Sigma deserves respect for knowing that they would get a bad review and still encouraging it to be published. You don't see that from companies. It seems like they are really dedicated to receiving feedback and using it to create a better product. Their lenses are fantastic, and although they might be in the baby stages of camera production, with a dedication to receiving feedback, in a few years we might be talking about sigma cameras in the same light as we do sigma lenses.

THIS camera would be the perfect topic for a boardroom-meeting with Gerald and Camera Conspiracies 😁.

It says a lot about Sigma that they're OK with critical reviews and just want people to share the truth. That kind of integrity is to be admired. I'll continue to buy their products...not this camera, but their lenses are excellent.

Objectively, I hear your concerns when comparing specs and workflow. And your insight that this camera is optimally used for CDNG capture to SSD is very helpful. But if you want a minimalist camera that takes beautiful images, with the smallest possible form factor, combined with modularity to rig it out when you need that, then this is it... so I don't think we should knock a screwdriver for being a bad hammer. Sigma's business success has not been founded on building a whole camera brand eco-system, but rather on fitting its products into wider eco-systems and focusing on how Sigma can add innovation or offer value. COULD Sigma make a camera just like a Sony or Fujifilm? I would think they can, but why would they do that? This camera cleverly sneaks into a sweet spot for certain use cases and personal preferences. BTW, I don't work for them nor do I know anyone who does... I just appreciate what they do, respect their integrity and values (as you acknowledged) and I own three of their lovely lenses. So there are two possibilities, it seems to me. One: you are right, and Sigma made a strategic mistake building the wrong camera with ther wrong specs. Two: your critique will be 'undone' by the simple fact that Sigma have found a niche that they can uniquely fill... it's no coincidence in my view that Sony launched the FX3, a camera which also 'objectively' does nothing better than other Sony cameras... other than its form factor. Moreover, I think you could argue that Sigma are being smart: the fp series is a smaller alternative to the 'box camera' form factor that is doing well at the moment, and the fp also take stills but has no recording time limit. With that EVF, there is nothing like it on the market. The footage I've seen so far from the camera looks stunning, and they seem to be aiming the camera at users who want great colour straight out of the camera rather than spending a lot of time in post. I'll be waiting to see how the firmware upgrades improve things, but I remain interested in this camera for a CDNG workflow (with SSD) and baked-in looks in non-raw format, recorded in-camera. CineD have an article up on the Sigma fp L that's also an interesting read: they asked the product manager for the fp series, Wakamatsu-san, about the optimal settings for this camera. As you found, this is a bit complicated... but the simple insight is that this camera's performance is tied to the crop factor that you use. To quote: "For now, please see below the recommended crop factor for EACH scenario: - for the best resolution: x1.3 to x2.48 - for phase detection AF: x1.0 to x1.53 - for best dynamic range: x1.24" Which of course begs another question: is this REALLY a full-frame camera, or a defacto APS-H/C camera? Now I'm starting to feel a little 'undone'... You've got to feel sympathy for the camera manufacturers' marketing and engineering teams these days. How on earth do you market a camera when every camera is SO capable? In some of the rumours about the fp L they were saying this might be an APS-C sensor... which it kind of IS... but everyone seems to want to buy a FF camera at the moment... I suspect the success of this camera will be ultimately based on how well Sigma (and influencers like you) manage to explain to the marketplace the "who and what this camera is for." I'm really keen to learn more about how Sigma is using that sensor: I read somewhere they have used this sensor to re-create the look from a Foveon sensor... it'll be interesting to see some comparisons of this camera's footage with the original fp and with other cameras. And to hear more about people's experience with the workflow in post...

Hello, I am French and have a Sigma FP, so I was interested in the test, thank you! It is true that the price is undoubtedly too high. However, I allow myself to bring another vision to the product. For my part I had bought the fp for its small size and light weight while having the possibilities of a full frame. I am not disappointed, I can take it often with me without it being in the way and the rendering of the images is very satisfactory, but I only do photos. So the fact that there are 61 million pixels and some improvements over fp will still make me think!

I really like Sigma for doing something different. And after watching Steve Huff's review and seeing his samples I am really impressed with the colors and skin tones from the stills. As a still camera for working a bit slower I think this would be amazing, just the size with the new lenses makes it an incredible tool that you easily would bring on every walk.

