the internal mics are really surprising. Also agree on AF but I just go manual and forget about but it would be good to have better face detection. Overall I really like the camera and it’s versatility. Good on gibs too. Keep the pressure on Sigma, I believe they will respond either wise they are wasting their time, imo. Thanks.

I find that SlimRAW is excellent for saving space in post with the DNG files. I shoot 12-bit and always offload as 10-bit log with SlimRAW. This produces lossless compressed files that are usually less than 1/3 of the original size and it is blazing fast, it takes the same time as straight copy from the SSD. And I know others compress to 5:1 lossy or even smaller on offload, which lowers footprint further. Due to the RED patent issues I am fairly certain we are not getting compressed DNG in the future, but an improvement Sigma can easily make is to provide 10-bit uncompressed log footage instead or in addition to the 12-bit linear. This will shave 1/6 of the SSD storage space without any noticeable quality loss. I recall both Canon and Panasonic do this with their raw capable cameras.

I tried this camera a few times lately. It has a gorgeous image, particularly in RAW when you assign the BM colourspace to the clips in Davinci, you can get a lot of dynamic range. One thing I noticed was that it had better (less) rolling shutter than most mirrorless counterparts. Sigma really should make a bigger version of this camera, I don't see why they want to make it so small, not exactly clever when you end up rigging it. Nice video as always Phil.
@rockrl98
@rockrl98 3 жыл бұрын
RAW is/was the future but it was hijacked by RED. If they were to replace SD's with m.2 slots in next gen, we could continue with uncompressed for a bit, but it's kinda painful, and the availability other compressed raw codecs to transcode to on pc is also sad. BM colourspace does fuckall for DR, stills cameras have great DR and none shoot log or any of these fancy video standards, any idiot can pull down the contrast slider, raw is raw. Rolling shutter is apparently better because of line skipping, the FP apparently does not down-sample, or at least not in the traditional way of doing it after the de-bayer, but I doubt it's complete skipping, since noise ain't that bad, but then again, why would cropping and dropping resolution decrease the rolling shutter, it's a bit confusing. I strongly disagree with the bigger, if anything it can be made even smaller, like the NEX 5 or something, it could be even a bit thinner, and then the grip should be made ~as deep as the shortest lens they make for it, (The 45mm is still way big, but then again, the lenscap lenses like those from MS Optics are a bit too extreme, something like the samyang 35mm 2.8, I'd say) could give a nice boost to the battery capacity. LCD could be made to be 16:9 and that would give space for EVF in top left, next to that could be an AUX display, to show stuff, since if main screen was 16:9, you wouldn't want shit cluttered over it.

@@rockrl98 can I ask you if you used the FP? You were happy with all those small buttons closer together and the camera itself so small that you can barely hold it in your hand? You think it should be even smaller? Crikey... when you import the raw files into Davinci you can chose to give it the BM settings on the clip and select preserve highlights. That way you have a nicer starting point. But hey, raw is raw.
@rockrl98
@rockrl98 3 жыл бұрын
@@HuFilms Nicer is subjective, I think more people are familiar with editing photos, so then it's easier to just edit with default settings (maybe even objectively, log curves were designed to encode wider DR into fewer bits, which is accusation process, that just complicates editing.(or use it if you like BM CS so much .-.)), by "preserve", I assume you meant "recover", and yeah HL recovery is great, but it depends on the scene, and the one in DR is rather mediocre... Handling on the FP leaves a lot to be desired, and as for size, I'd be happy even with a QX1-ish type body, just add a tilting back LCD with touch for checking focus, zebras and peaking, add another ring on it for ISO control, RES FR and other settings can be in a simple menu, and if you're shooting raw, that's all you really need.

I had that camera for a week to test it for photography. I love the imagequality but i wish it would be about 40 MP not 24. What i missed was a EVF, a tilt display and a bigger grip with a bigger battery. Although it do not eat batteries like my Merrills, it would be good to have a bigger one in a needed grip. I did not like the attachable Viefinder. It turns the camera into a telescope and does not help shooting at low positions or over head in a crowd… I do not care about the not perfect AF. I would not need it for my kind of photography. There is a rumored FP-L. I hope it has the wanted features plus an IBIS and a mechanical shutter to avoid banding at flourescend light.

I currently use a BMPCC 4k, which is great and I don't want to compromise on the 12bit RAW. But even the slow autofocus of Sigma FP is surely better than the 4k that doesn't have continuous autofocus at all. Add in the smaller size, larger sensor, and the amazing warm colours the fp seems to chuck out and I'm feeling pretty tempted to add the fp to my arsenal. Does anyone have any views. Many seem to think the 4k makes the fp redundant, but is there a merit to having both?

my needs for sigma FP in future firmware update or 2nd generation : ① 3:1 or 5:1 dng raw to SSD or whatever ② 4K 60 fps raw(at least 10 bit please ), even in Crop mode S35 is nice ③ allow raw video with electronic stabilization ④ More control on focus peaking ( current tiny screen without big output monitor can not show the peaking accurately). by saying that , Sigma FP it''s still my most favorite run and gun gear to take out and shoot.

Think old Hasselblad top look down, Put elbows close/into body and you suddenly are locked with upper body. Hand on grip (master hand), other hand under camera soft tension against body. The new way to use the new cameras with Screen as EVF. Any one else has a way to "lock in camera"?

For a photographer I always thought the FP should go 'boutique' on this and give us a full-frame Pentax Q. Video specs that match Philip's requests, small EVF accessory, on body hot shoe for flash, and contacts for proprietary lenses with built-in leaf shutter. It's a pity flange distance does not provide too much hope of a lens adapter with aperture ring / leaf shutter built-in for any lens make, esp, Leica M. I'd pay £600 for the latter accessory to avoid red dot snobbery and the masking of such with black tape.

I would really appreciate a video by a top class, like Phillip Bloom, to shot some kind of an ultimate video on best cameras that are not dealing well with autofocus. What are benefits of using these. And a gear for those. There are tons of people that don't know a thing about manual focusing, manual focus lens, advantages in price and control of frame that comes with manual focus. Because all they do, is watching vloggers talking about cameras. And a vlogger starts any camera review with autofocus...and then throws out a 7000$ g-master autofocus lens, and is still incapable of using it the way it should be used. The point of the video for all the boys and girls that like filming anything to be: -teach us basics of manual (many people don't now does manual focus works based on left/right position, or based on distance); -encourage people to at least try using manual; -explanation, that people don't need a full frame if they don't have a money for one; -a person with non full frame camera is not retarded or defected in any way. A bunch of motion pictures are recorded with super 35mm, that vloggers are calling "croped lens", and people that are doing this for a long time, like Mr.Bloom, are calling it super 35 or APS-c. That is the difference between a master and a vlogger yelling WHAT'S UUUUP at the start of every video. Unfortunately, many talented people with cameras, think that Philip Bloom is same what Peter McAnything is. -what are we getting in price and image quality by taking lenses without manual focus and what are a good options to combine with cameras such as Blackmagic4k/6k, Fuji x-t3/4, Panasonic GH5; - few words on cameras that are dealing with poor autofocus, and what they are giving us as a compensation; ... Don't want this channel to become a start up guide for someone that will use camera for a week and throw it away when it gets bored. But, I just think that words that come out out of someone that has been on SKY and dedicated a life to this craft, and went to every corner of the planet with a camera, would have a greater impact on talented people.

And minor things include (would be nice): bigger battery, IBIS, grip option with battery upgrade (I should add the battery grip attachment could be the same size as the small grip. Philip, I have to disagree with you on this one. I just bought the camera and I love it. It does have a future, in my hands. Amazing 4k/2k 12bit 444 RAW cDNG. Low light similar to Sony a7s3 (but better colour science at night). Colour science is beautiful similar to Fuji XT3. And price, wow, half of Sony a7s3. If you are an inspired cinematographer this is the camera for you. I was able to fit my Nikon and Sony A-mount lenses to my Sigma FP using a special adaptors (less $50 each): Imagine Sony Zeiss 135mm F1.8 A-mount lens on Sigma FP, gorgeously beautiful creamy bokeh beyond imagination. I was able to get cheap SSD (less than $100) to work with it. AND I was able get unlimited external power source to attached to it via a dummy battery (less than $40). It has a director's view for Arri and RED cameras. What more do you want for a pocket-sized cinema camera with less than $2k price tag? If this is not the camera, then I don't think there will be a cinema camera at this price point in any foreseeable future, Philip.

@philipbloom 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t get your reply. I was very positive about a lot of the camera but pointed out that I am 100% certain they will fix in a mk ii. You talk about it being a pocket camera but you are adding all that stuff onto it! Is it really a “pocket camera” and does being a “pocket camera” really matter. You clearly aren’t using it out the box where it is small. So that point makes no sense. It needs an EVF. It needs a tilting screen. Great it records to huge cdng. Quality is great. File sizes are horrendous. So you don’t agree with me that the internal recording isn’t good enough? How is that even possible to disagree with? It’s not. Great you have wonderful manual focus with 3rd party lenses. How is that any different to other mirrorless cameras? £2000 isn’t that cheap. If you look at the new Blackmagic pocket cinema 6K pro that is a superior camera for £500 more. The sigma sits in an awkward spot. It’s small but you can’t really use it like that so you need to build it up but being a small base makes it harder. Anyway I said it all in the video. Don’t be defensive about the camera. It’s my opinion and this is based on everything that’s out there. This is a first generation model and it shows what needs to be done. sigma’s CEO messaged me to thank me for the detailed feedback as it was very useful for them. You can work round some of it limitations but wouldn’t it be better if you didn’t have to?
@educatetube
@educatetube 3 жыл бұрын
@@philipbloom Philip, thanks for your opinion but you need to respect mine as well. Remember, this is a full frame pocket cinema. Firmware is now at 2.03. Sigma and fujifilm are known to continue to improve their same camera overtime. That is very responsible and honorable thing. This is what customers' need. That is being respectable and loyal to their customer; the ancient Japanese's way. I don't see that in Sony and I own several of them (a7r3, a6100 and fs700r). Sony has lost their Japanese traditional values; they have not earn my respect (except for their fs700r which they did honour and follow through). When Japanese CEO emailed you, it is out of respect. It is something honourable men do even when they disagree with you. This characteristic so rare now a day. Sorry, for side tracking... For less than $2000 usd, Sigma FP is an amazing full-frame camera. Yes, evf would be nice, but Sony FX3 didn't have it. The weird thing is the camera that you are not happy with, I seem to love it: Sony fs700r and Sigma FP. I guess we think differently and use the camera differently. I really appreciate your honest feedback but we have different view point and needs. Keep up with your channel, with great respect, Sip.