This camera is not confusing at all for me. I need a tiny hi res camera for hiking and landscapes. This is the perfect camera. Let me also add that Sigma has a different processor than Sony and the colours are vastly nicer than the R4 IMO.

It was disappointing that its price point prevented a review of its photo capabilities. Gerald, you usually do very good full reviews, and I was surprised that you glossed over the photo aspects of this camera in about 30 seconds. After watching the video I have no idea how it performs as a photo camera, just that I could buy something else for a similar price. My understanding was that Sigma focused on video with the first FP and this one was supposed to be focused more on stills photography. What about when the price drops? This review leaves me in the dark. For my shooting, mostly landscapes and architecture, this is a very enticing camera, as long as they also make some lightweight high quality zoom lenses to go with it (otherwise it's a bit pointless to put a huge lens on it). A "flippy screen" (shout out to Casey at Camera Conspiracies) would have been nice though for low angle shooting.

Really appreciate this Gerald - you’ve got straight to the point. Got to say I love the design language, and part of me wants to buy it as an ultra-minimal travel camera... kind of with classic Hasselblad 50n series resolution and (in)convenience. Just missing a couple of features (fold-up screen and WiFi) to make that dream a reality.

Brilliant review as always Gerald! Absolutely agree a 10 bit internal log could save it, but as it stands it's just not a camera that makes any sense. 3 years ago if you'd told me the specs I might have thought "holy moly 12-bit cDNG 4K output on a camera that size?!" but it just doesn't even come close to the cheaper competition out there today.

Finally, all day I've been looking for one of my trusted sources to do a review of this, and go into these kinds of details. No one talked about the lack of log or how to deal with it or if line skipping occurred and how bad it was. This has raised more questions though. Like If you were able to get almost 13 stops of dynamic range out of this using Braw and a, "proper locker" then is it possible to get a similar dynamic range out of the original Sigma fp using braw and the same technique? I ask because no one has done a thorough test of the original since it got it's braw upgrade, and if it could produce a less line skipped image it might be a better option at around $1700. As a side note the original also is compatible with the new viewfinder which is sold separately, which would offer a $2400 full frame 4k super sampled CinemaDNG 10ish-13ish stop camera with an EVF, and while the raw footage would chew through hard drives it could be SlimRAWed after capture giving one 4k CinemaDNG sequences with up to 12:1 compression. The only big question is can one obtain closer to the 13 stop mark some how. This is also making me think Sigma could come out with a "fp C" that is a 10-12 megapixel non line skipped full frame fp style camera that wouldn't have to line skip for the external recorders. With all these features and a true log mode for say $1000-$1500 they would be walking in original BM pocket cinema cameras footsteps, and I guarantee despite recording uncompressed CinemaDNG sequences internally, it would sell like hotcakes.

I love that Sigma is trying to do new things in the L mount space. This camera might not do what they want, but hopefully they learn from it and bring out an improved model. Sigma lens quality suggests that they are capable of getting it right with time. I am slowly talking myself into an S1H after earlier resistance, and am liking the strengths that the mount is showing, and the commitment of the three partners to making it work long term.

Kudos to Sigma for being honest about their products. Not many companies are that transparent. A real breath of fresh air. I've been using their lenses since the mid-1980s when their lenses were mediocre at best, but now, is probably one of my first go to Third Party lens provider.

Proud owner of the original FP here, and as soon as I saw the 61MP I knew that this would be a confusing camera. Part of me is glad to not be tempted though, I'm having a blast with the OG version. I pair it with my BMPCC4K and it can really punch above its weight class once you understand how it handles. I will say that with the original FP, a lot of similar reviews were made before the first firmware, which totally changed the trajectory of that camera. Perhaps Sigma is eyeing 8K capture or something with a future patch. Thanks for this review as always Gerald!

I think this video speaks volumes for Gerald as a creator/reviewer/camera pro. The reviews are always very high detailed, but this was beyond belief. Maybe it's because I go in, knowing I'd never buy this camera or maybe it's because he isn't recommending it, but I just feel this video was levels above any other review I have seen on any other product in a LONG time!

They had a excellent sensor called Foveon used the Sigma DP1 to DP3 cameras and they are the sharpest images I have seen in any camera. instead of advancing that technology which has a layered image sensor for each primary colour they have dumbed down to a typical Bayer sensor that you find in almost all other cameras.
